Early pregnancy; it’s effect on adolescents academic progression

Introduction

“Early pregnancy is not just a health issue, it’s an education crisis. The ripple effect

of an adolescent girl leaving school due to pregnancy can be felt throughout her life,

limiting her future potential and the socio-economic development of her

community.”(marche)

Teenage pregnancy, also known as adolescent pregnancy, is pregnancy in a female

adolescent or young adult under the age of 20. Worldwide, pregnancy complications are

the leading cause of death for women and girls 15 to 19 years old. The definition of

teenage pregnancy includes those who are legally considered adults in their country.

According to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO), approximately 12

million girls aged 15–19 years and at least 777,000 girls under 15 years give birth each

year in developing regions. Imagine the magnitude of dreams and academic opportunities

cut short due to early pregnancy. Academic progression of adolescents is a critical aspect

of their overall development and future prospects. Early pregnancy can disrupt this
progression, leading to lower educational attainment, reduced opportunities, and

increased vulnerability to poverty and social exclusion.

The general objective of causes why early pregnancy happened; Lack of information

about sexual, and reproductive health and rights, inadequate access to services tailored to

young people. Family, community and social pressure to marry sexual violence, early and

forced marriage, lack of education or school drop-out. (Plan International)
