LESSON 1 force and motion

Vocabulary (Fnet=M . A)
Force: push or pull
External world: Everything around the object
that exerts forces on it.
System: object/s of interest.
Contact force: an object from outside touches a system and exerts force on it.
Field force: force exerted without any contact with the system.
Net force: sum of all forces on an object.

Laws
Newtons first law: balanced force (directly proportional)
Inertia: newtons 1st law.
Equilibrium: fnet=0

Newtons second law: f= m . a (inversely proportional)

Practice
1. A sky diver falls downward through the air at constant velocity
(the air exerts and upward force on the person)
2. You hold a softball in the palm of your hand and toss it up. Draw
the diagram while the ball is still touching your hand.

3. After the soft ball leaves your hand, it rises slowing down.

4. After the softball reaches its maximum height, it falls down

speeding up.
Practice num 2.
6. Two horizontal forces 225N snd 165N are exerted on a canoe. If
these forces are applied in the same direction, find the net force.

7. If the same two forces in the previous problem are applied in

opposite directions, what will the net force be.

9. A spring scale is used to exert a net force of 2.7 N on a cart. If the

cart’s mass is 0.64kg what is the carts acceleration.

10. Kamira is learning how to ice skate. She wants her mother to
pull her along so that she has acceleration of 0,80 m/a2, if
Kamira’s mass is 27.2 kg with what force does her mother need to
pull her?
Lesson 2 weight and drag forces
Vocabulary (W= M . GA)
Weight: is the gravitational force experienced by that object.
Gravitational field: a vector that relates an objects mass to the gravitational force it
experiences at a given location.
Drag force: the force exerted by a fluid on an object opposing motion through the
fluid.
Terminal velocity: FD=FG

Practice
16. You place a 4.0kg watermelon on a spring scale that measures in newtons.
What is the scale’s reading?

17. You place a 22.50kg tv on a spring scale, if the scale reads 235,2 N what is
the gravitational field?

18. A 0.50 kg pig is lifted from the ground. What is the smallest force needed to
lift it? Describe the motion resulting from this minimum force.
Lesson 3 newtons third law.
Vocabulary
Interaction pair: two forces that are in opposite directions, have equal magnitudes
and act on different objects
Newtons 3rd law: all forces come in pair
Tension: force that a string or rope exerts
Normal force: perpendicular contact force that a surface exerts on another surface.

Practice:
A 50 kg bucket is being lifted by a rope. The rope Will not break if the tension is
525N or less. The bucket started at rest, and after being lifted 3m it moves 3m/s2 if
the acceleration is constant is the rope in danger of breaking?

Diego and Mika are trying to remove a tire from Diego’s car when they
pull together in the same direction Mika with a force of 23 N and Diego
with a force of 31 N they just barely get the tire to move off the wheel.
What is the magnitude of the force between the tire and the wheel.
