Today the artist Vincent van Gogh is very famous, but he was never famous during his
life. Vincent was Dutch. His family was from a small village in the Netherlands. His brother:
Theo, was a very important person in his life. Vincent was usually poor, but his brother
always helped him with money. Vincent was always good at painting, but he had many
different jobs. He worked for an art company, and in a bookshop, and he was a
teacher: He was interested in religion, and he wanted to study theology, but he
wasn't a very good student. When he was 27 he started to work as a painter: He
lived in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France, where he was with his friend, the painter Paul Gaugin. But
Vincent was never really happy, and he was often not well. When he was only 37, he ended his life. When Vincent
was alive, he wasn’t famous and his paintings weren't popular. Today his pictures are very expensive, and you can
see them in art galleries all over the world.

Do you know how old Coca Cola is? More than a hundred years! It was invented in 1886 by a chemist
called John Perberton, who lived in Atlanta, in the South of the USA. Its name comes from two of its
ingredients-coca leaves and kola nuts.) Pemberton tried to sell Coca Cola as a medicine. He told his
customers that it was good for headaches. They didn't believe him, and they didn't buy it.

After John Pemberton died, in1888, a man called Asa Candler bought the recipe for Pemberton's


medicine He decided to sell it, not as a medicine but as a drink. In 1892, he spent $ 12,000 on advertising it. The Coca
Cola advertising campaign hasn't stopped since then! And it has worked brilliantly. Coke has been the most popular drink
in the USA for more than sixty years.

In 1941, when the USA entered World War II, American soldiers began to travel all over the world. The President of
the Coca Cola Company promised to send their favorite drink wherever they went, five billion bottles of Coke were sent
around the world to the soldiers! And that's why, since the War, Coke has been famous everywhere. If you look on a bottle
of Coke you will find that one of the ingredients is called simply 'natural flavorings'. What are those flavorings? No one will
tell you! The recipe for Coke has been a secret for a century. The Coca Cola Company keeps it in a safe in Atlanta. In
1985, the company made a small change to its famous drink, Millions of people complained. The company had to go back
to the original recipe!

Anne Frank was a young Jewish / Christian German girl who gained international fame after her

murder / death following the publication of her diary. She wrote about her life, thoughts and

experiences of hiding / escaping from the Nazis in World War II. Her account of her two years

spent in an attic in Amsterdam became an international best seller. She died aged 15 / 19 in a

German concentration camp.

Anne Frank was born in 1939 / 1929 in Germany. Her father was a German officer from World War I. Anne was a very

studious and diligent student who had a passion for books. She went / moved to Amsterdam with her family after Adolf

Hitler came to power in 1933. She attended / joined a Montessori school and was a very energetic and outgoing girl.

In June 1942, Anne received a diary / notebook for her thirteenth birthday. She decided to use it as a diary and wrote

about her dream to become an artist / actress. In July, she and her family were ordered to go to a work camp. Instead,

they hid in the attic of her father’s workplace. They lived / shared the small space with another family for two years.

In August 1944, German security police encountered / discovered the hideout and arrested its occupants. Anne was

spent / sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Anne died in March 1945 and was covered / buried in a mass grave,
