Lily and Daniel found a way to have the kitchen that they
both dreamed of, thanks to Wren

hen Lily Edwards and her partner Daniel
Potter moved into their 1930s semi in
Kent in 2019 with their goldendoodle,
Oakley, they immediately decided that the kitchen
would be the first room they would renovate.
Even though the entire house needed some TLC,
the kitchen would be the focal point of their home
as they wanted a sociable space to welcome
friends and family. ‘Daniel has a massive family, and
I am also very family oriented, and we love to have
friends over for dinners and parties,’ Lily explains.
Here, as part of the #Wrenovation series, which
shines a spotlight on real customer kitchen
renovations, the couple share how Wren helped
them to create a kitchen they love.
Which style?
Lily and Daniel both love home styling, and Lily
says that Daniel is particularly talented when it
comes to design. 'There was no room that didn’t
get some of Daniel’s magic as he goes around
and sparks everything up, making it pretty,’ she
says. Although when it came to the kitchen, the
pair had different creative visions. Lily dreamed of
a space with a strong industrial vibe featuring an
exposed brick wall, colours to complement the
brick slips, a Belfast sink and oak worktops. Daniel,
meanwhile, wanted shiny and modern laminate
surfaces and was pushing for blue-coloured
cupboards and quartz worktops.
While they may have had different opinions on
the look of the kitchen, they both agreed that the
main feature of the room should be the island and,
says Lily, ‘a place where our guests could sit, while
also segregating the space from the cooking zone’.
Dream experience
Knowing that they needed advice on designing
and styling the room – and inspired by the
positive reviews of Wren Kitchens they’d seen on
Instagram – the couple headed to their local Wren
showroom. They were very satisfied with what was
on offer and felt reassured immediately as they
received a great quote. ‘We knew that the quality
of the products wasn’t going to be matched
elsewhere,’ explains Lily.
The couples’ Wren designer helped them
to decide the best options to suit their needs,
showing the pair how to optimise the space.
Wren’s Virtual Reality Experience gave Lily and
Daniel the opportunity to see the proposed design
and how it would look, and work, once built.
‘It was amazing,’ says Lily, who recalls that the

Top of Lily's wishlist was a Belfast
sink. 'It reminds me of my
childhood home,' she says
VR Experience felt like stepping into the real
kitchen, which was very reassuring for the couple.
The designer also helped them find the perfect
solution to their aesthetic differences, proposing
that they could add wood worktops to the island
while having quartz in the rest of the kitchen.
‘The designer was so helpful,’ Lily says, ‘she showed
us some ideas of two-tone kitchens to help us
incorporate both ideas into the design. We now
have a marble-effect quartz, which we loved as
soon as we saw it in the showroom.’ They also
added in wooden scaffold board shelves to
complement the industrial feel.
As well as resolving the design and aesthetic of
their much-loved new kitchen, Lily and Daniel also
discovered that they could get all their appliance
needs through Wren, who incorporated a cooker
hood, induction hob, double oven and fridge-
freezer into the package. Lily was particularly
happy with the hob as its sleek, minimalistic
design sits perfectly with her love of the industrial
look. ‘It’s very easy to clean and fits wonderfully
with the quartz worktop,’ she says.
Heart of the home
Lily and Daniel were delighted with the service
they received from Wren; from the moment they
first entered the showroom to the day of delivery.
‘Wren was very caring and considerate around our
needs and worked out timings that best suited us,
which was amazing!’ says Lily. ‘The experience was
flawless, we had fantastic communication, and
nothing was a problem for Wren!’
The couple are even more delighted now that
they can enjoy their dream kitchen every day. ‘We
spend all of our time in the kitchen now, in fact we
barely use our living room,’ says Lily. ‘Sometimes on
a Friday evening we might make cocktails and sit
at the island and just enjoy ourselves! But the best
is when we have friends and family over; it’s just
such a nice space to be,’ she says.

What inspired you to start
your business?
‘After studying a design course at
university where I specialised in
glass-blowing, I fell in love with
creating things with my hands.

By experimenting with paint, rugs, artwork and an abundance of plants,
Anna Phillips gave her plain rental a quirky new look

My story
We started renting this house seven years ago.
It’s owned by my friend Ed’s parents and was
originally a house share for him and some other
friends. Eventually they all moved out and Ed bought
his own place after he had children, so his parents
were looking for a new tenant. The house was
perfect for us, as there are two bedrooms on the
first floor and two in the attic, as well as two shower
rooms plus an extra living room in the basement
where my teenage sons can hang out.
When we first moved in, it was white everywhere,
but we’ve gradually transformed each room with

been thrifty and tried to find ways to make a place
look nice on a budget. I’d describe my style as
eclectic, boho and Scandi.
Luckily, our landlords are happy for us to make
changes as long as we paint it white again before
we leave. It’s a lovely friendly area and we pay a very
reasonable £700 a month in rent, so we have no
plans to move any time soon. However, when the
children move out in the future, we might end up
buying something smaller. One day I’d love a 1930s
semi as they have nice proportions and a wider
hallway, but we’re very happy here for now.

A BIT ABOUT ME
I’m Anna Phillips, 38, a florist. I live
here with my husband, Craig, 47, a
store manager, and my sons, Liam, 19,
Harrison, 17, and Caleb, 15. We share
our home with our Welsh collie, Poppy,
chihuahua, Cassie, cat, Frida and our
12 budgies.

WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE
Most of the house was white except for
a mustard ceiling in the living room and
an aubergine feature wall in the kitchen,
which had to go. As we're renting, we
couldn’t make any major changes like
replacing the kitchen or bathroom.
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN
We’ve added lots of earthy tones through
paint and artwork, while I’ve hidden the
beige carpets with loads of rugs. I’m also
a big fan of adhesive vinyl, upcycling
furniture and layering up textures with
boho cushions and throws. Lots of plants
bring the place to life as well!
MY FAVOURITE PART
My bedroom as it’s so big, airy and
tranquil. It’s a lovely retreat at the end of
the day.

