PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES
The learners should be able to…
 Describe the Union and Intersection of sets.
 Demonstrate the mastery on identifying union and intersection of sets.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
a. define the union and intersection of sets,
b. perform the set operations of union and intersection of sets, and

 Manila Paper
 Marker
D. SKILLS TO DEVELOP: Critical thinking, cooperative learning, representing and
communicating.
E. VALUES INTEGRATION: perseverance, teamwork, accuracy and cooperation.
F. METHODOLOGY: 4A’s (activity, analysis, abstraction, and application)
G. CONCEPTS:
o Sets a collection of distinct elements, which are enclosed in curly
brackets, separated by commas. The list of items in a set is called the
elements of a set. Examples are a collection of fruits, a collection of
pictures. Sets are represented by the symbol { }.
o Union of sets (U) a set containing all elements that are in A or in B
(possibly both).
o Intersection of sets (∩) the set of elements which are common to the
given sets.

objectives.
For today’s topic, we have the following
objectives we need to attain:
At the end of the lesson the
students are expected to:
a. define the union and
intersection of sets,
b. perform the set operations of
union and intersection of sets,
and
c. use Venn diagram to represent
the union and intersection of
sets.

union and
intersection of
sets,
b. perform the set
operations of union and
intersection of sets, and
c. use Venn diagram to
represent the union and
intersection of sets.
Thank you, Ms. Bonita, for reading.

This activity will help you to understand
more about union and intersection sets.
And you will be provided of your needed
materials. (see attached activity sheet)
This activity will be graded by this rubric.

Very well said everyone, let’s give (The students will do.)
yourselves a round of applause.

Based from your activity, what did you

observe class? Any volunteer?
Yes Mr. Hernandez.
I observed sir in our activity, that
we need to make a Venn diagram
to identify the union and
intersection of sets.

Very well said Mr. Hernandez, thank you!

Now, that you have an idea about union

and intersection of sets. Let’s define first
what is union and intersection.
Important Terms/Symbols to Remember
The following are terms that you must
remember from this point on. What is union
of sets?
The union of two sets is a set containing all
elements that are in A or in B (possibly
both).
For example, {1,2} U {2,3} = {1,2,3}
Note that: A∪B=B∪A the union of sets A
and B is shown by the shaded area in the
Venn diagram.

Did you understand class?

Yes sir!

Next is, what is intersection?

The intersection of the sets A and B,
denoted by A ∩ B, is the set containing
those elements that belong to both A and
B.

Using the Venn diagram, the set A ∩ B

consists of the shared regions of A and B.

Yes sir!
Did you understand the union and
intersection of sets?

Do you have any questions? Clarifications? None sir.

If none, we can now proceed.

minutes Let’s apply the knowledge in identifying
and analysing the sets.

Try it.
Do this in your notebook and we will check
it after 3 minutes.
Given:
A = {1,2,3,4,5}
B = {3,4,6,8}

minutes

It looks like you already know to identify the

union and intersection of sets.

What is union again class?

The union of two sets is a set
containing all elements that are in
A or in B (possibly both).

What is Intersection?
The intersection of the sets A and
B, denoted by A ∩ B, is the set
containing those elements that
belong to both A and B.

Very good!
Do you have any questions?

If none, let’s have a quiz.

IV. EVALUATION
. Do the following exercises. Write your answers on the spaces provided:
A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} B = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8} C = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}
Given the sets above, determine the elements and cardinality of:
a. A ∪ B = _____________________
b. A ∪ C = _____________________
c. A ∪ B ∪ C = _____________________
d. A ∩ B = _____________________
e. B ∩ C = _____________________
