Hess Hat
Knitting Notes:
One of the biggest problems with knitting fair isle in the round is pattern jogging. If a pattern doesn’t
have a consistent line of stitches with the same color you may end up with a ‘jog’ as you move from
round to round. This pattern uses two strategies to minimize this problem, (1) the pattern changes the
during the last stitch or two of each fair isle round and, (2) every three rounds the marker is moved.
Using these techniques the triangle pattern is maintained throughout the hat.
This all sounds complicated but once you’ve done the first two or three color changes, you’ll get the
hang of it. Just make sure to read the pattern carefully (and send me a Ravelry message if you’ve got any
questions).
As written there is space for up to 12 color changes (plus 1 background color), get creative with your
triangles!

Round 1 (Color A): CO 96 using any stretchy cast on (I prefer jogless long tail)
Round 15-17 (Color A/B): Follow 24 stitch chart four times per round*
* In order to maintain the pattern at the beginning and end of each round the very LAST stitches of
each round will be different than charted:
- The LAST stitch of Round 15 (Row 1 on the chart) will be K1 with color B
- The LAST two stitches of Round 16 (Row 2) will be knit with color B.
After completing Round 17 (Row 3), you will remove marker, Slip 3 stitches - place marker.
This is now the beginning of the next round.
If you are having trouble following these instructions read the written instructions on the next page.
