Correct. What is mean? Yes, _______. appears in a set of values.

it is the sum of the value of each observation in a

data set divided by the number of observations.
Good job.
Do you have any questions?

Very good. Now let’s proceed. None Ma’am.

Are you ready for another activity?

Yes, Ma’am
Motivational activity: PERSONALITY AVERAGE

PEDRO V. PANALIGAN MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Comunal, Calapan City /0936 – 943 – 9875/ pedro_panaligan1998@yahoo.com
This activity will teach us one of the essential
concepts of what we will be discussing today. It is
not just a game but also a learning experience for
us all.

Are you ready?

Yes, Ma’am.
How to play:

 To start with, five different attributes of the

students are considered. Say: age, weight,
grades in previous test, number of students in
their class, and number of teeth they have.
 Now the aspirant determines these numbers
and writes them down on paper to form a
query.
 The values of mean, median and mode of
these numbers are determined.
 Instructor evaluates if the computations are
correct, and provides feedback to improve.

Do you understand?

Yes, Ma’am.
Let’s start!

(The activity starts and ends)

D. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

That activity is related to our topic for today.

Mean and Variance of the Sampling Distribution
of the Sampling Mean is our lesson for today and
this is our learning objectives. Can you read it
altogether?

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able

to:
1. identify sampling distribution of statistics
(sample mean);
2. find the mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean; and
3. appreciate the importance of finding the
mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean like in
research, social experiments, etc.
So, these are the learning targets that we
must achieve at the end of the lesson.
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new
skills. #1
Today we are going to calculate means,
variances and standard deviations of sample
means. Who can define what is a mean of
values? Yes, ______.
it is the sum of the value of each observation in a
data set divided by the number of observations.

That’s correct. This is also known as the

arithmetic average. So, if you want to find out
your average daily sleeping hours during
quarantine period per week, you just add the
daily number of hours you sleep and divide it by
7 days.
What about the variance? Yes, _____.
it is the expectation of the squared deviation of a
random variable from its mean.

PEDRO V. PANALIGAN MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Comunal, Calapan City /0936 – 943 – 9875/ pedro_panaligan1998@yahoo.com
Very good. Informally, it measures how far a set
of numbers are spread out from their average
value. You can tell if the average number of
hours you sleep is consistent.
What about the standard deviation? Yes, _____.
It measures the degree of accuracy of the sample
mean as an estimate of the population means.

Very nice. Do you have any questions?

None, Ma’am

So, we have defined the three terms that we will

be discussing today. Let’s proceed to discussion
on how to calculate for these variables.

Discussing new concept and practicing new

skill #2

Consider the following data:

The data show the ages of displaced workers in
a construction firm during quarantine period.
Getting samples, we get the following
measurements:
Sample 1 Sample 2 Sample 3 Sample 4
22 20 20 25
24 22 21 26
26 21 25 27
28 25 27 20
Mean= Mean=22 Mean=23.3 Mean=24.5
25 5
We need to get the mean of the samples,
𝜇𝑋̅ = (25+22+23.25+24.5) ÷4,
𝜇𝑋̅ this is read as mean of the sample mean.
What is the answer?
23.6875
And now we must get the population mean
symbolized by 𝜇 or mu.
μ=(22+24+26+28+20+22+21+25+20+21+25
+27+25+26+27+20) ÷ 16, what is the answer?
23.6875

Observe that the mean of the sampling

distribution of the sample means is equal to
the mean of the population. Therefore, if a
population has a mean μ, then the mean of the
sampling distribution of the mean is also μ.
𝜇𝑋̅ =𝜇

Again, what is variance?

The variance of the sampling distribution of the mean
is the population variance divided by n, the sample
size (the number of scores used to compute a
mean).

And what is standard deviation?

The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of
the sampling means, which is the square root of the
variance, is also known as the standard error of the
mean.
This are the formulas for variance and standard
deviation.
For variance:

PEDRO V. PANALIGAN MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Comunal, Calapan City /0936 – 943 – 9875/ pedro_panaligan1998@yahoo.com
2 σ2
σ =
x
n
This is read as the variance of the sample mean
is equal to the variance of the population divided
by the sample size n, where variance is the
squared value of standard deviation
For standard deviation:
σ
σ x=
√n
This is read as the standard deviation of the
sample mean is equal to the standard deviation
of the population divided by the square root of
the sample size n. Yes, Ma’am.
Do you understand?

Very good. Let’s proceed to the actual examples:

1. Given that the distribution of young women’s
height where the mean is 52.5 in. and a standard
deviation of 6.25 in., describe the mean and
standard deviation if you randomly select 10
women as your sample.
Solution: a. solving for mean 𝜇𝑋̅ :
𝜇𝑋̅ =52.5
If 𝜇𝑋̅ =𝜇, then what is the mean of the sample
mean? Yes, _____.