‘The pink sofa from City Sofa
on eBay was a lockdown buy,’
says Anna. ‘I love the Patti Smith
photography print, which I’ve had ‘When we first moved in, this room had white walls and a mustard-coloured ceiling, but we lived
for years – it’s followed me from with it for a long time as the ceiling is so high that it seemed like a big job to change it. At first,
house to house’ we painted the walls a moody blue and later a dark purple as I felt the large room could take it.
However, it started to feel a bit oppressive and clashed with the fireplace. After living with it for
a year, I went for more neutral tones. We picked Intense Taupe on the walls and Dusky Petal on
the ceiling, both by Wilko. It’s a great backdrop for my artwork from Suzy Broome, Jan Skacelik
and Sian Jordan. I’d like a proper fireplace, but we’ve made the most of this one by painting the
surround, adding vinyl tile stickers and fitting a Dimplex electric fire to create a focal point.’

Kitchen
As her home is rented, Anna hasn’t been able to change the kitchen
units. However, she’s put her own stamp on the room with paint and
artwork. ‘There was a dark and dingy aubergine colour on the chimney
breast before, and the rest of the room was yellow,’ she says. ‘We opted
for a fresh green colour – Whispering Sage by Wilko – changed the light
shades and added terrazzo-effect vinyl to the island for a new look.’
If she owned the house, Anna admits she’d probably remove the island
and replace it with a table, which would be more comfortable to sit at.
‘I’d also take all the top cupboards off and have open shelves,’ she says.

How to
decorate a
rented home
Make style updates on a budget
without losing your deposit

Tile stickers and self-adhesive

wallpaper are ideal for rentals as they
are easy to remove. Another option is
to cut large MDF panels, wallpaper
them and lean them inside alcoves or
against the wall at regular intervals.
Dunelm’s wooden panel natural

work well for this.

Hang artwork using Command

avoid damaging the walls. Alternatively,
prop them on shelves and furniture or

New curtains can make a huge

difference to a room and you can store
the old ones to put back up when you
leave. You can also take them with you
and adapt them to fit a different window
or use the fabric for a future project.

Buying a sofa for a rental property is

always tricky if you don’t intend to live
there long-term. However, quality
pieces can often be picked up
second-hand and will hold their value,
so if they won’t fit in your next home,
you can sell them on. Just type in your
favourite sofa brands when you search
on sites like eBay and Facebook
Marketplace, or try John Pye Auctions
which sells returns, overstock and
ex-display pieces as well as furniture
from retailers that have closed down.

Hallway
After the hall and landing were
re-painted white, Anna added some
colour blocking using cheap tester
pots to create interest. ‘The narrow
space just felt plain and boring
before so I needed to liven it up,’
she says. ‘It didn’t cost much – just
the price of a couple of tester pots. I
use a local company called Seagulls
Anna painted a large arch in a colour match of Farrow in Leeds that recycles leftover and

‘Although there are two shower rooms in the house, the first floor
shower room gets used more often than the one in the basement.
‘It’s more convenient being near the bedrooms so there’s often a
queue in the mornings,’ says Anna. ‘We painted the walls in a rich
dark blue – Intense Blueberry by Wilko – to cover up the less-than-
perfect walls in here. It looks great against the white sanitaryware.
I’ve also chosen plants like ferns and Spanish moss that love the
humidity.’ Although a shower is cheaper to run in a household of five,
Anna does miss a bath. ‘If I was ripping everything out and starting
from scratch, I’d love to squeeze in a roll-top bath with a shower over it.’

What I learned
Since you can’t get rid of the carpets in a rental, covering them
up with several rugs in different sizes and shapes makes a big
difference. It all adds to the boho vibe, too.

droopy hydrangea by removing excess leaves, cutting the stems
at an angle and plunging them in deep boiling water. I also like to
transform plain pampas grass using food colouring in the sink.
You just blow dry them with a hairdryer afterwards to fluff them
back up again!

skills over the years to achieve her timeless coastal look on a tight budget

My story
I got married at 23, and Iain and I wanted to buy a
house to start married life in. We both grew up not
far from Morecambe and wanted to stay local.
It’s a lovely area – I can walk to the sea, and there are
plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants in the main
town. This was the first house we looked at, and we
knew straight away that it was the one. It had such
great potential.
The house originally had three bedrooms and a
bathroom, but there were opportunities everywhere.
I loved the idea of making the whole of the
downstairs an open-plan space, which was quite

A table from Wayfair has been teamed with
black-and-white Eames Eiffel-style chairs
which Naomi found on eBay. The oak laminate
flooring is from Quick-Step and the Henley
glass light is from The Soho Lighting Company
unusual at the time. There was also a huge loft with
good head height, and as we were planning to have
children, it was a way of providing more bedrooms in
the future, although we didn’t need to do everything
at once. After getting the keys, we briefed the builder
and worked on the house solidly for six months,
living with Iain’s mum and spending all our free time
renovating before we moved in.
Over the last 15 years, we’ve put in a new kitchen
and bathroom, added a conservatory and gone
up into the loft to get two more bedrooms and a
shower room. I wanted a third baby and Iain was
keen if we did the loft conversion, so it was a deal.
Décor-wise, I’m always changing things up, which is
fun. It means I never get bored!

WHERE I LIVE
My home is a five-bedroom 1930s
semi in a village near Morecambe,
Lancashire. We bought it in March 2008
as newlyweds.
WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE
Basically everything, but mainly I
wanted to change the downstairs to
be one open-plan space. Since moving
in 15 years ago, we’ve done plenty to
the house structurally from adding a
conservatory to converting the loft.
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN
I change my look quite a lot, but it always
starts with neutrals, and I’ve stayed true
to panelling for many years. I do add in
tiny pops of pastel colour along with
the off-whites and greys, but I like classic
design and an uncluttered feel.
MY FAVOURITE PART
It’s got to be my new bedroom. It has a
Scandinavian feel with the pale green
and the wood. Having the bed in a new
position against the wall of panelling
makes much more sense and I love the
high sides of the headboard.

