What is it?
Circulates blood and lymph (fluid) through the body (heart, blood vessels, blood,
lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands). The circulatory and respiratory
systems work together to circulate blood and oxygen throughout the body

Circulatory System
Parts/types
○ The circulatory system is made up of three parts:

⇨ The heart
⇨ Blood vessels
⇨ Blood itself

○ Heart keeps all the blood in your circulatory system flowing.

○ Blood travels through a network of blood vessels to everywhere in the body.

○ Types:

⇨ Open Circulatory System: The blood pumped by the heart passes through large vessels into
open spaces or body cavities called sinuses. It is found in arthropods and molluscs.

⇨ Closed Circulatory System: The blood pumped by the heart circulates through a closed
network of blood vessels. It is found in annelids and chordates.
Major/Minor Functions
Major Functions Minor Functions
● Carries oxygen ● Delivers nutrients and
● Carries nutrients hormones to muscles and
● Removes waste products tissues
● Provides oxygen

Relation to other body systems
● The respiratory system works with the circulatory system to supply oxygen
to the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the body. The heart pumps
oxygen-rich blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and releases carbon
dioxide. The oxygen-rich blood is then carried back to the heart to be
pumped to the rest of the body.

● The digestive system works with the circulatory system to transport

nutrients from the digestive tract to the body’s cells. After food is broken
down in the digestive system, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream
and transported to the liver, where they are processed and distributed
throughout the body.

● The nervous system works with the circulatory system to maintain the body’s
balance and respond to changes in the environment. The nervous system
controls the heart rate and blood pressure, which aect the flow of blood
through the body.

● The urinary system works with the circulatory system to filter waste products
from the blood and remove them from the body. Blood flows through the
kidneys, where waste products are filtered out from the urine.
How is it maintained?
● The respiratory system is maintained by homeostasis and gas exchange.

● Homeostasis is maintained by the respiratory system in two ways: gas exchange and regulation of blood pH.

● Gas exchange is performed by the lungs by eliminating carbon dioxide, a waste product given o by cellular
respiration.

● Blood vessels such as arteries, veins, and capillaries can dilate and constrict to help the body maintain
homeostasis.
How can it be negatively affected?
The circulatory system can be negatively aected by various factors, including unhealthy lifestyle
including:

● Smoking
● Alcohol consumption
● Stress

These factors can lead to buildup of plaque in the arteries which can restrict blood flow and increase
the risk of cardiovascular disease such as heart aack and strokes.
What role does it play in fitness
The circulatory system is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to the body’s tissues and
removing waste products such as carbon dioxide. During exercise, the body’s demand for oxygen and
nutrients increases, and the circulatory system responds by increasing blood flow to working
muscles. This allows the muscles to function at a higher level and for longer periods of time.
Fun Facts!
○ The heart is the only muscle that works constantly and only stops after death

○ The heartbeat of a woman is faster than the heartbeat of a man

○ It takes around 23 seconds for the blood to circulate throughout the entire
human body

○ The circulatory systems center (heart) has the power output that goes from 1
to 5 was per minute, which equals to the power output of a 60-wa light bulb.
