AIRPORT NAME Hubli Airport

CITY, COUNTRY Hubli, Karnataka, India
IATA CODE HBX
ICAO CODE VOHB
Apt Elev 2169ft.

and VOBL-VOHB-VOBM-VOBL (Bangalore-Hubli-Belgaum-Bangalore)

H1.3 Airport Characteristics

(a) Hubli aerodrome is controlled by the AAI. It is approx 5 Km to

the east of Hubli town, which is an important city in North
Karnataka region and known for trade and light engineering
industries.
(b) Topography: The aerodrome is situated amidst undulating
terrain which is characteristic of this region. The area to the E-
NE (about 2 NM) has an isolated hill approx 250 ft high. An
isolated tower of about the same height is also located on the
approach path of R/W 26 at a distance of approx 6 NM. The
area to the west is relatively flat. The runway itself has a
pronounced down slope to the east. A prominent lake is
situated about 1 nm NE of the runway which is a good aid to
visually spot the airfield.
(c) Fire Fighting Facilities: CAT- 4 (being upgraded Cat 6)
(d) Bird Activity: Throughout the year. Pilots to exercise caution.
(e) Fuel: Available. Jet A1.
(f) RWY Lighting: HIRL, SALS (420m) - All Runways.
O
(g) PAPI: PAPI-L (3.0 ) All Runways.
(h) Apron: Suitable for parking five aircraft (Q400 category).

H1.4 Met: The area is strongly influenced by the SW Monsoons. It

experiences severe weather May-Oct with rain, showers, low clouds
and strong/gusting westerly winds. Showers are of passing nature and
typically last for about 10-15 mins. During Oct-Nov, visibility becomes
relatively poor and it becomes difficult to keep the runway in sight if
the sun is low on the horizon. Familiarization with and intelligent use
of leading in features is a great help. Feb, Mar and Apr months are hot
and winds are gusty and variable.

ATCs co-ordinate the departure/arrival on landline. After

takeoff from Belgaum, contact Hubli and inform Belgaum
about this. Belgaum hands over to Hubli and further
descent co-ordination is with Hubli. If departed from any
airfield other than Belgaum, then, at least 10 mins before
descent, request the controlling radar (Mangalore or
Mumbai) for traffic information and descent co-ordination
and pass it to Belgaum (if approaching from North) or
Hubli if approaching from South. Belgaum hands over to
Hubli once clear of Belgaum CTZ or traffic. If approaching
from Kolhapur, or Goa, request the departure ATC to do
the needful before departure. Further descent up to MSA
with Hubli. Below MSA descent after field in sight or from
overhead HB on out bound of NDB approach. If visibility is
more than 5000 M the ATC may allow visual approach if
requested.
ii. Warnings, Cautions and Notes:

1. High ground as mentioned above.

2. Narrow runway (30m/98 ft width) hence, a changed
‘perspective’ while on approach and during flare-out
for landing.
3. 180° turns only at runway end, on the turn pad.

H1.7 Landing Characteristics: Good braking action.

H1.8 Company Alternate Airfields for Diversion:

Airport ICAO IATA Radial/Dist

Goa VOGO GOI 271.1° (W) 73 nm
Belgaum VOBM IXG 317.8° (NW) 40 nm

H1.9 Missed Approach Procedure: As published in AIP/Jeppesen.

H1.10 Single Engine Procedures:

(a) Be conscious about the narrow runway. For a reject take off
following an engine failure, particularly in crosswind conditions,

ensure proper directional control.

(b) Runway 08: The hill at left of take off path for a Rwy 08
departure makes it important to avoid direction loss to the left
in case of loss of No 1 engine after V1. Acceleration altitude is
3000 ft on QNH (800 FT AGL). Turn left for NDB/visual circuit
after crossing acceleration altitude.
(c) Runway 26: There is no ‘performance limiting’ terrain or
obstacle in the takeoff path. Hence, there is no special ‘Single
Engine Procedure’ for Rwy26. Pilots are to adhere to the Single
Engine Procedures as stipulated in Chapter-3 of the latest
revision of DASH8-Q400 Aircraft Operating Manual (AOM).