 I loved the idea of making
the whole of the downstairs

‘This was the first section in the space that I panelled,
and it was quite unusual to be doing that back in
2008. But I worked out how to do it and made friends
with the local timber merchant, who is amazing and
will cut all the pieces to size, and even deliver them
to me! Since then, the room has gone through quite
a few looks, but the panelling has remained. We like
to eat round the table and having alternate black and
white chairs has personalised the space. The alcoves
either side of the old chimney are really useful spaces
for storage, and I made my own unit out of a white
IKEA Billy bookcase and some baskets. I covered the
shelves in oak-effect stick-on film and found some
cheap baskets, and all for under £100!’

Living room
‘Because the living room is open-plan to the kitchen
and dining space, I was very conscious that the
whole scheme needed to flow. There was an original
wood-burner there, which needed replacing, and we
put in a more modern one. I’d already tried my hand
at panelling in the dining room first, so I was getting
much better at it by this point and have panelled two
big sections. I deliberately chose a sofa which would
fit snugly into the partition space and not stick out
past the wall, while wood-effect blinds from Dunelm
add an unfussy feel at the window. We also put

How to panel
kitchen units
Give your space a Shaker-style finish
with this DIY upcycle
Check out what sort of primer your kitchen
units need by researching on the internet
and whether it’s possible to paint them.
Thoroughly clean the units first to remove
any specks of dust or grease from the surface.
Unscrew all of the handles and consider
whether the handles will still go or whether a
different design would be more appropriate.
Decide how wide you would like the strips
of MDF around the edges of the units to be
and then take very precise measurements of
how long and how many strips you need.
Take your measurements to a local timber
merchant and have all the pieces cut to size
and ask advice on the best glue to fix them
securely in place.
Once all the strips have been attached and
dried, only then use the primer over the
whole surface and finally put on the topcoat
and reattach handles.
Kitchen
‘We’d had the Homebase kitchen put in back in 2008
and chose a cream high gloss with a walnut-effect
worktop. All these years on it felt dated, although there
was absolutely nothing wrong with it. The units were
sound, but I wasn’t keen on the shiny surface and the
colour didn’t go with the off-whites and pale greys
I had everywhere else. Replacing the whole kitchen
was out of the question, so I looked into how I could
change it. I wasn’t even sure you could paint on the
gloss surface, but after lots of research I found a primer
that was specifically for gloss units. I worked out how
to give it a Shaker look, with strips of panelling around
the outside, and set to work. It took me a week, as I
was doing it in my spare time here and there, but I’m
thrilled with the result, and it feels like a new kitchen.’

‘We were determined to fit a bathroom on the newly converted loft floor,
between the two bedrooms. A shower room made much more sense and
choosing a rounded edge design also gives you more room. I went for black for
the enclosure to give a bit of personality. As I’d had such a good experience with
wet wall panels in the other bathroom, I went for a similar version, this time in
a marbled finish to give the wall some ‘wow’ factor. Everything came from a local
bathroom company, which was a straightforward way of doing it.’

Evan’s bedroom
‘Evan’s room is the only one with wallpaper
in it, and I really like the three-quarter
panelling with the strip of cloud wallpaper
above. This was originally my daughter’s
room up in the loft conversion, which
she bagsied when the loft was finished
in 2019, but she soon realised that her
old bedroom on the first floor was much
bigger, and asked to go back. Evan was no
longer a baby and didn’t need to be next to
us anymore, so it was a great opportunity
to totally revamp the room. We got him
a proper bed, and of course I was set on
panelling the walls. I’ve carried on the
cloud and sky theme with some fun
hot air balloons which he loves.'
Ava’s
bedroom
‘Ava’s bedroom has a style
that will last and that will
grow with her. Her bed is
very similar to ours, with
the high headrest and in a
neutral grey, and I’ve kept
the furniture white for a
clean fresh, feel. I've added
some subtle pastel touches,
for a bit of warmth.’
Bathroom
‘The new bathroom was installed in 2015,
but it’s still looking good. We chose simple
white sanitaryware and, as it’s not a big
room, we were careful with the size of the
items we chose, to make sure that they
were compact and wouldn’t overwhelm
the space. I’m not a huge fan of tiles, with
all the grout to constantly clean, so I was
an early fan of wet wall panels, which just
wipe clean. They were fairly new then, and
it was also a chance to add some colour
and a big dollop of character to the room.
You need to consult with your plumber
first, to check measurements as they
come in pieces, and they also need to be
confident with fitting them. We chose a
swirly option with browns and greys,
and it’s standing up well.’
I like classic design
and an uncluttered feel
A single bed from Argos was the starting
point in Evan’s room and after panelling
the walls, Naomi made sure that the
Pax wardrobe from IKEA was under the

What I learned
You don’t need to buy expensive paint. If you love
the colour range of a particular company, most DIY
stores run a matching service by Dulux which will
mix up the colour for you for a lot less money.
Trust yourself to do some of the work. Panelling
and decorating have become second nature to me.
Watch videos on YouTube that show you what to do
and make friends with your local timber merchant.
If you get bored quickly, like me, choose solid,
classic design basics that won’t immediately go out
of fashion. Then it’s easy to change things up with
accessories, and also saves a lot of money.

INSTRUCTIONS
1 Take the large hoop and
secure a few pieces of foliage to
one side. We used eucalyptus. If
your foliage isn’t wire-stemmed,
use floristry wire to hold it
securely in place.

2 Attach three sprigs of

gypsophila, also known as
baby’s breath, between your
foliage using the same method.
Now add three large flowers to
the hoop. Odd numbers look
more appealing, so if you have
smaller blooms go for five or
seven flowers, and so on.

