WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE

Most of the house was white except for
a mustard ceiling in the living room and
an aubergine feature wall in the kitchen,
which had to go. As we're renting, we
couldn’t make any major changes like
replacing the kitchen or bathroom.

HOW I MADE IT MY OWN

We’ve added lots of earthy tones through
paint and artwork, while I’ve hidden the
beige carpets with loads of rugs. I’m also
a big fan of adhesive vinyl, upcycling
furniture and layering up textures with
boho cushions and throws. Lots of plants
bring the place to life as well!

However, it started to feel a bit oppressive and clashed with the fireplace. After living with it for
a year, I went for more neutral tones. We picked Intense Taupe on the walls and Dusky Petal on
the ceiling, both by Wilko. It’s a great backdrop for my artwork from Suzy Broome, Jan Skacelik
and Sian Jordan. I’d like a proper fireplace, but we’ve made the most of this one by painting the
surround, adding vinyl tile stickers and fitting a Dimplex electric fire to create a focal point.’

As her home is rented, Anna hasn’t been able to change the kitchen
units. However, she’s put her own stamp on the room with paint and
artwork. ‘There was a dark and dingy aubergine colour on the chimney
breast before, and the rest of the room was yellow,’ she says. ‘We opted
for a fresh green colour – Whispering Sage by Wilko – changed the light
shades and added terrazzo-effect vinyl to the island for a new look.’
If she owned the house, Anna admits she’d probably remove the island
and replace it with a table, which would be more comfortable to sit at.
‘I’d also take all the top cupboards off and have open shelves,’ she says.

wallpaper are ideal for rentals as they
are easy to remove. Another option is
to cut large MDF panels, wallpaper
them and lean them inside alcoves or
against the wall at regular intervals.
Dunelm’s wooden panel natural

work well for this.

Hang artwork using Command

adhesive strips or picture rail hooks to
avoid damaging the walls. Alternatively,
prop them on shelves and furniture or
lean larger pieces on the floor.

A large pegboard offers great

versatility as it can be leaned against
the wall to hang accessories and
plants and has scope to add small
shelves. Open shelves can also work
well as an extra ‘wall’ for display. Try

I change my look quite a lot, but it always

to panelling for many years. I do add in
tiny pops of pastel colour along with
the off-whites and greys, but I like classic
design and an uncluttered feel.

Diig room
‘This was the first section in the space that I panelled,
and it was quite unusual to be doing that back in
2008. But I worked out how to do it and made friends
with the local timber merchant, who is amazing and
will cut all the pieces to size, and even deliver them
to me! Since then, the room has gone through quite
a few looks, but the panelling has remained. We like
to eat round the table and having alternate black and
white chairs has personalised the space. The alcoves
either side of the old chimney are really useful spaces
for storage, and I made my own unit out of a white
IKEA Billy bookcase and some baskets. I covered the
shelves in oak-effect stick-on film and found some
cheap baskets, and all for under £100!’

Living room
‘Because the living room is open-plan to the kitchen
and dining space, I was very conscious that the
whole scheme needed to flow. There was an original
wood-burner there, which needed replacing, and we
put in a more modern one. I’d already tried my hand
at panelling in the dining room first, so I was getting
much better at it by this point and have panelled two
big sections. I deliberately chose a sofa which would
fit snugly into the partition space and not stick out
past the wall, while wood-effect blinds from Dunelm
add an unfussy feel at the window. We also put

How to panel
kitchen units
Give your space a Shaker-style finish
with this DIY upcycle

Check out what sort of primer your kitchen

units need by researching on the internet
and whether it’s possible to paint them.

Thoroughly clean the units first to remove

any specks of dust or grease from the surface.

Unscrew all of the handles and consider

whether the handles will still go or whether a
different design would be more appropriate.

Decide how wide you would like the strips

of MDF around the edges of the units to be
and then take very precise measurements of
how long and how many strips you need.

Take your measurements to a local timber

merchant and have all the pieces cut to size
and ask advice on the best glue to fix them
securely in place.

Once all the strips have been attached and

dried, only then use the primer over the
whole surface and finally put on the topcoat
and reattach handles.

INSTRUCTIONS
1 Take the large hoop and
secure a few pieces of foliage to
one side. We used eucalyptus. If
your foliage isn’t wire-stemmed,
use floristry wire to hold it
securely in place.

2 Attach three sprigs of

gypsophila, also known as

foliage using the same method.
Now add three large flowers to
the hoop. Odd numbers look
more appealing, so if you have
smaller blooms go for five or
seven flowers, and so on.

