Interviewer: Hello everyone. You’re listening to Interesting people, interesting events on

KLW. I’m Jerry Bates. Tonight, we’re talking to Debbie. Welcome, Debbie. You come
from Manchester. Is this your first visit to Australia?

Debbie: It’s not only my first time in Australia, but I have never been abroad before.

Interviewer: And how do you feel about Australia? And New Zealand, of course. You’ve
been to New Zealand, haven’t you?

Debbie: Right. I’m having a great time. I’ve done so many things. I’m afraid it’s all just a
dream.

Interviewer: Have you already been to our capital city?

Debbie: Canberra? Sure, sure. And I’ve been to Sydney, too. It’s the largest city, isn’t it?

Interviewer: You’ve done your homework.

Debbie: And Melbourne is the second largest. I’ve seen the Opera House in Sydney.

Interviewer: Sure you have. It’s a must-see here. Where else have you been?

Debbie: I’ve visited Ayers Rock. Breathtaking.

Interviewer: Do you know that it’s a sacred place for the native population, the
Aborigines?

Debbie: Yes, my guide told me that. And he also told me that the first settlers were
convicts. By the way, I’ve met an old Aborigine, a didgeridoo player.

Interviewer: Have you played one?

Debbie: I tried to, but I couldn’t make a sound. My guide also told me about the world’s
largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef. We’re going to visit it tomorrow.

Interviewer: Have you visited any nature parks yet? You know that we have very
unusual animals.
8
Debbie: Can you imagine visiting Australia and not seeing kangaroos and koala bears? I
can tell you this, kangaroos are funny and koalas are really cute. I didn’t know that
koalas aren’t bears.

Interviewer: Have you seen any kiwis?

Debbie: Is it a trick question, Jerry? Do you mean kiwis, the birds, which, by the way,
can’t fly, or Kiwis, New Zealanders?

Interviewer: I’m amazed, Debbie. You can’t be fooled. New Zealanders do call
themselves Kiwis.

Debbie: Well, I’ve made friends with a girl from Wellington, the capital city, but I haven’t
seen any kiwis yet. That can wait. I’ve watched a rugby match, instead. It’s the most
popular sport in New Zealand.

Interviewer: Right. The All Blacks is the name of their rugby team. They always dance
before they start playing.

Debbie: I’ve seen their dances. There’s more. My new friend and I have travelled to
Rotorua together where we walked beside geysers.

Interviewer: And Kaikoura?

Debbie: No, I haven’t been there. I’ve heard you can see more than 35 different species
of whales and dolphins there.

Interviewer: And that is about half the species of whales and dolphins on earth.
Amazing.

Debbie: Yes, everything’s amazing here. But you know what is the most unbelievable
thing I’ve seen.

Interviewer: Tell me Debbie.

9
Debbie: A lizard with a third eye on top of its head. What’s it called? I’ve forgotten the
name.

Interviewer: The tuatara........

Nikki: I’m sorry, but I’ve seen it. Something else?
Keith: How about Transformers?
Nikki: No, thanks. I don’t feel like watching a SF. Any comedy?
Keith: Let’s watch Hannah Montana.
Nikki: OK. Let’s do that. Shall we meet in front of the burger place?
Keith: That’s a great idea! What time?
Nikki: How about 7?
