PARAGRAPH 1

WHY DO TROPICAL CYCLONES OCCUR IN LATE SUMMER?

The seas’ surface temperatures are at their peak which strengthens the
cyclones as they need warm moist air to develop.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF CORIOLIS FORCE?

The deflection of the wind strengthens the cyclonic storm’s

clockwise/anticlockwise circulation ,while latent heat adds more energy as
the tropical cyclone requires heat as well to intensify.

STAGE DEVELOPMENT OF CYCLONE CHENESO?

Cheneso’s peak intensity was recorded at 140km (sustained winds) and

165km(wind gusts) . Resulting in it developing into a category 2 cyclone in
the Saffir-Simpson and Beaufort scales.

WHY CAN’T CATEGORY 1 TROPICAL CYCLONES BE MORE

DESTRUCTIVE(DAMAGING) THAN CATEGORY 5 TROPICAL CYCLONES?

Category 5 tropical cyclones are the most intense tropical cyclones on the
Saffir-Simpson scale and are known to be highly destructive, whereas
category 1 cyclones are not as intense. Category 1 tropical cyclones cannot
compare to Category 5 tropical cyclones because Category 1 cyclones are
smaller in size, have lower wind speeds and would not cause as much
destruction to infrastructure as Category 5 tropical cyclones would.

PARAGRAPH 2

HOW DID TROPICAL CYCLONE CHENESO IMPACT THE ENVIRONMENT?

After its passage, South-Western parts of the country were flooded.

Riverbanks were eroded and water supplies such as dams were polluted.
Cyclone Cheneso also caused landslides in which infrastructure such as
roads and bridges were destroyed, and water sources were contaminated.
This then resulted in wildlife being displaced and, in some cases, killed.

HOW DID TROPICAL CYCLONE CHENESO IMPACT THE ECONOMY?

The tourism sector was negatively affected as some tourist attractions which
led to a decline in income for many people. People were retrenched and
some fired because of the declining rate of income. Crops were destroyed
due to the floods and landslides in areas such as the Betsiboka Delta rice
fields. There was a decline in the fishing industry as the landslides negatively
affected the production of fish. Furthermore, stored foods such as grains
were flooded and destroyed alone with seeds and stored fertilizers. The
drowning of crops and cattle led to farmers not receiving income.

HOW DID TROPICAL CYCLONE CHENESO IMPACT PEOPLE/COMMUNITIES?

Food insecurity led to thousands of people having malnutrition and dying.

The affected areas such as the Betsiboka rice fields and fishing zones,
northern sugar cane fields and other fishing and rice fields brought a higher
rate of unemployment and low income.
