Background
According to the World Health Organisation, children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 17
should engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for at least 60 minutes daily.
However, studies indicate that there is a general decline in PA levels during adolescence (Dumith et
al., 2011:685; Sallis, 2000:1559; Telama & Yang, 2000:1617) while Kail and Cavanaugh (2007:318)
also point out that there is much evidence to suggest that most adolescents rarely get sufficient PA.
The following are snippets from the 2016 and 2018 report card on children and adolescent physical
activity in South Africa, respectively.

Against this background and as a student with some knowledge in Physical Activity, Health and
Measurement, write a think piece (750-1000 words) where you detail your personal views on
adolescent physical activity (PA). In your piece, the following must be covered:
• Do you agree wit the grades the researchers have scored South African children and
adolescents?
• What could be the cause of the declining levels of PA?
• What could be done to improve PA in children and adolescents?
• What role would you and the school environment play in improving school-based PA?
• What do you propose to improve overall physical activity?
