CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Bullying exists in all communities since long time. Bullying exists either in

developed or developing societies. Bullying starts in early age. Child starts to build

an initial concept of bullying. Then, it starts increasing and continues until it

reaches its peak in the basic phase stage (4, 5, and 6). It continues in higher basic

stage, and then started to decline at secondary level (Dickerson, 2005). Bullying is

considered a common form of violence in schools. Various studies indicated that

bullying makes schools to be unsafe places for schools’ students and it contributes

in the belief that some schools are become not safe anymore (Maliki et al., 2009).

Shahria et al. (2015) reported that bullying is deemed as a serious problem in

academic settings in all parts of the world. They found that bullying has negative

impact on academic performance. Females were more affected than males by

bullying. Bullying constitute a complex problem in school kids lives. It is a problem

that affects all students, either bullies or victims, and those who attended

interpersonal violence. Bullying may involve many sections verbal, physical

assaults, threats, jokes or language, and criticizing. All of such factors affect

individually, or collectively, and contributes in child’s bullying. It is well known that

bullying is difficult to eliminate or to stop it in schools because it is used by

students. Alison (2016) stated that bullying is considered as global problem that

affect emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of school-age children worldwide

Shafqat (2015, p. 45) argued that bullying in schools occurs in any place either in
school building or around school building and may occur in bathrooms, school

buses and during waiting for school buses, and in classes which may require

group work or after school activities. School bullying is a widespread issue that

affects school students in many parts of their lives such as; psychologically,

educationally and professionally. Sekol and Farrington (2016) found that bullies,

compared to non-bullies have been bullied before.

Peer bullying always has an effect on the victims, whether directly or

indirectly, and may be detrimental to their academic success. On the other hand,

cases in which teachers act violently or degradingly against their students are

referred to as teacher bullying. Both sorts of bullying can have a negative influence

on motivation, self-esteem, and general well-being, which can then affect how well

they perform in school (Holt et al., 2007).

Academic accomplishment and bullying in schools have a negative

correlation, based on empirical studies. That students who encounter bullying have

a higher chance of having academic problems, such as lower academic

performance, higher absence rates, and a diminished desire to learn (McMahon et

al., 2020). Bullying can have negative effects on academic performance that last

throughout a student's school career, emphasizing the value of early intervention

and preventative measures. It is crucial to comprehend the relationship between

school bullying, particularly peer and teacher bullying, and academic achievement

in order to effectively address this issue and foster supportive learning

environments.
Bullying at school affects academic achievement since bullied children feel

fear and weak and in the same time it affects students’ personality traits and self-

confidence. Therefore, such situation makes bullied students unable to follow or to

pay attention for their study well and even they might do not like to go to school.

Moreover, they miss opportunities to participate with their colloquies or even enjoy

school activities. Many researchers found that there is a strong relationship

between bullying academic achievement. Students lose concentration when they

are attending their classes.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to The Impact of School Bullying on Students Academic

Achievement in Senior High School Students of Manuel T. Sia National High

School

at Danlog, Pilar, Sorsogon, S.Y 2022-2023.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the personal profile of the students in terms of

a. Sex d. Family Income

b. Age e. Gadgets Available

c. Order in the Family

2. What are the factors that contribute to the negative impact of bullying on

students' academic achievement?

3. What strategies can schools implement to support bullied students and

improve their academic performance?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the Impact of Social Bullying on Students Academic

Achievement in Senior High School Students of Manuel T. Sia National High

School (MTSNHS) for the academic year 2023-2024. Its main respondents are the

Senior High School Students from two different strands namely, General Academic

Strand (GAS) and Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) with a total population of

165. Since this study focuses on the Senior High students, this does not include

students from and Grade 10 to Grade 7 students of MTSNHS and students from

other educational institutions. The researchers simultaneously engaged in this

study with other academic work, thus, this consequently cut down on the time

devoted for the research work. The results of this study will be the basis of

proposing measures efforts within schools, and how to raise the importance of

being computer literate through success not only schools, but in life.

Significance of the Study

This study signifies for the following reasons:

To the Administrators, School administrators play a crucial role in creating

safe and supportive learning environments. This research findings can provide

administrators with valuable insights into the detrimental effects of bullying on

students' academic performance. Armed with this knowledge, administrators can

develop and implement comprehensive anti-bullying policies and intervention

programs aimed at fostering a culture of respect and empathy within schools. By

addressing bullying effectively, administrators can promote a positive school

climate conducive to academic success and student well-being.

To the Teachers, Teachers are on the front lines of student interaction and can

play a pivotal role in both preventing and addressing bullying behaviors. This

research can empower teachers with a deeper understanding of how bullying

impacts students' academic achievement, as well as their social and emotional

development. Equipped with this knowledge, teachers can implement proactive

strategies to create inclusive and supportive classroom environments where all

students feel safe, respected, and valued. Additionally, teachers can recognize

signs of bullying and provide appropriate support to victims while addressing the

underlying issues with perpetrators, thereby mitigating the negative impact of

bullying on academic performance.

To the Students, this research sheds light on the serious consequences of

bullying beyond the immediate social and emotional harm. By understanding the

link between bullying and academic achievement, students can recognize the

importance of cultivating a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect within their

school communities. The findings can also encourage students to speak up

against bullying, seek support from trusted adults, and actively participate in efforts

to promote positive peer relationships and a sense of belonging. Ultimately, this

research empowers students to advocate for their own well-being and academic

success.

To the Future Researchers, the findings of this study can contribute to the

growing body of knowledge on the impact of bullying in educational settings.

Future researchers can build upon the findings to explore additional facets of this

complex issue, such as the long-term effects of bullying on students' educational

trajectories, the effectiveness of different intervention strategies, and the role of

school culture in preventing bullying behaviors. By expanding our understanding of

the dynamics of bullying and its consequences, future researchers can inform

evidence-based practices and policies aimed at creating safer and more

supportive school environments for all students.

Definition of Term

To achieve a common understanding, the following terms are defined

conceptually.

Sex - refers to biological characteristics that define males and females.

These characteristics include chromosomes, hormones, and reproductive organs.

In humans, sex is typically categorized as male or female, but there are also

intersex individuals who possess variations in sex characteristics that do not fit

typical definitions of male or female.

Age - period of human life, measured by years from birth, usually marked

by a certain stage or degree of mental or physical development and involving legal

responsibility and capacity.

Factors - are elements or variables that contribute to or influence a

particular outcome or situation. They can be various aspects such as conditions,

circumstances, or characteristics that play a role in shaping events or determining

results.

Bullying - refers to repeated aggressive behavior intended to harm,

intimidate, or exert power over someone perceived as vulnerable. It can take

various forms, including physical, verbal, social, or online harassment, and often

occurs in a repeated pattern over time. Bullying can have significant negative

depression, and academic difficulties.

Bullied - is the past participle form of the verb "bully," which means to

intimidate, harm, or exert power over someone perceived as vulnerable through

repeated aggressive behavior. If someone has been "bullied," it means they have

been subjected to such behavior in the past. Being bullied can have detrimental

effects on a person's mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Academic Performance - refers to a student's achievements in various

aspects of their education, including grades, test scores, class participation, and

overall learning outcomes. It reflects the extent to which a student has mastered

the knowledge, skills, and competencies required by their academic curriculum.

Academic performance is often measured using quantitative assessments, such

as GPA (Grade Point Average) or standardized test scores, and is influenced by

factors such as study habits, motivation, teacher effectiveness, and external

support systems.
