Lesson: The Seven Wonders of the World

Activity 1: Warm-up

Objective: checking presence and stimulating the students’ imagination

Methods: conversation, brainstorming

Timing: 10 minutes

Procedure:

 Introductory conversation
 The teacher checks absentees and the students answer
 Teacher shows students some images containing The Seven Wonders of the
World. She asks the pupils whether they have ever heard of these before
and if they can think of some reasons for which these places are called
“wonders”. Teacher also asks the students to work in pairs and to think of
as many adjectives as they can in order to describe the word “wonder”.
After that, the teacher draws a spider web on the blackboard and asks the
students to come to the blackboard and write down the adjectives they
found.
 Students watch the images and then answer the teacher’s questions and
tasks.

Activity 3: Crossword

Objective: finding the Seven Wonders of the World

Procedure:
 Teacher gives students sheets of paper containing a crossword and asks
them to find the Seven Wonders of the World within 3 minutes. They have
to work in pairs and to write down in their notebooks the words they find.
 Students solve the given task, take turns and read the words.

While-reading activities

Activity 4: reading

Objective: Matching the pictures with the descriptions

Skill focus: speaking, reading

Methods: discussion

Timing: 8 minutes

Interaction: T-S, pair-work

Procedure:

 Teacher asks students to open their books on page 46. She also asks them
to take turns and read loudly the texts from exercise 1. Teacher teaches the
new vocabulary if necessary. After reading the texts, the teacher asks pupils
to work in pairs and match the information to each picture.
 Students read the text, write the unknown words in their notebooks and
solve the given task.

Activity 5: reading

Objective: reading in order to extract specific information and completing a grid

Skill focus: speaking, reading, writing


Methods: conversation, filling in a grid

Timing: 6 minutes

Procedure:

 Students are asked to read the text again, silently, if necessary and to
complete a grid which the teacher draws on the blackboard. The grid
contains the Seven Wonders of the World and the students have to
complete the name of the countries they belong to.

Activity 7: consolidation

Objective: fixing the information taught

Procedure:

 Teacher explains to pupils that nowadays there have been elected another
seven wonders of the world. She shows them pictures with these places
and, after that, asks the pupils to compare them with the ancient ones and
decide which of them they think are more important or more beautiful.
 Students are also asked to work in groups and to discuss about beautiful
buildings and places in Romania that they have seen or read about and to
decide if they consider them as being “wonders”. They also have to appoint
a representative for each group who has to come to the blackboard and
write down “the wonders” they thought about.
 If time allows, the teacher gives the students a similar crossword puzzle,
this time containing The Seven New Wonders of the World. They have to
circle the words they find.
 Students watch the images, answer the teacher’s questions and solve her
tasks.
