A friend of yours recently gave you a nice birthday present.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter,
– thank her for the present and say why you particularly like it
– describe some other presents that you received
– explain some of the things you did on your birthday.

Dear Sarah,
Now that the weekend of my birthday party is over and you have hopefully arrived
home safely, I just wanted to let you know again how much your birthday present
means to me.
I don’t think I’ve ever received something quite as original as this lovely, hand-made
photo album with photos and notes reminding me of our childhood. I think that
these memories have helped us stick together and I hope that, although we live a
long way apart now, I can add to this album every year when we see each other.
With the stationery collection that my mother gave me and the calligraphy set I got
from my dad, I can easily continue to add to this work of art!
It’s sad that you could only be there for the party and not for my actual birthday. I
went canoeing with my parents and my sister at Barley Creek, the lovely lake resort
that we often used to go to when we were young. Do you remember the tall trees
and the calm atmosphere there? Well, everything is still as it used to be. Even the
castle restaurant is still there, where I topped the day off with a fancy dinner. What
a memorable day it was!
I hope you can be there next time.
Lots of love,
Amanda

A colleague lent you a book that helped you to prepare for a presentation at work.
Write an email to your colleague thanking him/her. In the email,
• thank your colleague for lending you the book
• explain how the book helped you
• tell him/her how the presentation went

Dear Jerry,
I hope that you're in good health and spirit. I just wanted to tell you that I can’t
thank you enough for lending me that book to prepare for my presentation, at a
time when I thought that I would probably never be able to finish the presentation
on time.
If you are wondering how the book helped me, it didn’t only help me in organizing
my thoughts on a rather critical subject like “the challenges of a small company in
using cutting-edge technologies” and deliver it like a “pro” but also helped me
immensely in providing me with the data to support my thoughts, at the end.
Besides, the book also provided a great deal of information on how small
companies could benefit from the research and development works of large
companies – a prospect that our company is currently thinking to explore, in order
to save some cost, by forging a partnership with them.
In the end, I must say that my presentation was lauded by everybody who were
present there till the end. Some of them even asked me questions to learn more
about the subject. So, again, thank you!
Yours sincerely,
Jack

You went to another city for a training course and stayed at a friend's house for a
week. They have been great hosts.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter,
• thank them for having you at their house for a week
• express your gratitude for their hospitality
• say how much you miss them

Dear Robert,
Hope all is well at your end. I'm also carrying on well with my life and works.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how grateful and thankful I really am for
allowing me to stay at your house for the whole week in order to help me attend
the training course in the last month. After all, it would have been really difficult
for me to find another suitable place on such short notice since I was informed
about the training programme only just a few days before the start of the training.
I'm also very much grateful for the kind and generous hospitality that were shown
to me by your entire family. I especially enjoyed my afternoon snack time with your
whole family after returning from my training. Besides, I also liked how you took
me to do fishing at a nearby lake during the weekend while making a video of it. In
fact, during that one week of stay at your place, I very much felt like a part of your
great family, so no wonder that I miss all of you after leaving your city.
Please send my gratitude to everyone in your family.
Warm wishes,
Thomas

One of your friends invited you for a meal with his/her family in their home. You
enjoyed the meal and had been happy to be introduced to his/her family.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter,
• thank your friend and say that you enjoyed the meal
• say what else you liked about this visit
• ask your friend to meet you someday at a restaurant

Dear Fanny,
Hope all is well at your end. I'd like to thank you for the wonderful meal that I
enjoyed at your home with your entire family last week. The food, you served, was
just so great and delicious. In fact, the pizza at your home was the best homemade
pizza I've ever tried!
I also very much enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere at your home and liked the idea
that you introduced your entire family to me one by one right after arriving at your
place. Besides, I enjoyed your family videos from the past, especially, when you
were a little child. On top of that, the location of your home is excellent as it has
plenty of space around it. Finally, the small but very beautifully maintained orchard
garden at the back of your home was breathtaking.
But, anyway, now that you've been kind enough to invite me to your home for a
great meal, I would also like to invite you to a favourite restaurant of mine for some
dinner this coming weekend.
Hope you would come.
Warm wishes,
Miller

You recently enjoyed a meal at a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, and
you were very pleased with the food and service.
Write a letter to the restaurant manager. In your letter,
• give details of your visit to the restaurant
• mention the reason for the celebration
• say what was good about the food and the service

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you to express my satisfaction with the excellent service and high
quality of food that your restaurant provided us last Sunday, on the occasion of my
30th birthday.
We were a party of fifteen, which included my family, close friends and colleagues
from work. Your staff went out of their way to provide seating arrangements that
were easily accessible. The waiters were extremely professional, polite and
obviously experienced as they did not encroach too much on the proceeding.
Your current menu offers plenty of choices, as does your wine list, and everything
was available. We were very pleased with the quality and quantity of the dishes
served. I ordered the rack or mutton ribs, which was deliciously succulent and, if
anything, maybe slightly too large! Nevertheless, we managed to finish it. I was
similarly impressed with the variety of local and international wines you served.
The wine that was ordered arrived at the correct temperature that each wine
should be consumed. The waiters were familiar with the etiquette, and the service
was paramount.
All in all, our group enjoyed a delicious meal at your establishment, and I had a very
happy birthday.
Thank you once again.
Yours faithfully,
Denis Brian

Last month you had a holiday overseas where you stayed with some friends. They
have just sent you some photos of your holiday.
Write a letter to your friends. In your letter,
• thank them for the photos and the holiday
• explain why you didn't write earlier
• invite them to come and stay with you