3 Use a glue gun to affix

wooden letters to the centre of
your length of ribbon, spelling
out a name or word of your
choice. Once set, wrap the
ribbon around the hoop, just
above the centre point, and
secure each side using the
glue gun. Attach a loop of
twine to the top to hang.

4 To make the smaller hoop,

I’m Emily Brinkley, 29. I’m a graphic
designer / illustrator for a company that
designs stationery, greetings cards, board

WHERE I LIVE
My home is a one-bedroom flat in
Bromley, Greater London. I live above a
shop on the top floor with my dog, Dolly.
I moved here in August 2021.

WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE

The layout was fine and liveable, but
the entire flat was beige and dull and
screaming out for a makeover. I wanted
to bring my love of retro style to the
place to make it feel more 'me.'

HOW I MADE IT MY OWN

I absolutely love vibrant colours and
patterns and instantly knew wallpaper
prints, paint and bright accessories
would add personality and bring life into
my home. Filling the space with second-
hand finds has been a quick and easy
way to bring character to the space.

MY FAVOURITE PART
I thought I was stuck with the boring
beige kitchen as I didn't have a big
budget to work with. I’m delighted with
the retro look achieved by replacing the
cupboard doors and worktop – it looks
like a brand-new kitchen!

 Living room
The space is smaller than Emily’s last living room, and a different
shape, so it took a while for her to get the layout right with her
existing furniture. ‘I kept switching things around but once I’d
decided to put my sideboard against the longest wall, everything
else fell into place. To avoid crowding the room, I’ve had to
store some smaller pieces in the loft for now. The pink sofa and
yellow chair came with me and were a great find at DFS because
they were the right budget and style. I’ve gone for a deliberate
mismatch in this room and picked out the colours from the
Orla Kiely Pulse Yellow rug in the accessories.’

Emily’s kitchen was her biggest makeover
project where her handy dad replaced the
oven and gas hob with white appliances,
tiled the splashback and changed the
beige laminate to a white worktop. ‘The
kitchen wasn’t that old and didn’t need
replacing, plus I didn’t have the budget,
so I needed another solution,’ says Emily.
‘My brother had recently replaced his
cupboard doors and recommended
a company called Homestyle who
sell custom-made kitchen doors and
accessories. I found they had the exact
teak look I wanted. They offer a made-to-
measure service and what’s even better

How to work
with wallpaper
Follow these tips to nail a gorgeous
scheme of colour and pattern
If you’re inspired by 1960s and 1970s designs, like
Emily, but don’t want to turn your home into a
museum, pick a retro-inspired brand like Orla Kiely or
Scion Living. Lust Home also sell a fun retro wallpaper
collection. Another way to keep vintage prints fresh is
to go for modern colours, like pinks and blues.

Avoid crowding small spaces, or making a room feel

too busy, by papering two opposite walls. If you still
feel hesitant, put large wallpaper samples into frames
and hang as art.

To make patterned wallpaper the main talking point,

leave surrounding walls white. Emily stepped this up a
gear in the living room with a cheap white wallpaper
embossed with squares to add texture, subtle interest,
and hide uneven surfaces. The style is a throwback to
her nan’s house when she was a child.

Fitting a picture rail around the room and painting

the wall and ceiling above in white is also a good way
to balance the vibrancy of wallpaper. At the same time,
you’ll save money, as you won’t need as many rolls.

Do your research on Instagram and Pinterest and,

if you can, find a picture you can recreate so you’re
assured the wallpaper pattern complements the
rest of your scheme.

was a present from my parents and has only ever had one previous
owner, so she was pleased it was going to a happy home. I like to

yellow metal lockers as bedside tables. It’s so bright and cheerful
in here, even on gloomy days.’

Emily wanted to rip out the boring beige bathroom
and start again but she didn’t have the budget.
She was wary of using wallpaper in the windowless
room but desperately wanted to bring in pattern.
‘I didn’t know anything about vinyl and happened
to start following Faye Jennifer Vinyl Design on
Instagram and realised this could be an easy,
effective solution. I took a swatch of the vinyl to
B&Q, and they colour-matched the wall paint to the
green in the floral pattern. This project has been my
biggest success. No plumbing, no tiling, just a cheap
and cheerful way to inject personality.’

What I learned
I had a moment of madness and bought orange paint for the hallway on a whim.
I painted two coats, but I hated it and spent the rest of the weekend painting
everything white again. This proved that I shouldn’t rush into things – and I should
definitely use a tester first!
I was wary of using vinyl for the first time, but it turned out great. I lined the piece
up to an edge and peeled the backing off, sticking down one section at a time. I
used a credit card to smooth the surface and trimmed the edges with a craft knife.

 SHELF LIFE
Having purchased my first home as a solo
buyer at 24 years old, I was eager to come up
with ways to make my home look unique and

My problem kitchen
The layout of the kitchen was impractical and had
very little worktop space. It was also quite dark and
dingy. The furniture was old, there wasn’t enough
storage and it just felt generally uncared for.
How I made it work
I love the outdoors and I was inspired by all
the green and yellow shades of nature. I chose
mint-green units from Wren Kitchens and kept it
light and airy with white worktops and walls and
then decorated with splashes of yellow. It was

husband, Saul Díaz Reales. Our home
is a semi-detached, three-bed house in
Biggleswade, Bedfordshire and we’ve
been here for two and a half years.

e immediately loved the
overall vibe of this house.
The first time we looked
around, we knew it was
‘The One’ and could feel it had a really happy
energy. It needed quite a bit of work, but we were
fully prepared and couldn’t wait to get started.
We both love to cook so it was important
that the new-look kitchen was a practical
space. We completely reconfigured the layout
and put in a breakfast bar to make it more
sociable. This meant moving the gas supply for
the hob to the opposite side of the kitchen and
we also had to rewire the electrics. To achieve
the layout we wanted, we had to relocate the
soil pipe and then the walls were reskimmed
ready for the units.
I’m a big colour fan and know how it can
transform a room and also your mood. I fell in
love with the green units as soon as the kitchen
consultant showed us the colour range. I love
the shade and it really fills the kitchen with joy.
I chose brushed brass handles for the doors and
brass sockets to bring warmth into the room.
The work took about three months and
although we were thoroughly bored of
microwave meals by the end of it all, it was
totally worth it. It’s exactly what we wanted.

