WAHS PREFECTS MENTORSHIP

Roles & Responsibilities of Prefects

The role of a School Prefect is not limited to one thing and will include: assisting teaching staff
in their lessons, supervising the canteen corridor and queues, organizing activities and
maintaining order in the School. Prefects are mainly chosen on the basis of their leadership
skills. The roles and responsibilities of the Captain, the Deputy Captain, senior prefect and
prefects include:

A. Captain

1. Act as a bridge between principals, teachers and students.

2. Help teachers to maintain a quality class and better school atmosphere.

3. Look after the overall activities of the school.

4. Keep vigilance on other students when they are in and out of the school.

5. Help Wayerfalls Adventist High School management to carry out the responsibilities.

6. Check the dress code of the students.

7. Act as a role model to their peers.

8. Counsel and guide (Chaplain) the peers in positive discipline.

9. Collect feedbacks and suggestions on school development plans from the peers and report
during meetings.

10. To make sure the students of the school uphold all the values as described by Seventh-Day
Adventist and the Republic of Zimbabwe.

B. Deputy Captain

1. To assist the School Captain to discharge the assigned duties to the Captain.

2. In the absence of the School Captain, discharge his duties as the acting School Captain.

C. Senior Prefects

1. In addition to the duties of a Prefect, a Senior Prefect is also responsible for the following
duties:

2. Maintain collaboration among Prefects.

3. Coordinate Prefects activity.


4. Provide link between Prefects Body and the School Administration.

5. Represent the Student Body.

D. Prefects

1. Observe the school rules at all times.

2. Be dressed appropriately at all times.

3. Maintain an excellent attendance record.

4. Be punctual for your duties.

5. Maintain a perfect behavioural record.

6. Be positive and enthusiastic.

7. Be able to encourage and motivate fellow students.

8. Be cooperative, helpful, well-mannered, trustworthy, and responsible.

9. Be respectful toward teachers, your peers, and the school environment.

10. Display leadership qualities: confidence, initiative, problem solving skills.

11. Be willing to take on extra responsibility.

12. Be able to work independently and complete tasks without supervision.

13. Maintain a good academic record (B average minimum).

14. Be a good ambassador for the school.

E. DISCIPLINE OF PREFECTS

1. Prefects should act as the role model for all the students in the School.

2. Prefects must adhere to School Rules and Regulations at all times.

3. The main duty of prefects is to maintain an atmosphere of friendly cooperation, peace,


discipline and unity in the School.

4. Prefects should serve as counselors to junior students.

5. Prefects must liaise and collaborate with each other, as a team, to ensure efficiency and
smooth running of their own area of responsibility and of the school as a whole.
6. Prefects academic and behavioural standards must be maintained.

7. Prefects will always work in the interest of the school.

8. They should follow the code of conduct as described by Seventh-Day Adventist, the WAHS
cide of conduct and the country at large.

F. Demotion or Dismissal from the Prefects Board

1. A prefect in a senior post (senior prefect, deputy captain or captain) will be demoted in the
following cases:

2. If the student is charged with any disciplinary issue, the matter will be send to the Disciplinary
Committee to analyze the matter.

3. Depending on the action proposed by the Disciplinary Committee, the School’s Senior
Management will decide to demote or dismiss the student from the Prefects Board.

4. School discipline refers to the rules and strategies applied in school to manage student
behavior and practices used to encourage self-discipline. School discipline addresses
schoolwide, classroom, and individual student needs through broad prevention, targeted
intervention, and development of self-discipline

G. What is the importance of school discipline?

Character and Analytical Skills. Discipline can improve students' character and analytical skills –
which are important to succeed in life. Lack of proper discipline can have significant negative
consequences such as poor academic performance, low self-esteem, and social problems.0

punctuality, peace, and an organised lifestyle. Discipline helps us focus on our studies and
achieve our goals. It teaches us to follow certain rules and regulations. Discipline plays a
significant role in our life.

Discipline in the classroom helps students stay focused on their academics. Over time, this
teaches them how to focus in other ways. A disciplined student is able to stay focused on his

How to maintain discipline in the school

Expected Behaviour and Discipline for Student

Come to School Everyday.

Be on time to school and to your class.

Follow classroom, school and playground rules.

Listen to the teacher and follow directions.


Be polite and courteous.

Don't be disruptive in class.

Walk – don't run or skate on the corridors

Help you to achieve goals. Self-discipline people are more likely to commit to, and reach,
important long-term life goals.

Improve your mental health. People practicing self-discipline report higher levels of self-
confidence, happiness and independence. ...