Dear Mark and Lucy,

Hope you're doing great. I had a great time with you guys. Thank you so much both
for the remarkable holiday in your city and for the lovely photos that you sent me
yesterday.
Canada is certainly a spectacular country with an extraordinary landscape, vibrant
culture and wildlife, particularly up in the area where you are. The holiday is over,
but I'll never forget the way you treated me - it was fabulous.
Sorry, it has taken me so long to write back and thank you. Almost as soon as I
landed back in Italy, I got extremely busy with my office work. Besides, a severe
cold forced me to take a few days off from the office, and I struggled to regain
momentum at work and at home.
I would like to invite both of you to visit Italy. We'll be celebrating our parent's 40th
marriage anniversary next month, and I expect you on this special occasion. I'll take
you to some of the famous places in Italy including Rome. Best known for housing
ancient Roman structures and the Vatican City, Rome has stunning cathedrals and
Renaissance architecture. I am sure you'll enjoy your time here.
I would love to see you both soon. Take care and write back.
Warm wishes,
Emily

After being involved in an accident, you were looked after by a person you did not
know before. Write a special thank you letter to express your gratitude.
In your letter:
• introduce yourself and let him/her know why you are writing
• express your appreciation
• and offer him/ her to visit your home with his/her family

Dear George,
You were so kind and Godsend to look after me after I was involved in an accident
last Monday. I am writing to express my immeasurable admiration for your
altruistic and brave action.
I am Simon Annand, a math teacher at the Cherry Blossom high school, and I live
with my family at 24 Abbey Rise Street, London. On my way to the school at around
8.30 am last Monday, my motorbike crashed with a private car near Aberdeen Drive
and I lost control. I was severely injured and could not move or pick up my bike. If
you had not decided to help me, the situation could have been worse.
I am so grateful to you for your kind help and generous words. You even took the
burden to take me to a nearby hospital and that was so noble of you. I cannot
express enough how thankful I am to you. When my parents and wife heard about
how courageously you assisted me, they prayed for you even though they have
never met you before.
I regret that I could not thank you enough. Please accept my invitation to visit our
home at your convenience and allow my family to thank you properly. I have
recovered quickly and the thanks go to you. Please visit us with your family and let
our brief encounter becomes an opportunity to know you more.
Yours truly,
Simon

You and some friends ate a meal at a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion,
and you were very pleased with the food and service.
Write a letter to the restaurant manager. In your letter:
• give details of your visit to the restaurant
• explain the reason for the celebration
• say what was good about the food and the service
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my satisfaction and admiration regarding the outstanding
food and service we have enjoyed in your restaurant, “La-Italiano”, last Sunday.
Thank you for making our event more special.
It was my friend's birthday, so we decided to celebrate it at your restaurant. We
visited your restaurant on 29th July, at around 7.30 pm, due to its convenient
location and a good reputation for delicious food. I am glad that we picked your
place.
Five of us went to your eatery and we enjoyed a traditional Italian cousin for dinner
and a special black forest cake from your restaurant. It really did worth the money
we paid because I suppose you have hired the best chef in the town! The service of
the waiters was also marvellous. They were truly well-mannered, organised and
skilled in serving food. On top of that, the interior design of your place is adequately
stunning.
We also realised how preciously you treat your customers when my friend got a
chocolate box as a birthday gift on behalf of your restaurant. That truly made our
day.
I hope the authorities of your restaurant will always ensure this excellent service
and food to all its guests.
Yours faithfully,
Shadia Rahman

You recently visited a tourist attraction and you were very pleased with the help
given to you by the staff.
Write a letter to the head of staff at the tourist attraction. In your letter:
• give details of the circumstances of your visit
• describe the help given to you by the staff
• say what you want the head staff to do

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Pham Van Duc, a tourist from Vietnam, recently been to your Illusion 3D Art
Museum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and had been overwhelmed both with the
collection and courteous staff. I am writing to express my appreciation for the
wonderful experience that I had during my visit to your Museum.
I took a week-long vacation to Kuala Lumpur with my wife and daughter in August
and learned about your Museum from TripAdvisor, a useful website for tourists.
After we reached your Museum, the receptionist explained what we can expect
once inside and what we can do to enjoy our time. She was very friendly and
cooperative. Once we got inside, another staff member greeted us and then
escorted us to different worth enjoying 3D collections. My daughter had thoroughly
enjoyed her time and we took several pictures to capture the moment. He was with
us until the last moment and had been quite cordial.
I would like to thank you for a great museum with a fabulous selection and on top
of that, gracious staff members who have a genuine smile and a positive mentality
to let visitors enjoy their time. Please convey my regards and best wishes to them.
Yours faithfully,
Pham Van Duc

An annual event was recently held in your area. Now you want to write to the
organizers of this event congratulating them on a successful production.
Write a letter to the organizers. In your letter,
• give details of the event
• mention what you liked the most about the event
• make a polite criticism of something you thought could be improved

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Elizabeth Conor, a local resident of Essex, writing to congratulate you for
arranging a successful community meet-up programme this year. Many other
residents whom I have talked to lately, feel the same. Your organisation deserves
applause from all of us.
Tenth March is a special day for the citizens of Essex. This day witnesses the largest
gathering of local residents and the vote to elect some key members of the
community makes it even more significant. Arranging the morning meeting,
administering the successful voting, serving lunch to everyone and then finally
letting members talk about their complaints and express compliments require an
exceptional team of people and their hard work. You made this programme
memorable and meaningful.
I was quite amazed by the introduction of a software-based voting system that was
instantaneous and flawless. Unlike the previous years, we did not have to wait for
hours to learn the result. This was a great addition to the programme.
Having said that, I would recommend some amusement facilities for children and
volunteers to look after them so that parents can participate in the programme
without looking over their shoulder.
Thank you once again for a remarkable programme this year. We will remember
this for many days to come.
Yours faithfully,
Elizabeth Conor
