Editorial note
Clinical microbiology and infection: an open call for editorial interns
CMI is looking for early-career researchers and clinician-
researchers to join our team as editorial interns. Each intern will
work closely with one of the editors. For the first year, the intern
will ‘shadow’ the editor, copied on all the traffic pertaining to the
editorial work. They will take part in the virtual editors meetings,
and in the editorial board discussions and decisions. In the second
year, we will ask the intern to take charge of CMI submissions:
decide whether to send the article for peer-review, invite peer-
reviewers and reach a final decision; all under the supervision of
the editor and the editor-in-chief. We believe that critical appraisal
of research, appraisal of reviewers' comments and the process of
communication with the authors revising their manuscripts is
highly educational. The editorial interns will gain insight and a crit-
ical view on research methods and adequate reporting methods.
The term of the appointment is for 2 years.
We have two aims when inviting interns to join us. CMI is
committed to encourage early-career researchers and clinicians
[1e3]. We want to publish their research; and we want to publish
research, reviews and editorial material that is helpful and relevant
to early-career people. We hope that the interns will help us to bet-
ter understand the needs and ways of communication with early-
career researchers and clinicians. A more selfish aim is to train peo-
ple who might later choose to join us as full CMI editors.
Who should consider applying? We are looking for clinicians in
the last year of their residency or fellowship, or during the 4 years
after completion of the residency or fellowship; for PhD students
in the same time-frames; and for post-doctoral fellows. For clini-
cians, we are looking of course for people in clinical microbiology
and infectious diseases, but clinicians in internal medicine or gen-
eral surgery or family medicine or emergency medicine whose
main research interest is clinical microbiology or infectious dis-
eases are welcome as well. For PhD students and for post-
doctoral fellows, we are looking for people whose main interest
research is infection and pathogens; whether as clinical re-
searchers, using epidemiological methods, or performing wet-
bench research. We would expect them to be the first authors of

at least three articles describing original research and published
in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in peer-reviewing, editorial
experience and activities in the different bodies of the European
Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases would
be an advantage. We would also be happy to hear about their
network of early-career people.

your career, your research interests, experience in editorial work,
networking and anything you would like us to know when consid-
ering your candidacy. Please attach two letters of recommendations
relevant to this position; your CV and list of publications; and in a
two-page document, ideas on how CMI can be more helpful to peo-
ple in training and to early-career researchers; and how to better
engage with them. Other suggestions on how to improve CMI are
welcome as well. Please apply before 1 September 2023. We will
make a decision latest on 1 November 2023, and expect you to
join us (if elected) on I January 2024.
