EXERCISE 01
Plate Tectonics: Tectonic Processes at Different Plate Boundaries

Success Criteria:
I am able to
1. sketch and describe key landforms at convergent, divergent and transform plate boundaries.
2. use geographical concepts to describe the landforms at the different plate boundaries.
• Fracture vs Fault
• Convergent / converge / collide
• Divergent / diverge / move away
• Slide past
• Subduct
• Pressure

Instruction: Using the tectonic plate simulator, observe the changes to the landform near the various plate boundaries. Record your
observation in the table (refer to page 2) by

1. Sketching your observations.

2. Describing your observations based on the following

o Thickness of crust
o Shape of crust
o Changes to mantle / the magma
o Presence of volcanoes / earthquakes

DIVERGENT: Oceanic - Oceanic
• Thickness of crust: 3 Consolidation
WE The thickness of the crust
Becomes thinner.

DO!
Shape of crust:
1.Two oceanic plate diverge,
• 2. Decrease in overlying pressure causes the underlying mantle to melt, forming magma."
3. Magma rises through the fractures & faults, filling up gaps by diverging plates.
4.It cools down to form new oceanic crust.
as the plates continue to diverge crusts start to look like a mountain
Mountain

5. Over time, It creates an underwater mountain chain called mid oceanic ridge.
6.As the plates continue to diverge, it may form underwater volcanoes.
7.After many eruptions, these volcanoes built up in height to form volcanic islands,
8.Earthquakes may occur due to stress and release of tension as plates move.
