MODULE 2
UNIT 1 – GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF RECREATION

Overview:
A review of current literature indicates that people who participate in sports club
and organized recreational activities enjoy better mental health, are more alert, and more
resilient against stresses of modern living. Participation in recreational groups and socially
supported physical activity is show to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Violent crime
also decreases significantly when participation in community activities increases.

Objectives:
 Demonstrate basic skills associated with team recreation games and tactics.
 Demonstrate the ability to perform several offensive and defensive strategies.
 Utilize and apply the knowledge of recreation games’ rules, terminology, and
scoring procedures.
 Improve personal fitness through participation in aerobic, muscular strength,
muscular endurance, and flexibility activities.
 Understand and correctly apply biomechanical and physiological principles related
to exercise and training.

Establishing objectives is very important. Objectives serve as guides in evaluating


progress as well as results. They give direction to any plan of action. Recreation has the
following general objectives:

1. ENJOYMENT - recreational pursuits should provide the individual with


opportunities for enjoyment during leisure. The average citizen seeks joyful experiences
after a day’s work to make his life balanced and satisfying.

2. INDIVIDUAL FULFILLMENT – the human being possesses certain potential


capacities for doing things. Most recreational activities help develop skills and interests in
various activities that enable the person to express himself fully in the way he is most able.
Skills in dancing, sports or creativity in the arts can greatly enhance self-realization and
confidence thus contributing to the fullness of living.

II. VALUES OF LEISURE AND RECREATION


There are many rewards which grow out of recreation beyond the invaluable gain of
achieving personal satisfaction. There are rewards which make life richer and happier. They
mean a lot in personality development. Here are some values derived from wholesome
recreation.

1. PHYSICAL HEALTH – a large art of recreation is physical in nature. All forms of


games, sports and dances fall into this category. Physical recreation undertaken with
common sense and good judgement is essential to physical fitness.

2. PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH – only leisure and recreation can recreate the


overworked individual. Mental stress which is the result of frustration, of poverty,
unemployment, overfatigue and pressure of environment can be overcome with
pleasant spare-time interest that relaxes the tired mind.

3. SOCIAL WELL-BEING – recreation gives happiness and satisfaction. A happy


person can easily adjust to his boss peers and subordinates. He understands and
practices modern group living.

4. EMOTIONAL STABILITY – the person who enjoys a balanced diet or work and
recreation find his life full and his existence meaningful and sprinkled with human
delights. The ability to respond realistically and happily to his environment are
enhanced through recreation.

5. BIG BUSINESS – Dan Corbin (1970) states that recreation improves the economic
status of man. It means business. He said that everyone is directly concerned

economically with leisure and recreation. People spend a consideration part of their
income on recreational pursuits.

In addition to the above-mentioned values, Dan Corbin believes that some man’s
basic needs like recognition, self-direction, group acceptance and creative impulses which
contribute to personality and life enrichment are met through pleasurable exposure.

III. PRINCIPLES OF RECREATION


A principle is a governing law or tenet. It serves as a guideline which points
direction rather that standard which represents a level to be achieved. A principle is a result
of experience and emerged as a fundamental truth.

The following are some principles of recreation:

1. Wholesome recreation is a basic need for all human beings and is essential to their well-
being.
2. Everyone should have the opportunity for satisfying and enriching use of his leisure.
3. A democratic society has a responsibility for helping to provide wholesome recreation
opportunities.
4. Recreational opportunities must provide for physical, intellectual and social involvement
of the individual.
5. Recreation is primarily the responsibility of the individual but is also the responsibility
of the family, the community and its social institutions and the government at all levels.
6. Recreation has a claim on and a justification for both the tax income and the
philanthropic contribution in competition with other vital community.
7. Opportunities for recreation should be available throughout the year.
8. Recreation should meet the needs interests and capabilities of people of all levels.

A. SPECTATOR AND PARTICIPANT TYPE

 SPECTATOR TYPE - People spend their time watching the event and derive
enjoyment from it.

 PARTICIPANT TYPE - People do not gain enjoyment merely by watching; they do


so by joining the activity.

B. ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TYPE OF RECREATION

 ACTIVE TYPE – people have to function effectively in performing the action.

 PASSIVE TYPE – People have no excessive movement in performing the task or


action.

C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL

 PHYSICAL ACTIVITY – people exert efforts and bodily functions in performing the
action.

 MENTAL ACTIVITY – the mind is doing the functions with less body movement.

D. PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND COMMERCIAL

 PUBLIC TYPE – involves the general public


 PRIVATE TYPE – confined to people working in a private company
 COMMERCIAL TYPE – endorsing products which are open to everybody

SUMMARY
Physical Education in schools involves the study of theory regarding health and
fitness. Physical participation in a range of sports is also conducted as part of a physical
education curriculum. Team sports played and taught include basketball, volleyball, football
and soccer. Individual sports commonly taught are tennis and a range of track and field
activities. Fun recreational games can be a way to vary your physical education curriculum
and teach motor skills.