BEFORE My problem bathroom
The shower was leaking through the floor, the
enamel on the cast-iron bath was flaking off,
and the walls and panelling had both been
painted a light blue which wasn’t to my taste.
There were two built-in cupboards, one of which
smelt of damp, and both had gothic-style detailing
that felt a bit dated.
How I made it work
To keep costs down, I thought carefully about
what things we could keep and revamp, as well

‘Everything was painted pale blue before
which felt a bit overpowering. Opting for a
monochrome palette with pops of terracotta
and rattan gives it a more sophisticated vibe,’
says Karen. ‘I also added the round mirror to
introduce some curves’
as the type of storage we would need. Balancing
the monochrome base with warmer elements of
light wood, rattan, terracotta and foliage creates a
harmonious scheme that has totally transformed
the space.
My favourite part
I love the radiator cover we revamped with paint
and a new French cane panel. It was a satisfying
job stapling it to the frame when wet and seeing
how great it looked when it dried.
T
he size of the bathroom really appealed when we first
viewed this house, and I loved the roll-top bath by the
window. Although the pale blue colour on the walls and
panelling wasn’t really me (I’m more of a green person),
I felt I could live with it while we prioritised painting the living room
and main bedroom. When the shower started leaking into the living
room below, we decided to get a new cubicle and embark on a mini
bathroom makeover.
The biggest change was removing the old shower, tray, screen,
partition wall and grey tiles before installing a new Crittall-style design.
Then we tackled the dated built-in storage. This involved taking doors
off an impractical high cupboard over the bath and turning it into a
faux plant wall, as well as swapping a bulky base cupboard for a slim
console table. A £10 mirrored wall cabinet, which I upcycled, has also
solved the problem of no storage or mirror above the sink. Having
the cast-iron bath re-enamelled by a specialist company was another
way to reuse what was already there. The final piece of the jigsaw was
laying vinyl flooring over the old tiles and adding new artwork with
terracotta accents to tie in with the scheme.
We did make a few mistakes along the way though. At first, I
painted the woodwork teal and the walls white, but Warren said it
looked too bright. He suggested a deep navy, but we compromised
with an off-black, which looks a bit more grown-up and classic. I also
bought cheap black plastic frames for the artwork but soon realised I
needed to up my frame game and invested in better quality oak ones.
Even though we kept the old basin, toilet and bath, the changes make
it feel like a completely new bathroom.
‘We took the doors off this cabinet and sawed off
the detailing in the middle,’ says Karen. ‘After painting

01 Update existing pieces

‘The original radiator cover had fretwork in the
middle with Gothic arches but the frame was
decent so I knew it could be easily transformed,’ says
Karen. ‘I’ve always loved French cane as it has that
holiday vibe and I wanted to break up the dark wall
with a lighter tone. We ordered it online from Cane
Store, who advised on sizing and sent easy-to-follow
instructions. It’s also nice to have another surface for
displaying accessories.’

02 Re-think your storage

‘Although the room is quite large, it’s narrow in the
middle due to a chimney breast. ‘Previously, there
was a fitted base unit that jutted out too far into the
room and made the space feel narrow,’ says Karen. ‘It
had two doors and shelves, which made accessing
toiletries in boxes awkward. This slimmer console
table works much better. The rattan drawer fronts
tie in with the radiator cover opposite and the light
wood contrasts against the dark panelling. Make-up
and toiletries are easily accessible, with a drawer
each for everyday things, and there’s space beneath
for baskets where we can keep items used less often.’

03 03 Lay vinyl flooring

‘Although I didn’t mind the previous floor tiles, I
felt sheet vinyl flooring would pull our new look
together better and be warmer underfoot,’ says
Karen. ‘There was also a gap in the floor as the new
shower tray was slightly smaller than the old one,
so it made sense to have the old tiles screeded
over to make the floor level. After shopping around
and getting lots of samples, I found the perfect
monochrome design online. It only cost around
£150 and is easy to maintain with a steam cleaner.’

INGREDIENTS
200g baby new potatoes, thinly sliced 1 tbsp
olive oil 1 onion, finely sliced 6 medium eggs
150g Cooks&Co roasted red pepper strips,
drained 50g Cooks&Co semi-dried tomatoes,
roughly chopped 1 tbsp chopped parsley
salt and pepper to season
METHOD
1 Cook the potatoes in boiling water for around
5-6 minutes until just tender, then drain.
2 Heat the oil in a 20cm frying pan and fry the
onion for around 5 minutes. Add the potatoes and
cook for a further 3 minutes, then season with salt
and pepper.
3 Beat the eggs and mix in the peppers, tomatoes
and parsley, season and pour into the pan. Cook
on a low heat for 5-8 minutes, until set round the
edges. Place under a preheated grill for 5 minutes
to set. Allow to cool slightly before removing from
the pan.
COOK’S TIPS
This omelette is delicious served warm or cold for
picnics alongside a salad, and it can keep chilled in the
fridge for up to three days. Once you are confidient
with the recipe, try experimenting with the flavours
by incorporating different ingredients to suit your
taste. Adding a few jalapeños, for example, will bring
extra heat to this dish.
INGREDIENTS
For the salad
1 can (415g) peach halves in juice 2 red
onions 4 Romano red peppers 1 tbsp olive oil
salt and pepper 2 x 250g packs pre-cooked
puy lentils 100g pitted green olives handful
of rocket leaves
For the pesto
28g pack of flat-leaf parsley 75g pine nuts,
toasted 3 tbsp olive oil
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6.
Drain the can of peach halves, reserving the juice.
2 Peel the red onions and cut each one into 8
wedges. Remove the stalk and seeds from the
peppers and cut into chunks. Place onto a baking
sheet and spread into a single layer (divide
between two smaller sheets if you need to).
3 Whisk together 1 tbsp of peach juice, 1 tbsp
of olive oil, salt and pepper, then drizzle over the
peppers and onions and roast in the oven for 30
minutes until they start to char at the edges.
4 Meanwhile, make the pesto. Toast the pine
nuts in a dry frying pan for a minute until slightly
coloured. Roughly chop the parsley leaves and
stalks and place in a mini food processor with
50g of the pine nuts, 3 tbsp of olive oil and 3 tbsp
of peach juice. Blitz until you have a thick pesto.
Transfer to a bowl, season, and stir through a little
more peach juice or olive oil to loosen if needed.
5 Mix the lentils, olives, roasted peppers and onion
in a serving bowl. Slice and add the peaches. Stir
through the pesto and top with the rocket leaves
and the remaining pine nuts, to serve.

