The negative impact of bullying among students

Bullying is an aggressive behavior that is prevalent among students. It is a deliberate

behavior perpetrated by one/group of students against another student to cause harm(Najam
& Kashif, 2018). This behavior that occurs among students can be in the form of physical,
verbal, and mental violence. First physically, such as slapping, hitting, kicking, or forcing
something. Second, verbally such as insulting, cursing, threatening, false rumors. Third,
mentally, such as threatening and intimidating. The factor that causes this negative bullying
behavior is the imbalance of power between the bullying students and the bullying victims.
This power imbalance includes physical strength, the number of perpetrator students
compared to victim students, and gender. One example of a student bullying case in
Indonesia is a student of SMPN 18 South Tangerang who was bullied by a group of students
from a different class. The reason they committed the bullying was because the victim
refused to sign up for a futsal match. The student who was the victim of the bullying was
ganged up on and assaulted with stones (Visty, 2021). When viewed from the definition,
causal factors, and case examples that have been given, "bullying behavior definitely has a
bad impact on students who are victims and perpetrators both in the short and long term."

As the author has stated earlier, bullying behavior has a negative impact on both
victims and perpetrators in the short and long term. For victims, the short-term impact is that
it can lead to feelings of insecurity, isolation, feelings of inferiority, depression or suffering
from stress that can end in suicide (Prasetyo, 2011). This is very bad because if the victimized
student already feels these bad things, he will not feel comfortable in the school environment,
which initially friends at school can be a support system for him to be able to study diligently
at school and make school a home, instead the victimized student will definitely have a bad
view of school and this will definitely affect the student's academic performance. Victimized
students may be afraid to go to school and this may interfere with their ability to concentrate
in class or participate in school activities (Gautam, 2022). On the other hand, the victimized
student loses the opportunity to actively participate or enjoy school activities (Al-Raqqad,
Eman, Talahin, & Elias, 2017). After that, in the long run, victims of bullying can experience
emotional and behavioral problems. This impact has a slow and long process (Prasetyo,
2011). Then the short-term and long-term impacts for students who become perpetrators are
that they will have high self-confidence, are aggressive, hard-hearted, and lack tolerance.
Students who are accustomed to bullying, it is difficult to develop good relationships with
fellow friends, do not empathize, consider themselves the greatest. The long-term impact that
is very concerning is that these students will easily become perpetrators of criminal acts.

Seeing the impact of bullying, it can be concluded that bullying behavior should be
overcome, because it is an action that has a bad impact on students. Bullying can damage
students' mentality and even damage the future of students, not only students who are victims
will be affected by this behavior but students who are perpetrators will also be badly affected.
Law No. 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection Article 54 states that "Children in and
around schools must be protected from acts of violence committed by teachers, school
managers or their friends at the school concerned, or other educational institutions".
Therefore, every student must have awareness and remind each other not to engage in
bullying behavior. Students should support each other to learn, not bully each other. Students
need to make school a place to build relationships well, supporting each other to develop,
both academically and non-academically.
