I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of probability.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to formulate and solve practical problems involving probability of simple
events.
C. Learning Competencies At the end of the lesson, each learner should be able to:
1) Solve for the probability of independent events.
2) Appreciate the uses of finding the probability of independent events.

IV. PROCEDURES Facilitator’s Activity Learners’ Activity

A. Reviewing previous “Good morning/afternoon class.” “Good morning/afternoon ma’am.”
lesson or presenting the new
lesson “Say present once your name is called.”
The teacher will call each names for the attendance. “Present.”

“What did we do and discuss last meeting?” “We had an activity about the
difference of experimental probability
and theoretical probability.”
“Based on our activity yesterday, what is again the
difference between experimental probability and
theoretical probability?” “Experimental probability is the
probability we get based on the
experiment that we do. On the other
hand, theoretical probability is the ideal
probability that we commonly solve on
papers.”
“Very well said. I see that you really learned a lot
from our activity.”

B. Establishing a purpose “For this lesson, our objectives will be the following.
for the lesson Kindly read.” A student will read the objectives
pasted on the board.

C. Presenting “I have here two situations. Who will read the first
examples/instances of the situation?”
new lesson
1. Aiden pulls an ace from a deck of regular playing A student will read the first situation.
cards. He does not replace the card. What is
the probability of pulling out a second ace?

“And then the second one.”

2. There are 6 black pens and 8 blue pens in a jar. Another student will read the second

and then take another pen, what is the
probability that you will get 2 black pens?

“From this two situation, which do you think shows

an independent event?” “The second situation.”
“Why do you think so?” “Because the pen has put back in the jar
before the second event was carried
out.”
“That’s right, very good!”

D. Discussing new concepts “How do you define an independent event again?” “Two events are INDEPENDENT if the
and practicing new skills #1 outcome of the first event does not
affect the outcome of the second
event.”
“What do you think are the words commonly
associated to independent events?” “With replacement.”
“Putting back.”
“Yes, because when these words are evident on a
problem then we can already say that those are
independent events.”

E. Discussing new concepts “Let us answer this.”

and practicing new skills #2 There are 6 black pens and 8 blue pens in a jar.
If you take a pen without looking, put it back and
then take another pen, what is the probability that
you will get 2 black pens?

“So what rule of probability are we going to use to

solve this problem? Is it complement rule,
multiplication rule or addition rule?” “Multiplication rule.”

“What multiplication rule? The general

multiplication rule or special multiplication rule?” “Special multiplication rule.”
“Why?” “Because special multiplication rule is
used for independent events.”
“What is again the formula for special multiplication
rule?” P(A and B) = P(A ꓵ B) = P(A) • P(B)
“Yes, we will just simply multiply the probability of
the first event and the second event.”

“First, we will find the probability of the first event.

What is the first event in the problem?” “Getting a black pen.”

“What will be the probability of getting a black pen.” P(black) =

“That’s right. What is the second event?” “Getting a black pen again.”
“So the probability will be just the same, right?” “Yes, ma’am”
“Then we will multiply, what will be the result?”
P(black and black) =

“Correct.”

F. Developing mastery “I want you to answer the following problems in The students’ will answer the problems
(Leads to Formative your notebooks.” individually and quietly.
Assessment 3)
1. If P(green) = 0.52 and P(blue) = 0.38, what is
the probability of getting green and blue?
2. What is the probability that Valerie will roll an
even number on the first die and a number 2
on the second die?
3. There are 8 blue chips, 3 green chips and 14
red chips in a box. You pick a chip and pick
another one after you replaced your first pick.
What is the probability that you will get blue
and red chips?
“Okay, who wants to answer the following

application of concepts and
skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations “Did you learn something from our activities and
and abstractions about the discussion today?” “Yes, ma’am.”
lesson “Do you still have any questions or clarifications?” “None, ma’am.”

“How do we get the probability of independent

events?” “By simply multiplying the probability of
each event.”
“Excellent. I see that you are ready for our
evaluation.”

I. Evaluating Learning “Class, get one fourth sheet of paper and answer
the following.” Answers
1. A basket contains 8 violet marbles and 5 brown 1)
marbles. Two marbles are drawn with
replacement of the first pick from the basket.
What is the probability that both of the
marbles are violet?
2. Jonas draws two random cards from a deck of 2)
cards with replacement of the first draw. What
will be his probability of getting two queens?

J. Additional activities or “Class, copy your assignment.”

application or remediation The students will copy their assignment.
ASSIGNMENT Answers
1. The alphabet is put in a box. You pick a 1)
letter, replace it and pick another letter.
What is the probability that the letter you
picked is both consonant?
2. What will be the probability if the first 2)
letter you picked is a vowel and the second
letter is a consonant?
