Content Working Backward Strategy [Polya’s Method]

Content Standards
The learners demonstrate understanding of working backward
strategy using Polya’s Method and its application to the
attainment of mathematics learning competencies and outcomes.

Performance Standards

The learners should be able to share some performance

standards from the curriculum guide that can employ
working backward stategy.

Learning Competency/ies Discuss the steps in Polya’s Method and how it apply to working
backward strategy.

Key Concept To be understood/ Significance of using Polya’s Method in solving math problem through

Review Review
1. What was the previous strategy that had been discussed last meeting?

Introductory
Activity Assessing Performance
Essential Question: Were the students able to understand the working backward strategy
using Polya’s method.

Analysis
Activity: Count back

The teacher will have a game called ‘Count Back’.

1. All students inside the room will stand.
2. To formally start the game the teacher will give a high number [ex. 42]
3. The first student to sit should shout a number [ ex. 42 or the number below
42] and no one should shout the same number.
4. The students who shout the same number will be out of the game.
5. If the students shout the same number the teacher will give a number again.
6. The winner will have a plus points on the activity or quiz after the lesson.

WORKING BACKWARD STRATEGY

Polya’s Method
Abstraction Goerge Polya designed a four step method to solev all kinds of problems; [1] Understand
the problem, [2] Devise a Plan, [3] Carry out the plan, and [4] Look back and reflect.
Because method is simple and generalizes well, it has become a classic method for
solving problems.
1. Understand the Problem
Make sure you understand what the question is asking and what information will
be used to solve the problem.
2. Devise a Plan
Figure out what method you will use to solve the problem
3. Carry out the Plan
Use that method to solve the problem
4. Look back
Double check your answer and make sure it is reasonable.

EXAMPLE;

I think of a number and add three to it, multiply the result by 2, subtract 4 and
divide by 7. The number I end up is 2.

APPLY THE STEPS IN POLYAS METHOD

1. Understand the Problem

Think of a number that will end up to 2.

2. Devise a Plan

Working Backward Strategy

3. Carry out the Plan

2 ×7=14
14+ 4=18
18 ÷ 2=9
9−3=6
4. Look Back

Therefore, 6 is the number.

Check.

6+3=9

9 ×2=18
18−4=14
14 ÷ 7=2

LET’S TRY

I think of a number, double it then subtract 8, I am left with 22. What was the
original number?

1. Understand the Problem

2. Devise a Plan
3. Carry out the Plan
4. Look Back and Reflect
Generalization

1. What are the four steps in Polya’s method?

2. What is the significance of Polya’s Method in solving math problem using
working backward strategy?
Application
In ½ sheet of paper answer the following questions.
1. Who invented Polya’s Method?
2. Importants of Polya’s Method in solving math problems.
3. Write the four steps in Polya’s Method

Evaluation
Quiz:
In ½ sheet of paper solve the math problem using the Working Backward Strategy and
apply the four steps in Polya’s Method.

Anne has a certain amount of money in her bank account on Friday morning. During the
day she writes a check for $ 24.50, makes a ATM withdrawal of $ 80 and deposits a check
for $ 235. At the end of the day she sees that her balance is $ 451.25 . how much did she
have in the bank at the beginning of the day?

Assignment
Have a research about other strategy/strategies that use the steps of Polya.
