ADDICTI

1 ON
Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder
characterized by a persistent and intense urge to
engage in certain behaviors, often usage of a drug,
despite substantial harm and other negative
consequences. Repetitive drug use often alters brain
function in ways that perpetuate craving, and weakens
self-control.

ADDICTION Part 1
What is

1
drugs
A drug is any chemical substance that causes a change
in an organism's physiology or psychology when
consumed. Drugs are typically distinguished from food
and substances that provide nutritional support.

In English, the noun "drug" is thought to originate from

Old French "drogue", possibly deriving from "droge
(vate)" from Middle Dutch meaning "dry (barrels)",
referring to medicinal plants preserved as dry matter in
barrels.

Addictive drugs may be classified as Stimulants,
Depressants, Hallucinogens, or Opioids on the basis of
their effects.

1. STIMULANTS - Drugs that speed up activities of the
central nervous system (CNS)
2. Depressants (Sedatives)- Psychoactive drugs that

slow brain and body reactions.
3. Narcotics (Opiates)- natural or synthetic drugs that
relieve pain and cause drowsiness.
4. Inhalants- Drugs that are inhaled or breathed in
through the nose to produce the desired effect.
5. Hallucinogens- Psychoactive drugs that alter
perception, thought, and mood.

COMMON
DRUG TYPES
Drugs can be grouped together in different ways – by
the way they affect the body, how they are used or
where they are used.

COMMON DRUG
TYPES Part 4

MARIJU
ANA

and flowering tops of a cannabis plant, especially
Cannabis sativa, used for recreational or medical
purposes by smoking, vaping, or ingesting.

Is also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary

Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a
greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers of Cannabis

used in the form of a crystalline hydrochloride; used as
a stimulant to the nervous system and as an appetite
suppressant. It is also known as “poor man's cocaine”.

Inhalants are a broad range of household and
industrial chemicals whose volatile vapors or
pressurized gases can be concentrated and
breathed in via the nose or mouth to produce
intoxication, in a manner not intended by the
manufacturer.

ECSTAS
Y
is a synthetic drug that alters mood and
perception. It is chemically similar to stimulants
and hallucinogens. MDMA is commonly called
Ecstasy or Molly. People who use MDMA typically
take it as a capsule or tablet. Many people take it
in combination with other drugs.

ECSTASY Part 8
COCAIN

5 E
Cocaine is a stimulant drug obtained from the leaves of
two Coca species native to South America,
Erythroxylum coca and Erythroxylum novogranatense.

Cocaine is a white powder that comes from the dried

leaves of the coca plant, which is found in South
America. Crack cocaine is a form of the drug that gives
a very quick, intense high.

Crack is made by cooking cocaine powder with baking

soda, then breaking it into small pieces called rocks. It
got its name because it crackles when it is heated and
smoked.

COCAINE Part 9
SEDATIV

5 ES
A sedative or tranquillizer is a substance that induces
sedation by reducing irritability or excitement. They are
CNS depressants and interact with brain activity
causing its deceleration. Various kinds of sedatives can
be distinguished, but the majority of them affect the
neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid.

They're typically used to make you feel more relaxed.

Doctors commonly prescribe sedatives to treat
conditions like anxiety and sleep disorders. They also
use them as general anesthetics.

TOBACC
O
Tobacco is a plant (Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana
rustica) that contains nicotine, an addictive drug with
both stimulant and depressant effects. Tobacco leaves

REASONS
BEHIND DRUG
ABUSE
There are many complex reasons. Some reasons are
intensely personal, while others are more common.
However, this list represents the vast majority of
reasons people use drugs.

REASONS BEHIND
DRUG ABUSE Part 12
5
FITTING IN
Peer pressure causes people to do things they would
normally not to impress friends or loved ones. It’s a way
of seeking out the feeling of being valued by others.
Receiving an invitation from a friend to come and party
with drugs or alcohol can be difficult to turn down.

Fitting in can especially be a reason among young

teens and adults. Unfortunately, drug use happens in all
types of socioeconomic situations. Wanting to feel liked
and loved by family and friends is a huge reason people
start doing drugs.

REASONS BEHIND
DRUG ABUSE Part 12
5
depression
Depression is a common mental health diagnosis in the
United States. Since depression is notoriously difficult
to treat for some, many people seek temporary and
instant relief provided by drugs or alcohol.

On top of that, many people who struggle with

depression do not get proper treatment or diagnosis.
Some people who have depression have no idea they
suffer from it.
