The first issue on our CAP is the problem of staff not filling progress and evaluation properly.

It was
described has not being person centred enough and being task focused. On inspection it had been
noted their care plans had been filled in ahead of time. The paperwork had been falsified by doing
this. The normal way this should be done is at the end of somebody’s shift.

This is having a negative effect on the home and the care of the residents. I will evaluate how the
staff are filling in paperwork and when they are filling it in. This will lead me to be able to assess how
I can change the situation. This will be backed up with observations and policies to show that this is
how it should be done and why they should do it. This will be followed up with paperwork that will
show how staff are changing and how they are being monitored . It will be linked to other aspects of
work which will show an holistic approach to care. I will finally show how good practice leads to
better care which in turn leads to more people coming to the home. This should result in better
profits.

First I will find an example of how the P+E should be filled in. This I will send with an email explaining
why it is important to get paperwork correct and the implications of not doing so. I will also add
minutes of a meeting that includes.

Strategic planning will involve relating my aims with the aims of Barchester. RIPER is the acronym
used to express Barchester Values and it is relevant here.
Responsibility, integrity, passion,Empowerment and respect. The very purpose of documentation has
two purposes. One is to show how the resident was looked after and how they should be looked
after. The second is to show who had responsibility for what they are recording. In the case of the
P+E notes they should be completed by the person who did the task they are writing about. So in
this case by writing it up early they are not taking responsibility for what the resident does later in
the day. Linked to that it shows the staff member is showing integrity about their work and how they
did it. Everything a Barchester employee does should show passion and that that includes the
paperwork. By encouraging them to do things properly we are empowering them to learn and
eventually progress with their jobs. Failure to learn on this subject will be seen as being a barrier to
change not just in terms of moving forward but just to keeping pace where we should be.

I will measure change by doing regular checks on the paperwork to make sure it being done to
Barchester standards. This could done over a period of four weeks and I will review the progress
during this time. I will provide training and will monitor more in the first weeks. If it hasn’t stuck by
the four week period then I will do a consultation to see what is going wrong. Ultimately however
the paperwork needs to be done correctly and the final part of getting this done will be going down
the disciplinary route. This will be made clear from the beginning.

This mentoring will be backed up with paperwork such as supervisions and appraisals. When dealing
with the bigger picture minutes from meetings will be used to back up what is being done or
requested from staff. I think that I have demonstrated that I will use SMART criteria. I have shown
that by giving staff an example of how I want the work done I’m being specific, by reviewing progress
over time and monitoring how they are doing this is measurable. The example will also show that
the end goal is both realistic and achievable. By giving a month’s notice this is being timely. Going
forward it will be important to make sure new staff members are shown the correct way to do things
from the start and to try and make sure they are not influenced by the bad habits of existing
members of staff.

While the aim of the project is to make sure the P+E is done correctly this will also show a range of
different skills such as the ability to learn. The ability to record accurately things they have seen and
done and to show accountability. The project should show progress for the individual and it should
show how I can deal with a someone who is not doing things properly, how I can help them and
how by doing this it will help the organisation. The financial side of things will involve showing how
much it will cost to for me to train people, how much it will cost to get these people on training and
cpiwhat are the financial benefits for helping staff to improve. In terms of leading people it will be
linked to Barchester Values so it will have a big picture approach as well as being person centred to
the residents.

Week 1

I will identify people who need the help.

I have also developed a lesson plan for paperwork in general which I will adapt to be specific to the
P+E.

The first week will be highlighting the risks of not doing the paperwork to the resident but also to
themselves in terms of the legal implications. I will also show how any risks involved in delivering the
training will be far out weighed by the risk of not doing it.

The tools used will be the lesson plan and examples of the paperwork that needs doing.

I will agree the budgets involved with the manager before hand. The benefits financially will be
recorded against the financial cost on a spread sheet which will be backed up with graphs and
tables.

Week 2

I will monitor the budgets and make sure they are being kept. I will deliver relevant reports on this
week by week.

I will begin group supervisions using the teaching template

I will check the P+E everyday to make sure it is being done correctly and explain in detail what had
gone wrong. I will do in depth recaps of what i have taught which will be almost as independent as
the original supervision.

Week 3

I will keep on with the above budget monitoring.

I will begin to focus more on people who might not be understanding what is expected of them at
the same time using the other peoples work as an example of how to do it. That way I will be
showing that it can be done by using their contemporaries work. This will also reward the person
who is doing well.

Week 4

I will round up the budget results to see if it is saving money and where that money could be used.
I will show people how far they have come and will arrange to have regular meet ups to see that
they are carrying on with what they have learnt and not returning to bad habits.
