It was an incredibly hot day, and a lion was feeling very hungry.

He came out of his den and searched here and there. He could find only a
small hare. He caught the rabbit with some hesitation. “This hare can’t fill my
stomach” thought the lion.
As the lion was about to kill the hare, a deer ran that way. He thought;
“Instead of eating this small hare, let me eat the big deer.”

He let the hare go and went behind the deer. But the deer had vanished
into the forest. The lion now felt sorry for letting the hare off.

and climbed up quickly. He didn’t think of Vijay. Vijay had no idea how to climb
the tree.
Vijay thought for a second. He’d heard that animals don’t prefer dead
bodies, so he fell to the ground and held his breath. The bear sniffed him and
thought he was dead. So, it went on its way. Raju asked Vijay, “What did the
bear whisper into your ears?”

Vijay replied, “The bear asked me to keep away from friends like
you” …and went on his way.

Scene: A street in a barrio, somewhere in

Luzon
Third Scene
Time: Early evening

(The townspeople are gathered about the place. A child is holding up a placard
crudely written: “Meeting tonight – at Aling Rosa’s – 7 P.M – Important.” Some are
sitting on the benches, on the ladder, squatting on the ground. PEPING, standing in
the center, is talking.)
PEPING: - and you have all heard what is going on in Batangas. And late this
afternoon, we got news that there is also a drought in Bulacan and
Pampanga. Luckily, we have been blessed with abundant rain this year.
What about next year? Suppose the rains don’t come. Our only river is
some kilometers away. But we have several springs whose water can
harness and use for our mutual benefit. Whether it rains or not, we’ll have
water to irrigate our fields. I have already explained to you how we plan
to build the irrigation system. But I can’t do the work alone. We must all
work together – every available man and woman in this barrio. For the
irrigation will belong to us – to everyone of you here present.
1ST MAN: Mang Sebio isn’t here! (Mumbling from the crowd.)
PEPING: Yes, we know.
2ND MAN: How much will it cost?

12
3RD MAN: Yes, how much?
PEPING: I have made a rough estimate. We won’t spend anything for the stones.
We can get them form the nearby cave. All we need is the cement.
1ST WOMAN: How much?
PEPING: (After a pause.) About five hundred. (Murmurs the crowd.) It seems a
lot of money, but it really isn’t. The dam will last for years – we won’t
worry about the lack of water – and it will irrigate every hectare in this
barrio.
(There is a momentary pause, as the people discuss the project. Then a man
stands up.)
1ST MAN: I give five pesos.
PEPING: Good for Mang Naldo.
2ND MAN: Here is ten.
PEPING: Angelito, get a basket from Fausta’s store and place it in the center.
(ANGELITO does as he is told.) ToÑing will get down your names and
the amount you have given. (Mang Sebio enters. They all look at him.
But he goes to the store without looking at anyone.)
SEBIO: Tuba. (Sebio drinks it, then spits an inch away from where ELOY is
sitting. ELOY startles, annoyed. Without looking back SEBIO leaves.)
ROSA: I give eighteen.
1ST WOMAN: All my savings – eight-ninety.
(The people put their money in the basket, as TOÑING gets their names. The
crowd is commenting and chatting.)…
PEPING: (To the crowd.) We still lack one hundred and fifty.
FAUSTA: Here’s mine – thirty.
ELOY: (Standing up, not to be outdone.) Twenty from me.
FAUSTA: Ha? Where did you get twenty?
ELOY: I haven’t got it yet, but I’ll have it tomorrow.
FAUSTA: How? By betting in the sabungan?
PEPING: We still need one hundred.
VOICES: How about Mang Sebio? – Yes, what about him – He can afford it.
PEPING: We can’t force anyone to do anything against his will. Mang Sebio
doesn’t believe in our project. But we’ll find the money somehow.
VOICES: He can afford it! – He’s rich!
PEPING: We start working tomorrow. The harvest is over.

13
MR. VELES: Yes, my friends, let’s not waste time in cockfighting – (Here, FAUSTA
glances at ELOY and the other women at their respective husbands) –
let’s use our free time, while waiting for the next planting season – by
planting vegetables.
1ST WOMAN: Rightly said. Our husbands spend their time in gambling.
1ST MAN: And our wives chatting on the streets! (Laughter from the crowd.)
PEPING: Building the irrigation system will take a few weeks of hard work, but
when it’s finished it will be ours. Because we built it with our own
hands. How many can start tomorrow?
(One man raises his hand, then another. Slowly the women prod or pinch
their husbands to do the same. Then almost all hands are raised.)
PEPING: Tomorrow, I’ll catch the first bus and go to Manila. I’ll buy the cement.
PEPING: That is all, and thanks. (The crowd starts to disperse.) Another thing –
(they stop) – our teacher, Mr. Veles, complains that the roof of the
school leaks. Why can’t we help him repair it? Your children study here
– it’s the only school in our barrio, and someday my children – when I
get married – (Laughter from the crowd) will study there, too. After we
finish the dam we can fix that roof. What do you say?
1ST WOMAN: My husband Terong will fix it.
HER HUSBAND: (Caught by surprise.) Ha?
2ND WOMAN: My son Enyong, too.
HER SON: Aba, Inay!
3RD WOMAN: My friend Cardo – he’ll be there.
HER FRIENDS: Hoy, Menang!
MR. VELES: Thank you, everybody. Let me say it again, my friends – plant
camote and mani during months you’re waiting for the planting.
You will not only make extra income but also increase the
fertility of the soil. Your children studying geography will
explain it to you. Ask them.
1ST WOMAN: That’s what I was telling my husband Terong. Plant camote.
HER HUSBAND: Ha?
2ND WOMAN: Enyong, plant tomatoes.
HER SON: Aba, Inay!
3RD WOMAN: Cardo, stop your cara y cruz and plant kangkong
HER FRIEND: Hoy, Menang!
(A man comes in with a newspaper.)