3 Use a glue gun to affix

wooden letters to the centre of
your length of ribbon, spelling
out a name or word of your

ribbon around the hoop, just
above the centre point, and
secure each side using the

WHERE I LIVE
My home is a one-bedroom flat in
Bromley, Greater London. I live above a
shop on the top floor with my dog, Dolly.
I moved here in August 2021.

WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE

The layout was fine and liveable, but
the entire flat was beige and dull and
screaming out for a makeover. I wanted
to bring my love of retro style to the
place to make it feel more 'me.'

HOW I MADE IT MY OWN

I absolutely love vibrant colours and
patterns and instantly knew wallpaper
prints, paint and bright accessories
would add personality and bring life into
my home. Filling the space with second-
hand finds has been a quick and easy
way to bring character to the space.

MY FAVOURITE PART
I thought I was stuck with the boring
beige kitchen as I didn't have a big
budget to work with. I’m delighted with
the retro look achieved by replacing the
cupboard doors and worktop – it looks
like a brand-new kitchen!

My story I decorated my childhood bedroom with an Orla Nothing beats living

Living room
The space is smaller than Emily’s last living room, and a different
shape, so it took a while for her to get the layout right with her
existing furniture. ‘I kept switching things around but once I’d
decided to put my sideboard against the longest wall, everything
else fell into place. To avoid crowding the room, I’ve had to
store some smaller pieces in the loft for now. The pink sofa and
yellow chair came with me and were a great find at DFS because
they were the right budget and style. I’ve gone for a deliberate
mismatch in this room and picked out the colours from the
Orla Kiely Pulse Yellow rug in the accessories.’

Kitchen
Emily’s kitchen was her biggest makeover
project where her handy dad replaced the
oven and gas hob with white appliances,
tiled the splashback and changed the
beige laminate to a white worktop. ‘The
kitchen wasn’t that old and didn’t need
replacing, plus I didn’t have the budget,
so I needed another solution,’ says Emily.
‘My brother had recently replaced his
cupboard doors and recommended
a company called Homestyle who
sell custom-made kitchen doors and
accessories. I found they had the exact
teak look I wanted. They offer a made-to-

is they sell matching sheet vinyl, so I was ‘I was in love with a picture of an

How to work
with wallpaper
Follow these tips to nail a gorgeous
scheme of colour and pattern
If you’re inspired by 1960s and 1970s designs, like
Emily, but don’t want to turn your home into a
museum, pick a retro-inspired brand like Orla Kiely or
Scion Living. Lust Home also sell a fun retro wallpaper
collection. Another way to keep vintage prints fresh is
to go for modern colours, like pinks and blues.

Avoid crowding small spaces, or making a room feel

too busy, by papering two opposite walls. If you still
feel hesitant, put large wallpaper samples into frames
and hang as art.

To make patterned wallpaper the main talking point,

leave surrounding walls white. Emily stepped this up a
gear in the living room with a cheap white wallpaper
embossed with squares to add texture, subtle interest,
and hide uneven surfaces. The style is a throwback to
her nan’s house when she was a child.

Fitting a picture rail around the room and painting

the wall and ceiling above in white is also a good way
to balance the vibrancy of wallpaper. At the same time,
you’ll save money, as you won’t need as many rolls.

Do your research on Instagram and Pinterest and,

if you can, find a picture you can recreate so you’re
assured the wallpaper pattern complements the
rest of your scheme.

‘Wallpaper was an important part of the look,

and I wanted a busy floral that felt very Seventies,’
says Emily, who went for Duro’s Påsklilja wallpaper
from Wallpassion. The white laminate worktop,
oven and hob are from IKEA

‘I’ve got plans to

decorate the hallway
with a funky wallpaper
or carpet,’ says Emily

Hallway
‘After a decorating disaster, I got a bit nervous
and went back to plain white walls in the hallway,’
says Emily. ‘To make the space more homely, I
added wicker shelves, which I found on Facebook
Marketplace. I display plants and retro ornaments
here and I enjoy changing them up a bit to keep it
interesting. I want to bring even more colour to
this space, but it works for now.’

Bathroom
Emily wanted to rip out the boring beige bathroom
and start again but she didn’t have the budget.
She was wary of using wallpaper in the windowless
room but desperately wanted to bring in pattern.
‘I didn’t know anything about vinyl and happened
to start following Faye Jennifer Vinyl Design on
Instagram and realised this could be an easy,
effective solution. I took a swatch of the vinyl to
B&Q, and they colour-matched the wall paint to the
green in the floral pattern. This project has been my
biggest success. No plumbing, no tiling, just a cheap
and cheerful way to inject personality.’

