Nano Pro MT™ Technology Summary

Enhancing the heat transfer coefficient of a fluid is beneficial in almost all thermal systems where heat needs to be rejected.
The heat transfer coefficient for a typical fluid system depends on numerous physical quantities related to the fluid and the
geometry of the system through which the fluid is flowing. Under conditions of constant heat capacity and density, the heat
transfer coefficient increases with the thermal conductivity of the working fluid and decreases with viscosity. Therefore, in
order to provide a net positive effect on the heat transfer coefficient, the contribution from enhanced thermal conductivity
must outweigh the detrimental effects resulting from increased viscosity. Working with a variety of heat transfer and
lubricating fluids, we’ve demonstrated that Nanofluids allow for significant increases in thermal conductivity with minimal
changes in viscosity.

The addition of high thermal conductivity particles to a fluid increases the fluid’s effective thermal conductivity. However,
micron-size or larger solid particles can prove problematic as they either precipitate out or lead to excessive wear of
components in the heat transfer system. On the other hand, engineered nanoscale particles behave differently than coarser
particles: they can be dispersed well in fluids of different types (e.g., oil, water, grease). More importantly, interfacial effects
at the nanoscale, between the solid particles and the fluid, lead to beneficial thermal properties. The Nanofluids are
produced by a proprietary technology where functionalized nanostructured particles are produced in the fluid of choice,
forming a concentrate that can be diluted as required. It is through this proprietary technology where nanoscale additives
remove the hazards of agglomeration found in past technologies micron-sized particle fluids.

As a consequence of “pulling” heat away from the source, Nanofluids present several benefits. For example, an
enhancement in the heat transfer properties of gear oil can reduce thermal degradation of the oil and erosion of the gears
due to heat, hence reducing downtime and maintenance costs by allowing for extended operation. Conventional oils will
suffer rapid degradation when exposed to high temperatures for extended periods of time; conditions frequently found in
differential gearboxes and especially typical of military vehicles and equipment which is operated in severe environments
and under extreme operating conditions. Lubricants containing engineered nanostructured particles can enhance both
thermal and tribological properties, while overcoming issues commonly associated with dispersed nanomaterials, such as
the deterioration of other critical performance criteria.
Nano Pro MT™ What is Nano Technology

• ‘Nano” – One billionth of a meter (10˄-9)

• The first concept was presented in 1959 by Dr. Richard
Feynman.
• The term ‘Nanotechnology’ was coined by Noril Taniguchi in
1974
• Nanotechnology is the art and science of manipulating
matter at the Nanoscale to create new and unique materials
and products with enormous potential. (i.e. Nano Pro MT™)

• La nanotecnología es el arte y la ciencia de manipular la

materia a escala Nano para crear materiales y productos
nuevos y únicos con un enorme potencial. (es decir, Nano
Pro MT ™)
Nano Pro MT™ What are Nanomaterials?

• Nanomaterials are defined as materials with at least

one external dimension in the size range of
approximately 1-100 nanometers.
• Naturally Occurring – Physically and chemically
heterogeneous and often termed ultrafine particles.
• Engineered – Designed with very specific properties
related to shape, size, surface properties and
chemistry.
• Nanomaterials are not equal to Chemicals
Nanotechnology classifications of Nanomaterials

• Nanomaterials can be classified generally into two classes:

Natural and artificially fabricated

• Natural nanomaterials: materials having biological systems; eg:

viruses(capsid), substances in our bone matrix, etc.
• Artificial nanomaterials: These are the ones that are fabricated by
different experiments. They can further sub-divided into 4 classes:
• Carbon Based: These nanomaterials are composed mostly of carbon,
most commonly taking the form of a hollow spheres, ellipsoids, or
tubes. Spherical and ellipsoidal carbon nanomaterials are referred to
as fullerenes, while cylindrical ones are called nanotubes(carbon
nanotubes (CNTs)).
• Metal Based: These nanomaterials include quantum dots, nanogold,
nanosilver and metal oxides, such as titanium dioxide.
• Dendrimers: These nanomaterials are nanosized polymers built from
branched units. The surface of a dendrimer has numerous chain ends,
which can be tailored to perform specific chemical functions. This
property could also be useful for catalysis. Also, because three-
dimensional dendrimers contain interior cavities into which other
molecules could be placed, they may be useful for drug delivery.
• Composites: Composites combine nanoparticles with other
nanoparticles or with larger, bulk-type materials. The composites may
be any combination of metal based, carbon based or polymer based
nanomaterials with any form of metal, ceramic, or polymer bulk
materials.

Why your oil’s temperature matters?

Arrhenius Rate Rule

Lubricants once they've exceeded their base
activation temperature, will degrade (oxidize)
twice as fast for every 10°C (18°F) increase in
temperature.
Why your oil’s temperature matters?
Problems associated with too much heat can include:

• Accelerates additive and base oil decomposition (Arrhenius)..

• VI (Viscosity Improvers) shear down more rapidly.

• During use, the VI improvers can sheer down and break apart, causing the viscosity of the oil to

decrease. Remember, exposure to high heat is the biggest factor in causing the sheer of the viscosity-

index improver.

• Heat collapses oil films, causing accelerated abrasion and scuffing conditions.

• Hot oil shortens the life of filters and seals and accelerates corrosion.

• Both oil and grease are more prone to leakage as they become less viscous

• Grease separates faster (oil from thickener) at elevated temperatures.

• High surface temperatures can form carbonaceous gum and resins. (Varnish) (
Lubricant Failure = Bearing Failure

When bearings fail, only a small number of failures are caused by material fatigue.
Most failures are caused by a condition that usually can be prevented.
Typically, the causes of bearing failure can be traced to:
• Harsh operating conditions
• Faulty storage, handling and installation
• Poor lubrication
Avoiding Lubricant Failures; Bearings fail for many reasons, but improper lubrication is at
the top of the list, according to a variety of studies:
• Improper lubrication: 40% to 50%
• Improper mounting: 25% to 30%
• Other causes: approximately 20 %
• Reaching the natural fatigue limit: LESS THAN 10% of bearings fail due to age
Common Heat and Lubrication Related Component Failures

Temperature and Lubricant Issues

In 2009 the U.S. Army concluded that thermal transients observed in
studies indicate the high possibility of thermal conditions within the AH-64
gearboxes, which exceed the operational limits of the lubricant, and that
these events may occur without detection.
In 2011 Nano Pro MT™ was awarded it first CRADA to test is gear oil and
