3 DO_Q4_MIL_G12_MODULE2_LESSON1
Netiquette

Let us first define what etiquette is. When we

refer to someone who has etiquette, it means
that the person has proper decorum and
behaves according to what society dictates to be
right. For instance, a student in a school
assembly has etiquette will behave
appropriately as a sign of good breeding. The
student also displays courtesy and respect,
which shows a good upbringing.
Therefore, netiquette denotes the proper attitude that one should observe when
communicating online. Whether one is talking to someone through a video
conference, instant messaging, e-mail, or chat. Internet users should remain polite
at all times.

Digital Divide

Today, we live in the digital age. Yet there are still parts of the world that have no
access to the internet because it is either in a remote area or experiencing extreme
poverty. Digital Divide refers to the economic, educational, and social inequalities
experienced by those who cannot afford computer and internet access. It refers to
the difference in accessing technology among nations and regions based on
demographic factors like income, race, and age.

The following are common types of digital divide:

• Infrastructure
• Device • Information Security
• Education • Cost
• Defensive Computing • Blocking

Virtual Self

Virtual Self pertains to an individual's representation in the virtual world, which exists
online and is only available once connected to the internet. In a technical word, "virtual
self" can also be the avatar of the person who portrays the virtual user in graphic or
visual terms.

Dangers of the Internet

In these modern times, more and more people are engaged in using social media such
as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They tend to neglect their responsibilities and
more significant needs due to their obsession with these social networking sites. This
habit can result in various consequences like computer addiction and vulnerability to
online crimes.

4 DO_Q4_MIL_G12_MODULE2_LESSON1
Internet and Computer Addiction

Addiction refers to a condition in which a person seems to have lost control over an
action or behavior, which mental health practitioners deemed as self-destructive. For
example, when a person who enjoys playing poker or casino develops an addiction,
he has the urge to do it under all circumstances.

Digital Addiction is the ineptitude to control your hanker using digital-age

technology like computers and smartphones. You can feel perturbation when you are
far from your smartphones. It’s like you cannot live without those gadgets, and they
can sway your daily work or routine in your life. Mostly teenagers and those non-
working people are the ones who are highly affected in this case.

Vulnerability to Online Crimes

With the advent of technology, bullying can now also be done through the internet.
This is also known as cyberbullying. In this act, harm is done when the bully tells
something derogatory about someone and then posts and shares it using social
media.

Cyberbullying is to threaten, harass, sending mean messages, making fun of a

person or to intimidate a person through the use of computers, social media and
smartphones; it is also the act of bullying through the use of internet and social
networking sites with an anonymous person.

area
2. is companionship or association
with one’s fellow
3. is an area of the production,
distribution, and trade

When a photo or video becomes viral, what does this entail? When something
goes viral on social media, it means that internet users have widely and rapidly
shared such photos, videos, or comments on any online platform such as social
media like Facebook or Twitter.

As social media users, we’ve seen a lot of these instances and somehow be a
part of it by sharing or reacting to these posts. We may understand that there could
be a set of opportunities and challenges we can encounter in these scenarios.

According to the Oxford Languages, opportunity defines as a set of situations

that makes it possible to do something. We could find these opportunities from a
vast and complex field of economy, education, society, and politics.
And as we reach these opportunities, it is also vital to recognize the possible
challenges we may encounter. The Cambridge Dictionary defines challenges: as (the
situation of being faced with) something that needs great mental or physical effort to
be done successfully and therefore tests a person's ability. It may be a test, a
problem, or a trial.

12 DO_Q4_MIL_G12_MODULE2_LESSON2
Influence and Power of Media

Anything that goes viral on the internet becomes a trending and a popular topic
in an instant. These are concrete examples of how fast media can influence the
economy, education, society, and politics.

Economy

Economy is an area of the production, distribution and trade, as well as

consumption of goods and services by different agent.

In the past, people had to personally monitor the stock market. But today,
they can monitor their investments in real time by logging in at the website of the
stock exchange. With various social media like Twitter and Facebook, a businessman
can easily receive notifications about local and global news which could affect his
investments. Different media platforms also allows government agencies to improve
their services. With the use of internet, government agencies like the Department of
Tourism (DOT) and Department of Agriculture (DA) can inform the public about their
programs and new policies and announcements. In this way, if a farmer or a
researcher has a concern over an agricultural product, sending inquiries can be done
remotely through e-mail.

Education

Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge,

developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally preparing oneself
intellectually for mature life.

There are different ways on how teachers can use modern technology in
presenting their lessons to students. Gone are the days when they do not have any
other choice but to manually make their visual aids in order to impart knowledge to
their pupils. Before they only use pocket charts chalk and board and manila paper
or educational toys in order for them in conducting their lessons. Now apart from
this there are educational and Digital DVD’s or CD or different education websites
that provide powerful means to educate the students with interactive lessons and
allows them to watch films which cover a variety of topics relevant to their subject
and courses.

Society

A society is a group of individuals or a large social group involved in persistent

social interaction and sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically subject
to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.

Mass media such as print, broadcast, or the internet, have become a powerful
tool in influencing people’s perception of certain things like beauty. Many people tend
to base their perception of beauty on physical looks instead of talent and intrinsic
qualities because of TV commercials and print advertisements. This is the reason
behind the increase in the sales of products and services endorsed by celebrities,
even though it is expensive and quality is not yet proven.

12 DO_Q4_MIL_G12_MODULE2_LESSON2
Therefore, with media being a powerful means to send and receive messages,
the people must be more careful in choosing the kind of media to patronize so that
their values and strand will not be compromised.

Politics

Politics defines as the activities associated with the governance of a country

or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having
or hoping to achieve power.

