1. Find the rate v with which helium flows out of a thermally insulated vessel into vacuum through a
small hole. The flow rate of the gas inside the vessel is assumed to be negligible under these
conditions. The temperature of helium in the vessel is T=1000 K.

2. Four large plane parallel plates A,B,C and D are placed parallel to each other from left to right. The
leftmost plate A and rightmost plate D are maintained at 2T0 and T0 respectively. All plates behave

as a black body. The ratio of equilibrium temperature of plate B and C is   , where α and β

integers having no common integral factor . Then, find the value of  −  .

3. Find the surface temperature of a small planet having a circular orbit revolving around the sun with
the time period T assuming sun and planet to be perfectly black bodies. Take radius of sun =R , mass
of sun=M, surface temperature of the sun is 0 .

4. A steel wire is heated to 1700 C and held between the two rigid supports which are 20 cm apart. The
wire is allowed to cool to a temperature of 29.60 C . If the frequency of note produced when the wire
is plucked at the middle is 100K, then find the value of K. ( The density of steel is 7.8 103 kg / m3
and the coefficient of linear expansion of steel is 16 10−6 K −1 and Young modulus of steel
= 20  1010 N / m 2 ).

5. Two large plane parallel plates each of area A are placed parallel to each other in vacuum. The left
plate is a black body where as right plate is a grey body having emissivity "e". The left plate is

maintained at temperature T0. The equilibrium temperature of right plate is 1 . Then, find the
4

6. A vertical U tube is completely filled with a liquid of density ρ. The

inner cross-sectional area of each of the vertical arms of the U tube is
S, total volume of both the arms is V0 and volume of bottom arm is
negligible. Both the ends of the tube are of the same height. one of the
them is open to the atmosphere, and the other one is connected to flask
of volume V0 filled with an ideal mono-atomic gas.
Find the amount of the heat, which must be given to the gas to drive
slowly half of the liquid out of the tube. The atmospheric pressure is
constant and equal to P0.Pressure of liquid vapors, effects of surface
tension and heat loss to the environment are negligible. Acceleration
due to gravity is g.

7. A uniform disc of mass M and radius R rotating with angular frequency 0 in its own plane is
gently placed on another identical disc which is fixed to a horizontal table. If the coefficient of
friction between the surfaces of the disc be µ, find the rate at which temperature of the two disc
system increases with time. It can be assumed that any loss in kinetic energy instantly changes into
heat energy. Specific heat capacity of material of disc is S. Assume no loss of heat to surroundings.

8. Three square plate having side length 2 , 2 and 2 2 is kept on horizontal smooth surface. Their
respective coefficient of thermal expansion are  , 2 and 4 respectively. The surface mass density of
each plate is same. Now temperature of system is increasing T, the shift in centre of mass of right most

plate is . Where a and b are integer with no common integral factor between them. Then, find
b
value of a – 4b. The centers of all the square lie on a straight line.

9. An adiabatic piston of mass m equally divides an

insulated container of total volume V0 and length . A
light spring connects the piston to the right wall. The
container has helium gas . The pressure on both side of
piston is P0. The container starts moving with constant
acceleration 'a' towards right , find the stretch of the
spring when acceleration of piston equals acceleration
of container .(Assume displacement of the piston
≪ and adiabatic exponent of gas is  )

An adiabatic cylinder has 8 gram of helium. A light

10. smooth adiabatic piston is connected to a light spring of
force constant 30 N/m. The other end of spring is
connected with block of mass 1 kg kept on a horizontal
surface of coefficient of friction µ=0.3. Area of cross-
section of cylinder is A=25 cm2.
Initially the spring is in a relax position and the temperature of the gas is 400 K. The gas is slowly
heated for sometime by means of an electric heater so as the block M just starts moving. Find
(a) the work done by the gas
(b) the final temperature
(c) heat supplied by the heater