INGREDIENTS
2 x 220g frozen pizza dough balls, defrosted
100g pizza sauce or passata 200g grated
mozzarella 1 courgette, cut into ribbons
150g Cooks&Co roasted red and yellow
peppers, quartered 25g Cooks&Co tri-colour
jalapeño slices 100g feta cheese extra virgin
olive oil and basil leaves, to serve
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 240°C/220°C Fan/Gas Mark 9.
2 On a floured surface, roll out each dough ball
into a rough 30cm round and place on two large
lightly floured baking trays. Spread with the pizza
sauce or passata, leaving a 2cm border.
3 Sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese and top
with courgette ribbons, peppers and jalapeños.
Crumble over the feta and drizzle with a little olive
oil. Bake for 12-15 minutes in the hot oven.
4 Drizzle with a little extra olive oil, if liked, and
scatter over a few basil leaves to serve.
COOK’S TIPS
If you don’t have frozen pizza balls, you can use a
pizza base mix from a supermarket, which can be
made up in as little as 5 minutes, or you can use
ready made pizza bases, which you’ll find in the
freezer aisle. For a delicious flavour variation, swap the
feta for a few dollops of mascarpone or cream cheese
and add thinly sliced mushrooms, olives or capers.

CRISPY TOFU WITH SWEET AND
SOUR PEPPERS AND PINEAPPLE
PREP TIME 15 minutes
COOK TIME 20 minutes
SERVES 3-4
INGREDIENTS
For the sauce
4 tbsp soy sauce 6 tbsp pineapple juice (from
can used in main recipe) 3 tbsp tomato purée
4 tbsp rice vinegar 3 tbsp sugar 2 cloves
garlic, crushed pinch of chilli flakes
For the crispy tofu
280g tofu 2 tbsp cornflour salt and pepper
2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 can (435g) pineapple
chunks in juice, drained, juice reserved 1 yellow
pepper, thinly sliced 1 red pepper, thinly sliced
1 spring onion, thinly sliced 3-4 portions of
cooked rice, to serve
METHOD
1 Mix the sauce ingredients together and set aside.
2 Cut the block of tofu into small cubes. Put in a
mixing bowl and sprinkle over the cornflour and
plenty of salt and pepper. Toss together with your
hands so that the tofu is coated in the cornflour.
3 Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over
a high heat. Add the tofu and cook for 6 minutes,
tossing now and again, until golden and crisp.
Remove from the pan with a spatula, leaving the oil in
the pan, and put on kitchen paper to drain.
4 Keeping the pan over a medium-high heat, add
the pineapple chunks. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
5 Add the sliced peppers and cook for another 5
minutes, tossing now and again, until softened. Tip
the sauce into the pan and stir with the pineapple
and pepper. Cook for a couple of minutes so that the
sauce is bubbling and reduced but not cooked away.
6 Spoon rice into 3-4 bowls. Divide the peppers and
pineapple between the bowls, then add the crispy
tofu. Sprinkle with thinly sliced spring onion to serve.

INGREDIENTS
1 pack Geeta’s five seed roti flatbreads 2
chicken breasts, cut into large cubes 1 tbsp
paprika 1 tsp cumin powder 1 tsp ground
coriander seeds ½ tsp ground chilli 1 tsp
garlic powder 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tbsp oil
1 tsp salt red and green peppers, deseeded
and cut into large squares red onion, cut into
wedges 2 tbsp natural yoghurt fresh mint
and coriander leaves 1 lemon, cut into wedges
kebab sticks, pre-soaked in water
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/ Gas Mark 4
or ensure the grill or BBQ is up to temperature.
2 Mix the spices, salt, lemon juice and oil in a bowl.
3 Add the chicken and marinate for at least 10 minutes.
4 Load the kebab sticks with the chicken pieces
alternated with pieces of peppers and red onion.
5 Bake, grill or BBQ for 15-20 minutes until the chicken
is cooked through.
6 Warm the flatbreads according to the packet
instructions.
7 Serve the kebabs on the flatbread, garnished with
natural yoghurt, fresh mint and coriander leaves and
a squeeze of lemon.
COOK’S TIPS
Try marinating the chicken in the fridge overnight
to really enhance the flavour. To make this recipe
suitable for vegetarians, swap the chicken for paneer
or extra-firm tofu.