The power of media and information is strong and wide enough to reach people
from different fields. As information has become easily accessible using the internet,
the profile and other intimate personal details about a public servant or a political
leader can be easily leaked and shared online. While this information can help
citizens assess the kind of leader they should vote for, this can also violate these
politicians' privacy.

Threats and Risk from the abuse and misuse of the Media and
Information

The Article III of the 1987 Philippine Constitution is about the Bill of Rights.
Section 4 states, “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of
expression or the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition
the government for a redress of grievances.” As a democratic country, all citizens are
eligible for freedom of expression, and the state ought to protect that constitutional
right.

We are free to express our ideas and beliefs through writing, speaking, or
demonstrating without any fear of being sued. Despite this, we should never abuse
and misuse our freedom of speech. We also need to consider the rights and feelings
of other people. Thus, freedom of expression does not permit us to hurt others
because that is a violation of their right.
For further details, the following are some laws against the abuse and misuse
of Media and Information which violate the rights of others and threaten them in
some ways.

Libel - In the Philippine Constitution, Libel is a violation of Article 355 of the Revise
Penal Code. As stated in this article, Libel can be committed in writing, printing, and
under similar means. A person commits libel if he publishes in public, either in print
or online, anything that is deemed malicious of “vice or defect, real or imaginary or
any act, omission, condition, status or circumstance tending to cause dishonor,
discredit or contempt of a natural or juridical person or blacken the memory of one
who is dead. In addition, writing should arise from an honest opinion, be free from
malice, and aims to serve public interest.

Slander - According to Article 358 of the Revise Penal Code, Slander refers to a
malicious act of spreading untrue statements about someone or something else, in
a way that is intended to cause harm. Example, calling someone names or saying
derogatory remarks about a person is consider as slanderous.

Anti-Obscenity Law - According to Article 201 of the Revise Penal Code (as amended
by P.D. No. 960) a material would be a violation to the Anti-Obscenity Law if it
includes immoral doctrines, obscene publication or exhibitions and indecent shows.

12 DO_Q4_MIL_G12_MODULE2_LESSON2
Materials that have glorifying criminals or condoning their crimes; promote violence,
lust or pornography, offends a race or religion; promotes the use of drugs; and
encourage acts contrary to law, public orders, morals, good customs, establishes
policies, lawful orders, decrees, and edicts also violate the Anti-Obscenity Law.

Sedition - Sedition pertains to subversive acts, such as a rebellion and insurrection,

which incite people to go against the government and resist its lawful authority and
jurisdiction. According to Article 138 of the Revise Penal Code, any person who is
found to be inciting a rebellion shall be penalized because this will endanger the
security, safety, and stability of the state.

Contempt of Court - As explained in Section 1 Rule 71 of the rules of the court,

Contempt of Court refers to disobedience to the court where a person exhibited acts
of opposing the court’s authority, justice, and dignity.

Piracy - Some people buy pirated copies of albums and films instead of purchasing
the original ones because those are cheaper and more practical for them. However,
piracy is considered illegal under the Philippine Law. Piracy is the unauthorized
distribution and reproduction of a copyrighted materials. It is also a violation of Anti-
Camcording Act of 2010 or Republic Act 10888.

Lesson Implication of Media and Information
4
On the previous lesson, you discovered the impact of Massive Open Online such
as the wearable technology, emerging trends, technological devices, ubiquitous
learning, the massive open online content and the effects of current trends and future
trends on media and information. In this lesson, you will gather the Implications of
Media and Information to the individual, to the society, in the education, and even in
politics.

Media and information literacy (MIL) has become a social necessity owing to the
massive development of modern media resources such as social media, digital
channels, and electronic news sites, which together confront individuals with a vast
amount of information, headlines, new technologies, and different opinions. Making
the next generation aware of how to interact with different forms of media is crucial
because they will convey the news and information they encounter and are often
responsible for producing it. According to reports, almost 300 million new social media
users are added each year, which equates to 550 new users per minute (Schultz,
2019). Therefore, every individual should be responsible in handling it properly to
avoid various negative occurrences that might happen in just one click away.

THE ROLE OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION

TO THE INDIVIDUAL
MIL aims to enable individuals to think critically about the media and the
information they consume by engaging in a process of inquiry. The aim, is to allow
individuals to become engaged citizens and responsible decision-makers (co-
inform.edu).

31 DO_Q4_MIL_G12_MODULE2_LESSON4
IN EDUCATION
The use of media sources help connects learners with events that are culturally
relevant. As a result, a positive consequence of utilizing media is that instructors must
keep their materials and examples up-to-date (serc.carleton.edu). Media literacy helps
students become wiser consumers of media as well as responsible producers of their
own media (ce.fresno.edu).

IN POLITICS
The internet has created channels of communication that play a key role in
circulating news, and social media has the power to change not just the message, but
the dynamics of political corruption, values, and the dynamics of conflict in politics.
Through the use of social media in election processes, global conflict, and extreme
politics, diplomacy around the world has become less private and susceptive to the
public perception (en.wikipedia.org).

IN SOCIETY
In order for development to be just and sustainable, citizens must productively
participate in the decisions that shape their lives. Participation requires an informed
citizenry. A free and independent media supply timely and relevant information to
citizens allowing them to change their own behavior and to demand higher social
standards for society (www.mdif.org).

to the individual, society, in the education, and even in politics. In this lesson, you
will be able to realize the relationship of people and the media.

Aside from becoming an information literate individual, you also need to

understand the similarities and differences of people as a medium for any
information you acquire. So this topic will help you classify those people behind
another medium and how they produce another form of media to convey the
information needed. On the other hand, you will know who those people are who act
as a medium for another person to learn or acquire knowledge, or who simply
consider themselves to be media themselves. Most importantly, this lesson also
provides a different list of fields of people and media that you might consider when
choosing your own career in the near future.
