TYPES OF FIXTURE TRAPS

P-TRAP
BOTTLE TRAP
DRUM TRAP
INTEGRAL TRAP
Are traps that are built-in onto the plumbing fixture

WATERLESS URINALS WATER CLOSETS

GREASE TRAP
Used in kitchen sinks to ‘trap’ grease.

Yellow = grease/oil
Blue = wastewater
Siphonage
TRAP SEAL LOSS
It is a phenomenon in
plumbing wherein a TRAP
fixture trap loses its
water seal.
SEAL
LOSS
SIPHONAGE
Loss of water seal due to negative pressure in the pipes
BACK PRESSURE

Displacement of water seal

due to positive pressure in the
pipes and absence of air
flow.
EVAPORATION

Loss of water seal due to

absence of drainage flow for
a long period of time.
CAPILLARY ACTION

Capillarity is an ability of
water to flow through a thin
medium even going against
gravity
DISPLACEMENT

Loss of water seal caused by

the momentum observed when
pouring a liquid rapidly.

METHODS OF VENTING THE DWV SYSTEM

MAIN STACK VENT

The portion of the soil stack

above the highest installed
fixture branch extending
through the roof
MAIN VENT STACK
Main Stack Vent

Main Vent Stack

Main Vent Stack

The principal vent stack to

which vent branches may be
connected. It serves as a
collecting vent line
INDIVIDUAL VENT
Vent pipes serving a single fixture trap.
UNIT VENT
Vent pipes serving fixtures that are back-to-back
CIRCUIT VENT

Ventilates the soil/waste

branch in which multiple
fixtures are connected to.
RELIEF VENT
Additional vent pipes that help other venting methods
YOKE VENT

Yoke vents are relief vents

installed at fixed intervals on
the soil stack of tall building
WET VENT

The only vent pipe or venting

method that permits the flow of
water. Typically installed in
lavatories on two consecutive
floors.
LOOPED VENT
Method of ventilation for fixtures located in the center of a room
LOCAL VENT

A pipe used to convey foul

odors from a fixture or room. It
has no connection with the
drainage piping system
UTILITY VENT

Used in basements or
underground public restrooms
wherein a vent stack is not
possible to extend above