Pork skewers
PREPARATION TIME 15 minutes, plus
minimum 1 hour marinating
COOKING TIME 10 minutes, plus resting
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
● 4 garlic cloves, crushed ● 1 tbsp dried oregano,
plus extra to garnish ● 1 tbsp white wine
vinegar ● 125ml extra virgin olive oil ● 1kg pork
tenderloin, cut into 2cm cubes ● 500ml lager
● ½ bunch of fresh sage, leaves picked ● sea salt
and black pepper
To serve
● lemon wedges ● pickled sliced red onion
● sweet potato chips ● pitta bread ● green
pickled pepper ● Greek yoghurt ● chilli sauce
METHOD
1 Pound the garlic and oregano in a mortar and
pestle with a pinch of salt until a coarse paste
forms. Transfer to a large bowl, add the vinegar
and oil and stir to combine. Add the pork and
toss the pieces until well coated. Add the lager
and leave to marinate for a minimum of 1 hour or
overnight in the refrigerator for best results.
2 When ready to cook, thread the marinated pork
pieces onto metal skewers, adding sage leaves
between each piece as you go.
3 Heat a chargrill pan over a medium-high
heat. Cook the pork skewers on the chargrill,
turning occasionally, for about 8-10 minutes until
browned and cooked through. Season to taste
and set aside to rest for 5 minutes.
4 Scatter the pork skewers with some extra
oregano and serve with lemon wedges, sweet
potato chips, pitta bread, green pickled pepper,
Greek yoghurt and lightly pickled onion.
COOK'S TIP Marinating the pork in lager
overnight tenderises and deeply flavours the meat.

Carrot, parmesan and basil fritters
1 Heat the oil in a saucepan over a medium-high heat.
PREPARATION TIME 20 minutes (carrot fritters), Add the onion and garlic and sauté for 3–4 minutes until

roasted hazelnuts ● 1½ tbsp sherry vinegar, or to

For the prawns
● 12 tiger prawns, peeled, heads removed, tails
intact ● 2 garlic cloves, crushed ● 2 tbsp sherry
To serve
● roasted red onions or shallots ● griddled
sourdough ● salad leaves

METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6.
For the roasted romesco sauce, place the tomato,
pepper and garlic on a baking sheet and drizzle with
1 tbsp of the oil, season and roast for about 10
minutes until tender.
2 Halve or quarter the onions or shallots, depending
on their size, drizzle with a little oil and roast alongside
the romesco mixture.
3 When the romesco mixture is cool enough to
handle, squeeze the garlic from their skins (discard
skins), then transfer the roasted garlic, tomato, pepper
and any pan juices to a food processor or blender.

the crushed garlic, lime juice and zest. Mix well and

6 Spread a dollop of Tracklements tomato and chilli
chutney on each flatbread, spoon over some slaw and
top with the halloumi and rocket.
COOK’S TIP
To make your own flatbreads, combine 300g self-raising
flour with ½ tsp baking powder, 150g natural yogurt,
1 tsp salt and 2 tbsp water. Bring together into a rough
dough. Tip onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a
few minutes until smooth, then divide into four pieces.
Heat a frying pan over a high heat. Roll the dough out on
a lightly floured surface into rough ovals, then fry for 1-2
minutes on each side until golden and slightly charred.

Shallot and
chicken pastilla

PREPARATION TIME 10 minutes

COOKING TIME 1 hour 25 minutes, plus
30 minutes resting time
SERVES 6

INGREDIENTS
ł 2 tbsp vegetable oil ł 8 round shallots, peeled
and halved ł 2 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced ł 2
tsp ground cinnamon ł 2 tsp ground cumin ł 2 tsp
ground coriander ł 1 tsp turmeric ł ½ tsp fennel
seeds ł 4 chicken legs ł 500ml chicken stock
ł 1 tbsp clear honey ł 50g pistachios, chopped
ł 1 lemon, zested and juiced ł 85g dried apricots
ł small bunch of parsley, chopped ł 270g pack of
filo pastry ł 75g butter, melted ł icing sugar and
cinnamon for dusting ł quick pickled shallots

METHOD
1 Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large casserole dish and cook
the shallots and garlic for 8 minutes until soft. Add
the spices and stir for about 30 seconds, then add the

chicken. Pour in the chicken stock and season. Cover

with a lid and leave to simmer for 45 minutes.
2 Lift the chicken pieces onto a plate. Pour off half of
the cooking liquid, then add the honey and pistachios
to the remaining liquid and simmer until thick and
reduced by half, then turn off the heat. Meanwhile,
finely shred the chicken with two forks, discarding the
skin and bones. Return the chicken to the sauce and
stir in the lemon zest and juice, apricots and parsley.
3 Heat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Line
a large baking tray with baking paper. Put one sheet of
filo pastry on a work surface, brush all over with melted
butter, then top with another sheet, brushing as before.
Add a third of the chicken mixture in a line along one
long edge, then roll up into a cylinder, brushing the filo
with butter as you roll.
4 Starting from one end, wind the filo into a coil and
place on the baking sheet. Repeat twice more in
the same way, coiling each filo cylinder around the
previous one to make a larger spiral.
5 Brush with melted butter. Bake for 30-40 minutes,
until golden brown. It’s best eaten warm, so leave to
cool for 30 minutes. Dust with a pinch of icing sugar
and cinnamon and top with quick pickled shallots.

Greek honey, dark off the heat, add the honey, lemon juice and salt
and leave to one side.

baklava V set aside. Layer 7 sheets of filo pastry in a 22 x
30cm baking tray. Pour over a third of the butter/
oil mixture. Sprinkle over the walnuts and 50g of

MAKES 25 pieces 3 Cut the baklava into approximately 30 rectangles
then pour over the rest of the butter/oil mixture.
INGREDIENTS 4 Bake for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden
ł 150g sugar ł 150ml water ł 150g Rowse Greek brown. Remove from the oven and gently pour
honey ł 1 tbsp lemon juice ł pinch of salt ł 250g over the syrup and allow to sit overnight. In the
salted butter ł 50g vegetable oil ł 540g filo pastry morning, place into an airtight container and
– 14 sheets in total ł 50g dark chocolate chips, eat within 5 days. Before serving, melt a little
finely chopped, plus extra for decoration ł 75g chocolate and use to drizzle over the baklava slices
walnuts, finely chopped to decorate. Allow to harden before serving.