Graphic wall art

Not ready to commit to retro wallpaper but, like Emily, still love those Seventies vibes?
Get creative with this bold and bright print that's sure to make a statement

Pick your paint colours to suit your décor.

You could make a set of three artworks,

paintbrush picture frame to
fit your finished artwork

INSTRUCTIONS
1 With your paper placed
portrait, draw a large square
in light pencil at the bottom
of the sheet. To determine the
size, measure 2.5cm in from
the left and the right, connect
these points and use this as
the length of each side of the
square. Begin the square 2.5cm
up from the bottom of the
paper. This is your guide.

2 Choose a round object

that you can fit into your
square four times with a little
overlap to form the abstract
flower shape. Draw around
your object lightly in pencil,
ensuring that each circle
overlaps to form the shape.
Rub out the pencil lines

SHELF LIFE
Having purchased my first home as a solo
buyer at 24 years old, I was eager to come up
with ways to make my home look unique and
welcoming on a budget. I have a minimalist
theme through the house and decided that
shelves above the stairs would be a great
addition, to bring a bit of life into what was
previously a boring area! Keeping to the
minimalist theme, I added lots of black and
neutral coloured decor, finished off with a pop
of colour on the gold photo frames to bring
the photographs to life. @birchhomekendal

this hotel was designed in the 1940s but still feels fresh today.
Steal the look with tropical prints in pastel, ice-cream shades.

HOT LINES
Striking, graphic stripes provide a sharp contrast to the soft
colours of this scheme. Paint them with a steady hand, get out
the masking tape or, just pick up striped wallpaper and fabric.
05
FEATHER YOUR NEST
Bright pink flamingos are the perfect motif to add a bit of fun
to this scheme. These elegant birds are playfully kitsch, but their
colour makes them easy to place alongside the rest of the look.

DARK GLAMOUR
Begin your scheme by choosing a selection of prints for
your walls and curtains. Look for big, round florals on a dark
background with a slightly muted, grey effect.

DEFINING FEATURES
Period detailing will create a grand and stately feeling in even
the freshest of new builds. Add coving to your ceilings, stick on
ceiling roses and put up panelling to create a classic look.
05
GO BIG AND GO HOME
Be bold in your furniture choices, and choose the largest pieces
you can fit into your space. It might seem counterintuitive, but

woven baskets made from water hyacinth, seagrass and rattan,
chalky painted accessories and plaited cotton rag rugs. If you still

Q What flooring will make

a room look bigger?

A
There are a few tricks you can do with flooring to
make the most of a small space. Look for lighter
coloured flooring – think cream carpets, light
natural tones and whitewashed wood-effect
flooring. The light and neutral colours will help to open up
the space and give it an airy feel.
Eline Belo, design manager at Moduleo, shares her
expert advice: ‘When it comes to installation, ensure
that the planks run parallel with the longest side of your
room. This will help draw the eye and create the illusion of
lengthening the space. If you’re updating several rooms
at once, choose the same floor throughout to allow for
consistency and an open-plan aesthetic.’ Installing large

format tiles or wider planks, keeping the floor fuss-free

and reducing the amount of join lines will also help to
encourage a spacious feel.

Q What flooring adds

the most value?
Ocean Luxe Collection Canyon
Natural laminate, from £22.99
per sq m, BerryAlloc

A
Solid wood flooring can add the most value
to your home – its natural appeal and
durability means it can stand the test of
time both practically and when it comes
to your interior style. ‘Wooden flooring also provides
other advantages,’ explains Darwyn Ker, managing
director of Woodpecker Flooring. ‘It offers excellent
insulation properties and is also hypoallergenic, as
it does not harbour dust mites, pet dander or other
allergens, promoting better indoor air quality.’
If your budget doesn’t stretch to solid wood,
consider engineered wood flooring or luxury vinyl
tiles which are great alternatives, providing the look
of the real thing at a purse-friendly price. These
solutions can also be used in bathrooms, unlike
solid wood, without fear of water damage.

Q What’s the most timeless

style of flooring?

A
Classic finishes such as marble, natural stone and
wood boast a timeless appeal that make them a great
investment. Wooden flooring is available in finishes
from oak and maple to walnut and mahogany,
which makes it extremely versatile. Plus, it’s not just the finish
that can enhance its allure. ‘Herringbone and chevron patterns
remain popular flooring options. They work well in large or
small spaces and add an effortlessly timeless appeal that works
beautifully with classic and contemporary schemes,’ says
Louise de Hertogh, PR & content co-ordinator at Quick-Step.
Marble and natural stone have an elegant finish to elevate
your space that has spanned the decades. These are often
accompanied by a less appealing price tag and require special
maintenance, too, so cheat the look with more affordable Alpha vinyl tiles in
imitations. Luxury vinyl tiles, laminates and porcelain tiles offer Coral Rock, from £43.49
great look-alikes that give that timeless appeal whatever your per sq m, Quick-Step

Q How can you make budget
flooring look luxury?

