Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: recognise the grammatical elements for appropriate use


CO2 :: understand the usage of language for academic and social purposes
CO3 :: demonstrate key grammatical concepts in writing and speaking
CO4 :: prioritise and improve the arrangement and order of syntax within spoken

communication

CO5 :: appraise and communicate by using effective vocabulary and aesthetically enriched language

CO6 :: express effectively through oral and written communication in formal scenarios

Unit I
Tenses: uses and contrast of present continuous and present simple tense, contrast of present perfect continuous
and present perfect tense, contrast of present perfect and past simple tense, contrast of present and past perfect, use of
future tense

Unit II
Modals: rules of modal verbs can and could, comparison of may and might, rules and comparison of
must, mustn’t and needn’t, uses of should and would

Unit III
Parts of speech: different types of nouns, usage of apostrophe s (‘s) with nouns, usage of reflexive pronouns,
royal order of adjectives, degrees of adjectives, comparison of adjectives and adverbs, uses of
although/despite/unless/for, during and while, uses and comparison of different prepositions

Unit IV
Relative clauses and Reported speech: relative clauses with and without who, that, which, whose, whom and
where, comparison of different relative clauses, uses of -ing and -ed clauses, uses and application of direct and
indirect speech

Unit V
Articles and Determiners: uses and comparison of a,an,the, usage of article ‘the’ for referring to specific and
general things, usage of article ‘the’ with adjective, names with and without ‘the’, uses of different determiners.

Unit VI
Phrasal verbs: commonly used phrasal verbs, phrasal verbs followed by prepositions, conjugating phrasal verbs
and its use in day-to-day speaking