METHOD COOK’S TIPS

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°Fan/Gas Mark 4. Give this recipe a citrus twist by adding orange zest
To make a syrup, mix the sugar and water together into the syrup. If you have offcuts from the filo pastry
in a medium-sized saucepan and bring to a boil sheets, lay them at the bottom of the baking tin
over medium-high heat for 5-10 minutes. Switch before placing the whole sheets on top.

Your Home Made Perfect!
What can we expect from series four?
More of the same! It definitely feels bigger – we’ve
got our returning team of six architects, and we
have an amazing range of budgets, so there’s
accessible stuff and then quite out-of-this-world
stuff. We’ve also done our first-ever flat – that
particular project is with the actor, Jill Halfpenny,
which was a lovely one to do. We’ve gone all over
the country to look at personal properties and
public buildings that reflect the inspiration which
each of the architects have chosen for their
particular pitch. That was lovely for me to go around
with a different architect and see what makes them
tick but also from a viewer’s perspective, there’s
some really gorgeous, aspirational design that
hopefully they’ll feel is somewhat applicable to their
own projects.
Can you tell us a bit about your favourite
transformation from the series?
I always feel like I can’t really say because it’s like
choosing a favourite child and our architects are
quite competitive with each other. I’ve got to go
back and sit with them in the hub, hopefully, in a
few months’ time! My favourite ones are always
when we’ve got what is seemingly a ‘normal house’
in a ‘normal area’ that you assume is very limited in
terms of scope and what you can do and then we
just blow the doors off, literally and otherwise.

What have you learnt about interiors from
your time presenting the show?
I’ve learned not to be too influenced by what you

acceptable to do. I think it’s about really

afraid to do things a bit differently. Often, we think

What are the key things people should
consider when creating a dream home?
I think they should consider how they use the
home. Sometimes you hear people say ‘what we
want is a big open-plan space’ and actually, you
might have very small children and you know, you
like a bit of peace and quiet. Maybe those smaller,
more intimate spaces will work better for where you
are as a family at the moment. Think about where
you spend your time. If you’re really outdoorsy, don’t
be afraid to spend a bit more money on what’s
outside, whether that’s a patio area or having a
canopy over the house so you can dine outside

more often. Don’t always just be inspired by houses
– go to a hotel, anywhere, and feel like you can be
inspired to break the rules in a similar way.
Do you have any tips for changing the feel of a
room without breaking the bank?
I think we underestimate how transformative it can
be to just rethink a space. Just shifting your furniture
can make a big difference. Think about turning the
couch so it’s facing the outside, or turn that little
dead corner into a space for you. Take a chair that’s
been sitting upstairs unused and do a bit of DIY
upholstery or pimp it out with some cushions and
create a little area where you can have a reading
nook or a place where you can have a morning
coffee in peace. We can create these little zones
with stuff we already own, without spending any
money. Again, this comes back to knowing yourself
and knowing what’s important. Maybe meditation
is important to you so transform that unused corner
with a mat, chair, nice cushions and make it a space
to retreat to before the chaos starts. Paint your walls
a different colour, paint the stairs. I think it’s the kind
of stuff that can be easily fixed but will change the
feel of a space really quickly.
Where’s home for you?
Home is North London. It’s quite eclectic – I like to
approach my home in the same way I approach my
wardrobe in that I don’t buy anything unless I love it.
I try to buy things that I feel connected to, whether
that’s something I’ve picked up on my travels or an
object that’s followed me around since I left home.
It’s things I feel really connected to so that it doesn’t

matter where I am or where we move to – they
come with me and they’re less about fitting in with
the space and more about being important to me
or to my family, marking an occasion or a holiday or
a time in my life. I try to be disciplined in not
slavishly following trends and knowing what I like
and what’s important to me.
How do you want to feel in your home?
Relaxed. I love colour and texture and I wouldn’t say
I’m a minimalist, but it is really key that when I walk
in the door and take off my shoes – that’s the first
thing we do when we come into the house – there’s
an out breath and a sense that you can drop your
shoulders, and there’s safety and there’s relaxation.
What in your home makes you happy?
We have this beautiful striped umbrella by a British
company called Boho Parasol Hut. It signals it’s
summer when it comes out in our house and we
open the double doors in the kitchen, out to the
garden and it just means the kids are outside
playing, there’s a paddling pool up, the trees are all
leafy and lush and it just feels very… I don’t know,
I suppose it reminds me of childhood and things
being loose and free in the summertime.
What’s your favourite room in your home?
The bedroom. I’ve recently got a new bed and
we’ve taken everything else out of the room –
partly because I underestimated the size of the bed!
We’ve got a lovely headboard with cream wool
fabric that feels really lovely and luxurious. There’s
the bed, the side tables and that is it and I kind of
love that because it has that sanctuary feel. And
then the girls mill in in the morning; there’s enough
room for everyone. It’s really lovely.
What would we find on your bedside table?
A kindle, although I currently have Matthew
McConaughey’s book, called Greenlights, that I’m
reading. I have a journal – I love to do a bit of
journaling at night-time or a to-do list first thing;
a candle, there’s a Mama Moon one on there at the
moment; a pint of water and magnesium tablets –
I always take magnesium before bed to help with
my sleep – and a little silk eye mask.
What’s next?
I’ve got a jewellery range called FRKL that I’ve been
working a lot on. We’ve got a new collaboration out
with a brilliant fashion brand called Damson
Madder and our own collection coming out, too, so
that’s been keeping me busy. It’s been quite an
intense time, with lots of travel, so I’m trying to be in
the garden, at home and having lunch with the girls
and all of that stuff. It’s a bit of a gear change.