A
There are a few ways you can elevate your budget
flooring. First, consider getting creative with the laying
pattern. LVT, laminate, tiles and wooden flooring
can all be laid to create an eye-catching effect, from
parquet to French weave, herringbone or chevron.
If you’re looking to disguise your flooring completely, another
option is to paint it. Using stencils and a whole spectrum of
colours can give your flooring a bespoke feel. ‘Choose richer
shades or patterned designs to achieve a more luxurious feel
for your room – they help create a sense of drama and inject
personality into a scheme,’ explains Jemma Dayman, hard
flooring buyer at Carpetright. ‘An inexpensive way to elevate the
look of your flooring is by layering rugs. Introducing texture,
colour and pattern really help to realise a luxe feel.’

5 of the best ceramic and porcelain tiles

Q How are porcelain tiles

different to ceramic?

A
Porcelain and ceramic tiles are both great
options when it comes to flooring, but there
are differences that may make you choose one
over the other. ‘Generally speaking, porcelain
tiles are hardier and more durable than ceramic tiles. They
have a higher slip resistance and work especially well with
underfloor heating,’ says Harriet Goodacre, tile consultant
at Topps Tiles. In busy areas, such as the hallway or kitchen,
porcelain is a better choice as it’s tough and can take the
weight of more heavy-duty furniture better.
Porcelain also requires less maintenance, with some
ceramic styles needing to be resealed to keep them in top

condition. When it comes to cost, ceramic is usually the
ceramic tile, £66.75

more affordable option, for both the tile and installation
costs; as porcelain is heavier, it’s likely to take longer to lay,
adding to its price tag.

Q Which type of carpet

is best for each room?
Malabar two fold carpet
in Husk, from £35 per
sq m, Cormar Carpets

A
‘When deciding on the best carpet for each room,
there are three important things to consider –
comfort, style and durability. Keeping your room’s
function in mind is essential when choosing
carpet, especially if it’s used by all the family,’ explains
Cormar Carpet’s interior stylist, Jess Contomichalos.
Living rooms can be busy areas, so the carpet needs to be
practical, durable and soft underfoot. Look for man-made
fibres, such as polypropylene in a twist or Berber style, or
opt for a luxurious Saxony carpet for a more indulgent feel.
Get that sumptuous feel in the bedroom by choosing a
carpet with a deep pile and dense fibres – Saxony or velvet
finishes are a perfect choice. The hallway, stairs and landing
need a hardwearing and durable flooring, so opt for a loop
pile in a patterned finish to disguise any dirt or debris.

I’m a writer, singer, actor and also

W
e immediately loved the
overall vibe of this house.
The first time we looked
around, we knew it was
‘The One’ and could feel it had a really happy
energy. It needed quite a bit of work, but we were
fully prepared and couldn’t wait to get started.
We both love to cook so it was important
that the new-look kitchen was a practical
space. We completely reconfigured the layout
and put in a breakfast bar to make it more
sociable. This meant moving the gas supply for
the hob to the opposite side of the kitchen and
we also had to rewire the electrics. To achieve
the layout we wanted, we had to relocate the
soil pipe and then the walls were reskimmed
ready for the units.
I’m a big colour fan and know how it can
transform a room and also your mood. I fell in
love with the green units as soon as the kitchen
consultant showed us the colour range. I love
the shade and it really fills the kitchen with joy.
I chose brushed brass handles for the doors and
brass sockets to bring warmth into the room.
The work took about three months and
although we were thoroughly bored of
microwave meals by the end of it all, it was
totally worth it. It’s exactly what we wanted.

Style advice
Three simple tricks
to try in your own home
03
01 Practical yet pretty
Remember to factor radiators into your overall
scheme. If the ones you have are looking a
bit grim, give them a new lease of life with a
splash of vibrant-coloured paint. Or, if you’re
buying new, ask to see the coloured range –
it could really liven up a plain wall! Danii went
bold and bright with her yellow design from
Column Rads, continuing the sunny shade in
the rest of the room with yellow accessories.

02 Make use of dead space

Take advantage of those difficult-to-reach
corners with a pull-out carousel unit, like Danii,
so you can easily see and reach everything
you need. These corner shelves have side rails
to stop your pots and pans from falling out,
making those day-to-day tasks that little bit
easier and fuss-free.

