Operations - 1

1 Order of addition does not change the sum.

When real numbers are added, the sum does not change, if the order in which they are added changes.
For example:
7654 + 45 + 874 + 789 = 789 + 45 + 7654 + 874

2 Order of multiplication does not change the product.

When real numbers are multiplied, the product does not change, if the order in which they are multiplied changes.
For example:
543 × 86 × 32 = 32 × 543 × 86

3 Real number x 1 = Real number

For example:
3278 × 1 = 3278
786 × 1 × 65 = 786 × 65

Operations - 2
4 Real number + 0 = Real number

For example:
3278 + 0 = 3278

5 Real number x 0 = 0

• For example:
3278 × 0 = 0
786 × 0 × 65 = 0
• If one of the numbers being multiplied is 0, then you do not need to multiply all the numbers to find the product – you know that the product will be 0.

Operations - 3

SUM Positive Negative PRODUCT Positive Negative

Positive + + - 0 Positive + -

Negative + - 0 - Negative - +

6 Two positive numbers

• positive + positive = positive always

• positive x positive = positive always

7 One positive and one negative number

• positive + negative = positive or negative or 0

• positive x negative = negative always

8 Two negative numbers

• negative + negative = negative always

• negative x negative = positive always

9 Order of subtraction changes the difference.

When real numbers are subtracted, the difference changes, if the order in which they are subtracted changes.
For example:
7654 – 45 (= 7609) ≠ 45 – 7654 (= 7609)

10 Any subtraction problem can be converted into addition problem.

For example:
7654 – 45 = 7654 + (-45) = 7609

11 Order of division changes the answer.

When real numbers are divided, the answer changes, if the order in which they are divided changes.
For example:
16 ÷ 8 (=2) ≠ 8 ÷ 16 (=1/2)

12 Any division problem can be converted into a multiplication problem.

For example:
16 ÷ 8 = 16 x (1/2) = 2
