Local Buckling of Flange

When the flange is in compression, it develops wave formations along

free edges.

Vertical Buckling of Flange

When the web is too slender, the compression flange may buckle in
the vertical plane a stress less than yield stress.

Global Buckling Issues…

Shear buckling of web and tension field action

Longitudinal flexural stress and vertical shear stress causes principle

stresses to develop in diagonal direction in two mutually orthogonal
directions – one compressive and one tensile. The diagonal
compressive stress causes buckling of the web plate in the diagonal
direction creating diagonal waves or wrinkles.
