Being Multicultural!

Summary of the Video:

“Communication in the World of Diversity”

The discussion about how important the role of diversity in the world consumed of
4minute video. It emphasizes that diversity cannot be disregarded since it is obviously seen
in our everyday lives and no matter where we are. The example that was given by the video
is in the workplace. In a workplace, different people with different opinions, backgrounds
(degrees and social experience), religious beliefs, political beliefs, sexual orientations,
heritage, and life experience can be interacted. Communicating with them creates an
interpersonal relationship. Also, in the given definition of the cultural theory, diversity is a
variety of experiences and perspectives arising from the experiences in demographic
variables. Therefore, the organization implicated that practicing a strong intercultural
communication needs to eliminate the race, age, and gender in a workplace policy.
Moreover, the organization needs to highlight the Individualism vs. Collectivism and High
Context vs. Low Context to distinguish culture. Also, the organization must be aware about
the ethnocentrism, xenophobia and stereotyping. To make this elaborately understand, the
video gave an example character that story tells about how diversity is done in her
workplace. Jane Singham, a CEO of Mazda. Her workplace is located in Japan, it serves a
global market with international customers, suppliers, manufacturers and distributors. She
manages to conquer the language barriers in communicating globally to get a market sells
by attending a class in the evening. There she learned how to communicate using the
universal language. She also exhibits the social behavior, can speak legal and ethical, aware
of nonverbal differences and gender differences, respect age and religion, and distinguishes
how the ability and disability affects her organization. Since collectivist has a direct effect on
communication.
Critique Paper:

The video highlighted the diversity on what and how it works. It cited an example
situation in the life story of Jane Singham, a CEO of Mazda. In terms of using of formal and
informal language, she exhibits both. It didn’t mention in the video on how she talks with
her costumers, it is obvious given that she is using a formal language when interacting with
her costumers since she has a high position in the workplace. Jane can also address the
cultural differences in communicating with her clients and customers. As cited in the video,
one event Jane received a complaint about her female sale’s director who haven’t take the
handshake of an Arab client. This scenario initiates nonverbal differences that made Jane
realized and distinguish what is the problem with it. Also, the approach of each gender
indicates the linguistic style of communication which has been indirectly since the female
unintentionally untaken the handshake of the client. It creates tension between them that
made an uncomfortable situation. This may also, under the interpersonal distance
specifically in proxemic situation. It might be in one country, you might greet someone with
a kiss on the cheek, or handshake, in other places this might be considered too intimate
which cited on the video. Moreover, in the workplace of Jane Singham as I observed is
under the culture of collectivism. Collectivist cultures emphasize the needs and goals of the
group as a whole over the needs and desires of each individual which obviously shown in
the video on how progressive the organization where Jane is working. The cultures,
relationships with other members of the group and the interconnectedness between people
play a central role in each person's identity. And it eliminates the power distance and
perceptions of the time, their workplace has no race.

In conclusion, a good communication behavior in the workplace is important to work

efficiently and be productive. Employers who spend time and energy to create open
communication lines will quickly create trust among employees, resulting in productivity,
performance, and overall morale. Employees can experience increased morale, productivity,
and commitment if they can communicate up and down a company’s communication chain.
At the same time, employees who communicate effectively with their colleagues, managers,
and customers continue to be valuable assets to a company. Furthermore, a diverse work
environment is a vital asset, since it recognizes the person’s qualities of each employee and
the potential they bring. Respecting the contrasts of others is what eventually brings us all
together and can be the mystery to a fruitful, flourishing work environment and a fair work
culture.
