1 Introduction & Purpose
Eyewash stations are essential emergency safety equipment designed to reduce eye injuries when
safety precautions cannot stop exposure to a physical or chemical irritant or a biological agent. The
purpose of an eyewash station inspection is to make sure that these safety tools are in good working
order and available for use right away in an emergency. It is crucial to conduct routine inspections
to ensure that the eyewash stations adhere to safety standards and legal requirements and are
capable of efficiently administering the emergency eye irrigation that people who may have come
into contact with hazardous chemicals need.
1.1 Objective
A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for inspecting eyewash stations aims to create a systematic
and standardised method for carrying out exhaustive and efficient inspections of eyewash stations.
The SOP makes certain that inspections are conducted methodically and cover all crucial facets of
the eyewash station's performance, safety, and compliance.
The scope of SOP for Eyewash Station inspection outlines the boundaries and details of the
inspection process.
3 Responsibilities
Designated personnel or safety officers are responsible for conducting routine inspections of
eyewash stations.

iv. pH test strips (if applicable)
v. Maintenance log or inspection checklist
vi. Eyewash station manufacturer's manual
4.2 Procedures
4.2.1 Preparation
i. Put on appropriate PPE, including safety goggles and gloves, before beginning the
inspection.
ii. Ensure the area around the eyewash station is clear and accessible.
4.2.2 Visual inspection
i. Examine the eyewash station for any signs of physical damage, such as cracks, leaks, or
corrosion.
ii. Check the water supply connections for any leaks or loose fittings.
iii. Inspect the eyewash nozzles to ensure they are clean and free from obstructions.
iv. Ensure the eyewash station is clearly marked with appropriate signage and is easily visible.
4.2.3 Water flow test
i. Activate the eyewash station by pulling the handle or using the appropriate method as per
the manufacturer's instructions.
ii. Verify that both eyes are simultaneously irrigated with a steady flow of water.
iii. Observe the water pressure to ensure it is sufficient to effectively rinse the eyes.
iv. Check if the flow covers the eyes adequately and flushes away from the face.
4.2.4 Temperature check
i. Test the water temperature using a thermometer to ensure it falls within the recommended
range (usually between 60°F to 100°F or 15°C to 37°C). If the station is equipped with a
temperature gauge, ensure it is accurate.
4.2.5 pH testing (if applicable)
i. If the eyewash station is equipped with a pH-neutralizing solution, use pH test strips to
ensure the solution's pH is within the acceptable range.
4.2.6 Maintenance and documentation
i. Clean the eyewash nozzles and basin if needed, using a clean cloth or paper towels.

ii. Record the inspection date, findings, and any required maintenance in the maintenance log
or inspection checklist.
iii. If any issues are identified, follow the manufacturer's guidelines for repairs or contact the
appropriate maintenance personnel.
4.2.7 Training and awareness
i. Ensure that all relevant personnel are trained on how to use the eyewash station correctly
in case of an emergency.
ii. Conduct periodic drills to reinforce proper eyewash station usage.
