9. CAFE MINA
DARK OR SWEET?
The numerous islands in the Visayas have their own micro-climate and topography that
is ideal for both Arabica and Robusta cultivation.
Robusta beans are often used in dark roasted coffee blends because they have a
stronger and more bitter flavor than Arabica beans. However, it's important to note that
not all dark roasted coffee is made with Robusta beans, as Arabica beans can also be
used in dark roasts. The type of bean used in coffee depends on the blend and the
preferences of the roaster.
Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental are part of the Negros Island Region, but still
located in central Visayas. The volcanic soil makes it ideal for coffee cultivation, with a
topography interspersing plains and low mountain ranges at the shoreline and a few
flatlands in the interior. The dormant Mount Kalinis and active Mount Kanlaon are
majestic volcanoes, whose peaks tower over this lush landscape.
This native coffee has its roots way back in history. Negrense would start their mornings
brewing dark roasted native Robusta beans the good old-fashioned way to awaken their
senses and keep them active throughout the day.
