MICHAEL JACKSON

Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana. He was the eighth
of 10 children born to Joseph Jackson, a crane operator, and Katherine Jackson, a
homemaker and a devout Jehovah’s Witness. Both of Jackson’s parents previously had
musical aspirations themselves: Katherine played clarinet and piano and had aspired to be a
country singer, while Joseph was a guitarist who performed in local R&B bands. They
encouraged their children to pursue musical ambitions, and Jackson’s career in music began
at the age of 5 under his father’s encouragement.
Almost all of Jackson’s siblings made marks in the music industry, including Rebbie,
Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy, and Janet Jackson. (His brother Brandon,
Marlon’s twin, died shortly after birth.) Joseph pushed his children hard to succeed,
making them rehearse five hours a day after school, and was reportedly known to become
violent with them.
Joseph molded his sons into a musical group in the early 1960s that would later become
known as the Jackson 5.
Jackson and his brothers spent endless hours rehearsing and polishing their act. At first, the
Jackson 5 played local gigs and built a strong following.
6

Despite the group’s great success, there was trouble brewing behind the scenes.
Jackson achieved unparalleled success with the release of his six solo
album Thriller (1982), which as of August 2021 was still recognized by Guinness World
Records as the best-selling album of all time, having sold 67 million copies worldwide and
34 million units in the United States alone.
Five years after Thriller, Jackson released his highly successful album Bad (1987).
In August 1994, Jackson announced that he had married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of
rock icon Elvis Presley.
Jackson died on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50, after suffering a heart attack in his Los
Angeles home. CPR attempts failed, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he died later
that morning.

orange bags outside the shop and returned home with Rocky.
Billy was tired and went back to bed. At first he couldn´t sleep,

A MESSAGE TO A NEW FRIEND

Hi Lucia
How are you? It was so nice to meet you last week in Sydney at the sales meeting. How was
the rest of your trip? Did you see any kangaroos? I hope you got home to Mexico City OK.
Anyway, I have the documents about the new Berlin offices. We're going to be open in three
months. I moved here from London just last week. They are very nice offices, and the location
is perfect. There are lots of restaurants, cafés and banks in the area. There's also public
transport; we are next to an U-Bahn (that is the name for the metro here). Maybe you can
come and see them one day? I would love to show you Berlin, especially in the winter. You
said you have never seen snow – you will see lots here!

Here's a photo of you and me at the restaurant in Sydney. That was a very fun night!
Remember the singing Englishman? Crazy! Please send me any other photos you have of
that night. Good memories.
Please give me your email address and I will send you the documents.
Bye for now
Mikel

STUDY SKILLS TIPS

Many studies about language learning ask the question: What makes a good language
learner? There are some things that good language learners do and some things they don't do.
Here are some of the most useful suggestions from studies.
✓ Don't be afraid of making mistakes. People often get things wrong. Good language
learners notice their mistakes and learn from them.
✓ Do group activities. People use language to communicate with other people. A good
language learner always looks for opportunities to talk with other students.
✓ Make notes during every class. Notes help you to remember new language. Look at
your notes when you do your homework.
✓ Use a dictionary. Good language learners often use dictionaries to check the meaning
of words they don't know. They also make their own vocabulary lists.
✓ Think in the language you're learning outside the classroom. When you're shopping or
walking down the street, remember useful words and phrases. Sometimes, when
you're at home, say new words to practice your pronunciation.
✓ Do extra practice. Test and improve your language, reading and listening skills with
self-study material. You can find a lot of this online.
✓ Imagine yourself speaking in the language. Many good language learners can see and
hear themselves speaking in the language. This helps their motivation.
11

✓ Enjoy the process. Good language learners have fun with the language. Watch a TV
series or film, listen to songs, play video games or read a book. It's never too late to
become a good language learner.

Colombia has maintained an important tradition for the past three centuries. This tradition
is the Barranquilla Carnival, one of the most important fairs and festivals in the
country. Over 4 days, every neighborhood, corner and street of Barranquilla is filled with
rhythm, dancing and color.
The Barranquilla Carnival is one of the most important cultural and folkloric celebrations in
the country. Each year, the city celebrates the most representative expressions
of Barranquilla identity and the Caribbean people of Colombia. In 2003, the carnival was
declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and in 2008 as
an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
The Barranquilla Carnival is celebrated between the 18th and the 21st of February in
Barranquilla. However, a pre-carnival is held since January 21st. The official opening of
this festival start ten days earlier, and during these days, locals and tourists can enjoy the
warm and joyful environment that Barranquilla is popular for.
The pre-carnivals start in Plaza de la Paz where the mayor of Barranquilla gives
the Carnival Queen keys to the city to the carnival. Later, along with Rey Momo (One of
the carnival characters) and the kings of the Children's Carnival, she reads the Bando, a
"decree" that begins the fairs and festivals of the carnival with the night parade of La
Guacherna.
The official celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival starts with traditional events in the
‘Cumbiodromo - Vía 40’, such as the Battle of the flowers, the great Parade of tradition and
12

folklore, the Orchestra Festival, and the Great troupes Parade, and more. The celebration
officially ends with the Death of Joselito Carnival.
