Introduction to Water Pollution

Water, the essence of life, covers about 71% of the Earth's surface and sustains all
forms of life. However, this vital resource is under constant threat due to
contamination by various pollutants, a phenomenon known as water pollution.
Water pollution occurs when harmful substances enter water bodies,
compromising their quality and rendering them unfit for their intended uses .

is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities, so that

it negatively affects its uses. Water bodies include lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers,
reservoirs and groundwater

. The Causes of Water pollution

Industrial Waste. Industries and industrial sites across the world are a
major contributor to water pollution. ...

1.Marine Dumping.
2.Deforestation
3.Oil pollution
4.Agriculture
5.Radioactive substances
6. Waste water
7.Thermal pollution.
Agricultural is a significant source of water pollution due to the use of
fertilizers pesticides and herbicides.as well as pesticides
Accidental releases of oil, chemicals, and hazardous substances from
transportation accidents, industrial incidents, and oil spills can

Effects of Water Pollution:

On human health To put it bluntly: Water pollution
kills. In fact, it caused 1.8 million deaths in 2015,
according to a study published in The Lancet.
Contaminated water can also make you ill. Every
year, unsafe water sickens about 1 billion people. And
low income communities are disproportionately at
risk because their homes are often closest to the most
polluting industries.
On the environment Chemicals and heavy metals
from industrial and municipal wastewater
contaminate waterways as well.
This widespread problem of water pollution is
Jeopardizing our health
Destruction to biodiversity
These contaminants are toxic to aquatic life— most
often reducing an organism’s life span and ability to
reproduce—and make their way up the food chain as
predator eats prey. That’s how tuna and other big fish
accumulate high quantities of toxins, such as mercury.

Water pollution depletes aquatic ecosystems and
triggers unbridled proliferation of Harm to any of
these organisms can create a chain effect,
imperiling entire aquatic environments.
Prevention and causes water pollution
The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution)
Amendment Bill, 2024 was introduced in Rajya
Sabha on February 5, 2024. It amends the Water
(Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974
1. Wastewater treatment
wastewater treatment consists of removing pollutants
from wastewater through a physical, chemical l or
biological process

Use only phosphate free soaps and detergents. Minimize the use
of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers.do not dispose of these
chemicals motor oil or other automotive fluid Main causes of
water pollution
• Global warming.
• Deforestation.
• Industry, agriculture and livestock farming.
• Maritime traffic.
Measurement of water pollution
Water pollution can be measured through the various broad
catergories it can be defined into three major
categories Physical, chemical, biological. physical
includes the measurement of water temperature, turbidity,
total suspended particle in the
Water sample

Chemical it includes the measurement of ph value

Chemical oxygen demand cod and biological Oxygen
demand bod biological it includes the presence of
microbes in the water the total nutrients aquatic lives
are getting From the water water pollution can also be
measured by the aquatic habitat present in the water sample
key measures of water pollution the traditional
'water quality' indicators that most people are familiar with. They include
dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity and nutrients
(nitrogen and phosphorus). They also include measures of toxicants
such as insecticides, herbicides and metals.
Chapter 6: Recommendations and Conclusions of
the mini project
Therefore we conclude that water pollution is a critical
global issue that demands immediate attention and
concerted action It poses significant threats to
ecosystems, human health, economies, and societies. the
consequences of water pollution are wide
ranging, including environmental degradation, health
risks, economic losses and social impacts. addressing this
problems requires multifaceted
approaches, including stricter regulations, improved
wastewater treatment, adoption of sustainable
practices, and public awareness campaigns.by
prioritizing the water sources, we can mitigate the adverse
effects of water pollution, promote
environmental sustainability, and ensure the well being
of present and future generations effective solutions
involve implementing policies and regulations to
reduce pollution promting sustainable practices
inventing in clean technologies and raising awareness about
the importance of preserving water quality by taking
proactive measures to prevent and mitigate
water pollution Rivers and streams demonstrate some
capacity to recover from the effects of certain pollutants,
but lakes, bays, ponds, sluggish rivers, and oceans have little
resistance to the effects of water pollution.
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (like
oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, aquifers, and groundwater) usually
caused due to human activities. Water pollution is any change,
minor or major in the physical, chemical or biological
properties of water.
