According to

Coloma (2004) states that drug dependence is the overuse

of a drug without due regard to accepted medical
practice resulting in the individual’s physical, mental,
emotional, or behavioral impairment.

Common drug types

THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRUGS. SOME ARE PRESCRIBED. OTHERS ARE KNOWN
AS CLUB DRUGS, ILLICIT OR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES, AND DESIGNER DRUGS.

GROUP 4
ECTASY SEDATIVES TOBACCO MARIJUANA
MARIJUANA

Marijuana is the term used to describe all that

comes from the cannabis plant. these are dried
and prepared for smoking and taken orally as
“brownies, maryjane, and weed. Marijuana has
pyschoactive effects.

ADVERSE EFFECTS
Anxiety, tension, irritability, irrational behaviour,
loss of self control
Decreased sperm production

GROUP 4
METHAMPHETAMINE

Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive

stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It
takes the form of a white, odorless, bitter-tasting
crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or
alcohol

ADVERSE EFFECTS
Anxiety, tension, irritability, irrational behaviour,
loss of self control
Loss of appetite and inability to sleep
Euphoria, Elation
Violent and destructive behavior and acute
psychotic reactions.

GROUP 4
INHALANTS

Inhalants are volatile substances that produce

chemical vapors that can be inhaled to induce a
psychoactive, or mind-altering, effect. Although other
abused substances can be inhaled, the term
"inhalants" is used to describe a variety of substances
whose main common characteristic is that they are
rarely, if ever, taken by any route other than
inhalation.

IMMEDIATE EFFECTS DELAYED EFFECTS

Confusion Loss of memory
Distorted Perception of time and distance Inability to thinks
Aggressive behavior Muscle cramps and weakness
Hallucinations Numbness of limbs

GROUP 4
Illusions Abdominal pains
Nausea and vomiting Damage to the central nervous systems,
Drowsiness kidney, liver, and bone marrow

GROUP 4
ECTASY

How Is Ecstasy Made?

- Ecstasy is made in labs, and makers often put

anything they choose into it. Because using cutting
agents or additives makes production quicker and
cheaper, the drug is usually made without oversight,
making ecstasy ingredients impossible to measure or
know. Ecstasy is made by combining chemicals like
isosafrole and MDP2P with a range of other additives.

GROUP 4
COCAINE
Cocaine is a powerful stimulant drug that comes
from the leaves of the coca plant, which is native to
South America. It is a crystalline powder that is
usually processed into a fine white powder for illicit
use. Cocaine can be snorted, injected, or rubbed
into the gums. It can also be processed into a solid
crystal form called crack cocaine, which is typically
smoked.

How Is Cocaine Made?

Cocaine processing involves many chemicals, and the
drug is cut with other substances by dealers to

GROUP 4
extend batches. Some of these substances, such as
fentanyl, are extremely dangerous.
NEXT

As a street drug, cocaine can be

taken in different ways:

People who use cocaine often may also have more
serious side effects and health problems, like:

Headaches
Convulsions and seizures
Heart disease, heart attack, and stroke
Mood problems
Sexual trouble
Lung damage
HIV or hepatitis if you inject it
Bowel decay if you swallow it
Loss of smell, nosebleeds, runny nose, and trouble

GROUP 4
swallowing, if you snort it
COCAINE
How does cocaine work?
Cocaine works by affecting the levels of certain neurotransmitters in
the brain, particularly dopamine.

Other short-term effects: Long-term effects:

Extreme sensitivity to touch, dependence
sound, and sight lung conditions such as bronchitis
Intense happiness anxiety, paranoia and psychosis
Anger/irritability sexual dysfunction
Paranoia kidney failure
Decreased appetite stroke
seizures

GROUP 4
heart disease and death.
SEDATIVES

Sedative is a medication that slows the brain's

activity or function; common types are
benzodiazepines, barbiturates, Hypnotics
(nonbenzodiazepines), and Miscellaneous sedatives.
SHORT TERM EFFECTS:
sleepiness
Dizziness.
Difficulty focusing or thinking.
Blurred vision.
Impaired depth perception.
Slowed reaction times and reflexes.

GROUP 4
Not feeling pain the way you usually do
SEDATIVES
RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
OF SEDATIVES

LONG TERM COMPLICATIONS

frequent forgetfulness
depression symptoms
liver failure
developing independency on sedatives

GROUP 4
SEDATIVES
ADDICTION POTENTIAL

SEDATIVES

SYMPTOMS OF SEDATIVES
OVERDOSE
Profound sedation
Slurred speech
Ataxia
Respiratory depression
Coma

GROUP 4
SEDATIVES

WITHDRAWAL
if you misuse sedatives and stop or cut back on these drugs
after heavy use for a few weeks or more, you’ll likely have
withdrawal symptoms, including:

Anxiety.
Loss of appetite.
Tremors.
Night terrors.
High fever.
Increased heart rate.
Rapid breathing.

GROUP 4
Seizures.
STEROIDS

Steroids, also called corticosteroids, are

anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a
range of conditions.
They're different from anabolic steroids,
which are often used illegally by some
people to increase their muscle mass.

used to treat a range of conditions.
○ asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD)
○ hay fever
○ severe hives
○ Eczema
○ painful joints or muscles – such as arthritis, tennis elbow
and frozen shoulder
○ pain caused by an irritated or trapped nerve – such as
severe sciatica
○ Inflammatory bowel disease – such as Crohn's disease

GROUP 4
○ Lupus
○ multiple sclerosis (MS)
STEROIDS

SIDE EFFECTS OF STEROIDS

steroids do not tend to cause significant side effects if they're

taken for a short time or at a low dose. But sometimes they
can cause unpleasant side effects, such as an increased
appetite, mood changes and difficulty sleeping (insomnia).
This is most common with steroid tablets.

GROUP 4
TOBACCO

Tobacco is often smoked in the form of

cigarettes or cigars or chewed;it contains
nicotine which is a stimulant and a highly
addictive substance that has been known to
cause cancer and other diseases.

GROUP 4
TOBACCO

OTHER CONDITIONS CAUSED

BY TOBACCO
Decreased HDL (good) cholesterol and increased blood
pressure (increasing risks for heart attack and stroke).
Erectile dysfunction (ED).
Lower oxygen to the heart and other tissues in the body
(increasing risks for coronary artery disease, peripheral
artery disease and diabetes).
More frequent routine illnesses like colds, especially in
children living with people who smoke.
Poorer lung function (ability to get enough oxygen) leading

GROUP 4
to COPD, asthma, bronchitis or emphysema.
TOBACCO

NICOTINE
Tobacco was introduced to America in the late
5th century. When tobacco smoke is inhaled,
nicotine is absorbed through the lungs and
reaches the brain in about seven seconds

NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

irritability
anxiety
loss of concentration

GROUP 4
sleeplessness