14
MAN: Look what the Manila papers say! Peping is right!
PEPING: What is it?
MAN: Here, you read it.
PEPING: (Reading.) The Manila papers report that an impending drought
is expected to hit Central Luzon this year. Already Tarlac,
Pangasinan, and Zambales have been complaining about the
lack of rain.
(MANG SEBIO enters, quietly. They all look at him)
PEPING: You see, my townspeople? We must stop expecting the government to
do everything for us. If we say we live in a democracy, then we should
remember that living in a democracy gives the individual the right to
depend on himself or herself, whenever possible. No one can force you
to work, but it’s better to work because you like than to be compelled
to do so. Angelito, get a bundle of sticks from the store. (Angelito gets
it.) Look at this bundle of sticks – ten thin pieces of firewood – (he
takes out one) – this single stick I can break easily – (he does so) – but
notice that I can’t break the bundle once tied together again. Together
the bundle is strong – even two men can’t break it – but one single
stick – why, even Angelito here can break it. (Laughter from the crowd.
SEBIO quietly goes to PEPING and gives him something. Then he
leaves as quietly.)
VOICES: His contribution! – How much is it?
PEPING: One hundred. (Claps and cheers from the crowd.)

Did you like the story? Were you able to find the Filipino values cited in the
initial activity? With this, supply the table below the Filipino values from the story.
Justify your answer by writing your explanation about it.

Activity 4: The Speech

Are we for no good or are we bound to make a legacy? Let us read a speech by
Patricia Evangelista as she expressed her wholehearted pride of being a Filipino.

DIRECTIONS: Read the text ‘Blonde and Blue Eyes’ by Patricia Evangelista and
answer the question by supplying the diagram below.

Blonde and Blue Eyes

“A Borderless World”
by Patricia Evangelista

When I was little, I wanted what many Filipino children all over the country
wanted. I wanted to be blond, blue-eyed and white. I thought if I wished hard
enough and was good enough, I´d wake up on Christmas morning with snow
outside my window and freckles across my nose!
More than four centuries under Western domination does that to you. I
have 16 cousins. In a couple of years, there will just be five of us left in the
Philippines; the rest will have gone abroad in search of greener pastures. It´s
not just an anomaly; it´s a trend: the Filipino Diaspora. Today, about 8 million
Filipinos are scattered around the world.
There are those who disapprove of Filipinos who choose to leave. I used
to. Maybe this is a natural reaction of someone who was left behind, smiling for
family pictures that get emptier with each succeeding year. Desertion, I called
it. My country is a land that has perpetually fought for the freedom to be itself.
Our heroes offered their lives in the struggle against the Spanish, the Japanese,
the Americans. To pack up and deny that identity is tantamount to spitting on
that sacrifice.
Or is it? I don´t think so, not anymore. True, there is no denying this
phenomenon, aided by the fact that what was once the other side of the world
is now a 12-hour plane ride away. But this is a borderless world, where no
individual can claim to be purely from where he is now. My mother is of Chinese
descent, my father is a quarter Spanish, and I call myself a pure Filipino -- a
hybrid of sorts resulting from a combination of cultures.

18
Each square mile anywhere in the world is made up of people of different
ethnicities, with national identities and individual personalities. Because of
this, each square mile is already a microcosm of the world. In as much as this
blessed spot that is England is the world, so is my neighborhood back home.
Seen this way, the Filipino Diaspora, or any sort of dispersal of
populations, is not as ominous as so many claim. It must be understood. I come
from a Third World country, one that is still trying mightily to get back on its
feet after many years of dictatorship. But we shall make it, given more time,
especially now, when we have thousands of eager young minds who graduate
from college every year. They have skills. They need jobs. We cannot absorb
them all.
A borderless world presents a bigger opportunity, yet one that is not so
much abandonment but an extension of identity. Even as we take, we give back.
We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who support the U.K.´s National Health
Service. We are the quarter-of-a-million seafarers manning most of the world´s
commercial ships. We are your software engineers in Ireland, your construction
workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America and
your musical artists in London´s West End.
Nationalism isn´t bound by time or place. People from other nations
migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are. British
society is itself an example of a multicultural nation, a melting pot of races,
religions, arts and cultures. We are, indeed, in a borderless world!
Leaving sometimes isn´t a matter of choice. It´s coming back that is. The
hobbits of the Shire traveled all over Middle Earth (in J.R.R. Tolkien´s "The Lord
of the Rings"), but they chose to come home, richer in every sense of the word.
We call people like these "balikbayans," or the returnees -- those who followed
their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good
fortune.
In a few years, I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my
way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn´t preclude the idea of a
home. I´m a Filipino, and I´ll always be one. It isn´t about just geography; it
isn´t about boundaries. It´s about giving back to the country that shaped me.
And that´s going to be more important to me than seeing snow outside
my windows on a bright Christmas morning. "Mabuhay" and thank you.
