Fiche n°2

1- What is electronegativity? How is the concept of electronegativity used to predict

the bond types between hetero atoms?
2- What is different types of overlap between s and p orbitals?
3- Indicate the type of bonding that exist in the following solids: ice; Naphthalene;
diamond; potassium chloride.
4- Explain intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding with two examples for
each.
5- Based on metallic bond and explain why metals are good conductors of electricity,
malleable, ductile and having characteristic lustre.
6- Give the factor which favour the formation of ionic bond.
7- Discuss the shape of the following molecules on the basis of VSEPR theory NH 3,
CH4 ; PCl3; H2O;
8- Explain why
- Anhydrous NaCl is bad conductor of electricity but aqueous NaCl is a good
conductor;
- Glycol is more viscous than methanol
9- Give the difference between bonding and antibonding molecular orbitals; give the
characteristic of sigma (δ) and pi (π) molecular orbitals.
10- How the molecular orbital theory explain the difference in reactivity of F2, N2, O2
11- Explain with the help of molecular orbital the paramagnetic and diamagnetic
characters of molecules.
12- Account for the following with reason,
- Melting point of MgCl2 is much higher than that of AlCl3
- KI is soluble in alcohol but KCl is not
13- Does the pressure increase or decrease if as the force on a fixed area increases?
14- Explain why hexane has limited reactivity compared to benzene.
15- Consider the following reaction: 𝑁2 (𝑔) + 3𝐻2 (𝑔) ⇄ 2𝑁𝐻3 (𝑔)
At T = 298.15°K, ∆𝐺𝑓° (𝑁𝐻3 (𝑔)) = 328.1KJ/mol, ∆𝐺𝑓° (𝐻2 (𝑔)) = 0𝐾𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙,
∆𝐺𝑓° (𝑁2 (𝑔)) = 0𝐾𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙, R = 8,314 J/mol/K. Calculate the equilibrium constant of
reaction and specify whether the reaction is spontaneous or not.