Very good.
b. solving for standard deviation σ x
σ 6.25 σ = 6.25
σ x= = =1.98
√ n √10
What is the standard deviation of the population? n=10

That’s correct. What is the sample size?

σ x =1.98
Very good. So with that what is the standard
deviation of the sample mean?

Very Good. Let’s have another example.

2. Given μ = -10, σ = 5, n=500, find mean of the
sample mean and variance of the sample mean?
Since the population mean is equal to the mean 𝜇𝑋̅ = -10
of the sample mean, what is the mean of the
sample mean? Yes, _____.

n= 500
Very good. Now, let’s solve for the variance of
the sample mean. What is our n? Yes, ______.
σ=5

Excellent. What is our standard deviation?

2
2 σ
σ x=
That’s correct. What is our formula? n

That’s right. Substituting to the formula, what is 2 52

σ x= =0.05
our variance of the sample mean? 500

Very good. Do you want another example before Yes, Ma’am.

PEDRO V. PANALIGAN MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Comunal, Calapan City /0936 – 943 – 9875/ pedro_panaligan1998@yahoo.com
we go to our board works?

3. Given μ = 80, σ = 20, n=19 , find 𝜇𝑋̅, σ x and 𝜇𝑋̅ = 80

2
σ .
x
What is the value of 𝜇𝑋̅ ? Yes, ______.
σ
σ x=
Correct. Now let’s proceed in solving theσ x √n
What is the formula? Yes, ______.

σ 202
σ x= = =4.588
That’s right. Substituting the values of σ = 20 and √ n √19
n=19, what is the standard deviation of the
sample mean?
2
2 σ
σ =
x
n
Great job. What about the variance? What is our
formula? Yes, _______.

2 2
2σ 20
σ = =
x =21.05
That’s right. Substituting the values of σ = 20 and n 19
n=19, what is the variance of the sample mean?

None, Ma’am.
Excellent. Class, do you have any questions?

If that so, we can now develop your mastery

through boardworks.

F. Develop mastery

On the board, who wants to volunteer? Yes, ___.

1. Random samples of size 225 are drawn from a
population with mean 100 and standard deviation
20. Find the mean and variance of the sample
mean.
Given: 𝜇=100, σ = 20, n=225
𝜇𝑋̅ = 100
2 2
σ 20
σ 2x = = =1.778
n 225
Very nice. Who wants to go next? Yes, ______.
2. Random samples of size 64 are drawn from a
population with mean 32 and
standard deviation 5. Find the mean and
standard deviation of the sample mean.
Given: 𝜇=32, σ = 5, n=64
𝜇𝑋̅ = 32
σ 5
σ x= = =0.625
√ n √64
Excellent work.
Very good. Are there any questions?

None, Ma’am.
If that is the case. We can now proceed to our
generalization.
G. Making generalization and abstraction about
the lesson

PEDRO V. PANALIGAN MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Comunal, Calapan City /0936 – 943 – 9875/ pedro_panaligan1998@yahoo.com
Okay class, on your observation, what is the
relationship of the mean of the sample mean and
the population mean? Yes, _____.
They are equal

Very good. How about the relationship of the

sample size to the variance or standard deviation
of the sample mean? Yes, _____.
The higher the sample size the lower the variance or
standard deviation of the sample mean.
With that being said, which do you think is more
accurate, smaller or bigger sample size?
Bigger sample size.

That’s great. And how do you say so?

The smaller the standard deviation, the more
accurate the data is.
Very good. Are there any questions?
None, Ma’am.

If that is the case. We can now proceed in your

evaluation. Yes Ma’am. (The student expresses his/her view on
the importance of the topic in daily lives.)
H. Evaluating learning

Get one-half sheet of paper cut crosswise and

solve the following

1. A population has mean 5.75 and standard

deviation of 1.02.

a. Random samples of 81 are taken. Find the

mean and variance of the sample mean.

b. How would the answers to part (a) change if

the size of the samples were 25 instead of 81?

2. Compute the mean and variance of the

sampling distribution of the sample mean when
you plan to a simple random sampling of size 64
from a population with mean 44 and standard
deviation 16.

3. Repeat the calculations for #2 using a sample

size of 576. Explain the effect of the sample size
increase on the mean and standard deviation of
the sampling distribution.

Do you have any questions?

None, Ma’am!

You may start answering now.

(The students will answer the worksheet on a one-
half sheet of paper.)

(The teacher will give enough time to finish

the short quiz)