I wanted the kitchen 03 Hot tea on tap

I love the radiator cover we revamped with paint
How I made it work
To keep costs down, I thought carefully about
and a new French cane panel. It was a satisfying
job stapling it to the frame when wet and seeing
what things we could keep and revamp, as well how great it looked when it dried.
T
he size of the bathroom really appealed when we first
viewed this house, and I loved the roll-top bath by the
window. Although the pale blue colour on the walls and
panelling wasn’t really me (I’m more of a green person),
I felt I could live with it while we prioritised painting the living room
and main bedroom. When the shower started leaking into the living
room below, we decided to get a new cubicle and embark on a mini
bathroom makeover.
The biggest change was removing the old shower, tray, screen,
partition wall and grey tiles before installing a new Crittall-style design.
Then we tackled the dated built-in storage. This involved taking doors
off an impractical high cupboard over the bath and turning it into a
faux plant wall, as well as swapping a bulky base cupboard for a slim
console table. A £10 mirrored wall cabinet, which I upcycled, has also
solved the problem of no storage or mirror above the sink. Having
the cast-iron bath re-enamelled by a specialist company was another
way to reuse what was already there. The final piece of the jigsaw was
laying vinyl flooring over the old tiles and adding new artwork with
terracotta accents to tie in with the scheme.
We did make a few mistakes along the way though. At first, I
painted the woodwork teal and the walls white, but Warren said it
looked too bright. He suggested a deep navy, but we compromised
with an off-black, which looks a bit more grown-up and classic. I also
bought cheap black plastic frames for the artwork but soon realised I
needed to up my frame game and invested in better quality oak ones.
Even though we kept the old basin, toilet and bath, the changes make
it feel like a completely new bathroom.
‘We took the doors off this cabinet and sawed off
the detailing in the middle,’ says Karen. ‘After painting

Karen. ‘Having it re-enamelled

it looks like a new bath’

Style advice Three simple tricks

to try in your own home

01 Update existing pieces

‘The original radiator cover had fretwork in the
middle with Gothic arches but the frame was
decent so I knew it could be easily transformed,’ says
Karen. ‘I’ve always loved French cane as it has that
holiday vibe and I wanted to break up the dark wall
with a lighter tone. We ordered it online from Cane
Store, who advised on sizing and sent easy-to-follow
instructions. It’s also nice to have another surface for
displaying accessories.’

02 Re-think your storage

‘Although the room is quite large, it’s narrow in the
middle due to a chimney breast. ‘Previously, there
was a fitted base unit that jutted out too far into the
room and made the space feel narrow,’ says Karen. ‘It
had two doors and shelves, which made accessing
toiletries in boxes awkward. This slimmer console
table works much better. The rattan drawer fronts
tie in with the radiator cover opposite and the light
wood contrasts against the dark panelling. Make-up
and toiletries are easily accessible, with a drawer
each for everyday things, and there’s space beneath
for baskets where we can keep items used less often.’

03 03 Lay vinyl flooring

‘Although I didn’t mind the previous floor tiles, I
felt sheet vinyl flooring would pull our new look
together better and be warmer underfoot,’ says
Karen. ‘There was also a gap in the floor as the new
shower tray was slightly smaller than the old one,
so it made sense to have the old tiles screeded
over to make the floor level. After shopping around
and getting lots of samples, I found the perfect
monochrome design online. It only cost around
£150 and is easy to maintain with a steam cleaner.’

Better still, if you open windows at night and then close through the
day, you’ll trap the cooler air in to let it circulate without escaping.
Keep curtains, blinds and windows shut when the sun is shining

suggest opening windows on the side of the house that’s shaded, to
avoid sunlight and hot air getting in.

opting for lightweight wool bedding can be a game-changer. Wool’s natural properties make it an excellent choice
for temperature regulation during sleep. The breathability of wool allows air to circulate, preventing heat build-up
and promoting a cooler sleep environment. Additionally, wool has moisture-wicking properties, which absorb and
evaporate sweat, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout the night.
We conducted some research with Leeds University which scientifically proved that wool transports moisture 43%
more effectively than polyester, and 67% more than feather/down and cotton over an eight-hour period, giving you a

ideal choice for those seeking a restful night’s sleep amidst the sweltering heat.

2 Lift the chicken pieces onto a plate. Pour off half of
the cooking liquid, then add the honey and pistachios

a large baking tray with baking paper. Put one sheet of

Add a third of the chicken mixture in a line along one
long edge, then roll up into a cylinder, brushing the filo
with butter as you roll.

place on the baking sheet. Repeat twice more in
the same way, coiling each filo cylinder around the
