CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

Schools are charged with the responsibility of preparing young people to become

productive citizens , capable of making a worthwhile contribution to society. Inherent in

this responsibility is the necessity to adequately engage students in their learning and

personal development so that this goal can be realized. For decades now, it has been

realized how crucial a role “interest” plays in the learning process . (Hidi and

Renninger,2006) as cited in (Subramaniam, 2009, p.10) Stated that “The level of a

person’s interest has repeatedly been found to be a powerful influence on learning.”

They believe that interest influences an individual’s attention, goals , as well as Levels

of learning, while (Schraw and Lehman,2001) are of the opinion that it determines in

part what we choose to learn, and how well we learn this information it is clear

Education plays a important role in shaping the future of individuals and societies.

However, despite its significance, a growing concern persists regarding students' lack of

enthusiasm and disinterest in attending school. This issue not only hinders students'

academic progress but also jeopardizes their development and well-being.

Understanding the underlying reasons and factors influencing students' disinterest in

school is crucial for devising effective interventions and promoting a positive learning

environment. According to (thestemkids.co,2022) these are some of the reasons why

students are not interested in going to school: Classroom and household pressure,

Information overload, They struggle academically, Unhealthy social interactions, Lack of

5
interest in subjects discussed, Bullying in school, Failure to achieve specific goals, The

learning method does not suit them and Boredom. These factors can range from

academic-related aspects, such as examination pressure and inadequate teaching

methodologies, to social, psychological, environmental, and family-related elements that

impact students' attitudes and perceptions of the educational environment.

Academic-related factors play a significant role in shaping students' engagement and

enthusiasm for school. The pressure and stress associated with examinations, coupled

with uninspiring teaching methods, can contribute to disengagement and a lack of

motivation.

Social and interpersonal dynamics within the school environment also play a crucial role

in shaping students' attitudes towards attending school. Instances of bullying, social

exclusion, and unsatisfactory peer relationships can have a profound impact on

students' sense of belonging and willingness to engage in educational activities.

Similarly, the quality of teacher-student relationships, characterized by support,

encouragement, and positive interactions, can greatly influence students' attitudes

towards attending school.

Environmental factors, including the physical infrastructure and facilities provided by

schools, can significantly impact students' perceptions of their learning environment.

Inadequate safety measures, limited access to extracurricular activities, and

unappealing learning spaces can contribute to a lack of interest and disengagement

among students.

6
Psychological and emotional factors, such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and a general

lack of motivation, can further contribute to students' disinterest in attending school.

These factors may arise from a variety of sources, including academic pressures, social

challenges, or personal circumstances, and can profoundly impact students' overall

well-being and academic performance.

Moreover, family and socioeconomic factors can significantly influence students'

attitudes towards school. Lack of parental involvement, economic hardships, and

conflicting priorities can create barriers to students' engagement and active participation

in the educational process.

This research aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing

Grade -7 Zamora students' disinterest in attending school. By exploring these factors

from academic, social, environmental, psychological, and family-related aspects, this

study seeks to provide valuable insights for the adviser and other educators,

policymakers, and other stakeholders. The findings of this research will contribute to the

development of targeted interventions and strategies to address the identified factors

and promote a positive and engaging school environment that nurtures students'

enthusiasm for learning.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Self-Determination Theory: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) proposes that individuals

have innate psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Whenthese needs are satisfied, individuals are more likely to be intrinsically motivated

and engaged in their activities, including school-related tasks. Conversely, when these

needs are thwarted, individuals may experience a decrease in motivation and

disengagement. SDT suggests that the quality of teacher-student relationships, support

for autonomy, and the provision of meaningful learning experiences can enhance

students’ motivation and interest in attending school.

Expectancy-Value Theory: Expectancy-Value Theory posits that individuals’ motivation

is influenced by their expectations of success and the subjective value they place on a

task or activity. In the context of attending school, students’ beliefs about their academic

abilities and the perceived relevance and importance of education can impact their

motivation to engage in school-related activities. Students who perceive themselves as

competent and attribute value to their educational pursuits are more likely to exhibit

interest and active involvement in school.

8
Social Cognitive Theory: Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the reciprocal interactions

between personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior. According to this

theory, students’ attitudes and behaviors are shaped by observing and imitating others,

such as teachers, peers, and family members. Students’ disinterest in attending school

can be influenced by social modeling, where negative attitudes towards school are

observed and replicated. Conversely, positive role models, supportive social

environments, and opportunities for observational learning can foster students

engagement and interest in school.

Ecological Systems Theory: Ecological Systems Theory recognizes the multiple nested

levels of influence on individuals, including the microsystem (immediate environment),

mesosystem (interactions between microsystems), exosystem (indirect influences), and

macrosystem (cultural and societal values). Students’ disinterest in attending school can

be influenced by factors at each level, such as classroom dynamics, peer relationships.

Family dynamics, community resources, and societal expectations. This theory

highlights the interconnectedness and interplay between various factors that shape

students’ attitudes towards school.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs proposes a hierarchical

structure of human needs, ranging from basic physiological needs to higher-order

psychological needs, such as self-esteem and self-actualization. Students’ disinterest in

attending school can arise when their fundamental needs, such as safety,

9
belongingness, and esteem, are not adequately met. Addressing these underlying

needs is crucial for creating a conducive environment that fosters students’ motivation

and engagement in school.

By drawing upon these theoretical perspectives, this study seeks to analyze and

understand the multifaceted factors influencing students’ disinterest in attending school.

The integration of these theories provides a comprehensive framework to explore the

academic, social, environmental, psychological, and family-related dimensions that

contribute to students’ lack of enthusiasm for school. Ultimately, this research aims to

inform the development of effective interventions and strategies to promote a positive

and engaging learning environment, thereby fostering students’ motivation and

enthusiasm for attending school.

10
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The disinterest and lack of enthusiasm exhibited by students towards attending school

have become a growing concem in education. This issue not only hinders students’

academic progress but also jeopardizes their development and overall well-being.

Despite the significance of education in shaping the future of individuals and societies, it

is crucial to understand the underlying reasons and factors influencing students

disinterest in order to devise effective interventions and promote a positive learning

environment.

The problem addressed by this research is the lack of comprehensive analysis of the

multifaceted factors influencing students’ disinterest in attending school. While various

factors have been identified, such as academic-related aspects, social

dynamics, environmental conditions, psychological and emotional factors, as well as

family and socioeconomic influences, there is a need for a holistic understanding of their

interconnections and impacts,

11
This research aims to explore and analyze the diverse dimensions that contribute to

students’ lack of enthusiasm for attending school. By investigating the academic, social,

environmental, psychological, and family-related factors, this study seeks to provide

valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The findings of

this research will contribute to the development of targeted interventions and strategies

to address the identified factors and promote a positive and engaging school

environment that nurtures students’ enthusiasm for learning.

In summary, the problem can be defined as the lack of a comprehensive understanding

of the multifaceted factors influencing students’ disinterest in attending school, which

hinders the development of effective interventions and strategies to promote a positive

learning environment and foster students’ motivation and enthusiasm for school

attendance.
