I’m a grandma in my 60s. In the spring of 2020, like the rest of the world, I spent a lot of time staring at a screen and
that was when I first got into the YouTube world. I discovered that onscreen offerings were truly endless. From one
YouTuber I learned how to plant my own vegetable garden. Someone else shared poetry from Robert Frost, wise sayings
from Confucius, and a smattering (一知半解) of other philosophical viewpoints, all of which helped me through some dark
days. Down the rabbit hole I went, scrolling for hours and hours, watching other people living their lives and giving me
advice on how to live mine.
As the months rolled by, YouTube turned my attention away from the hard reality of what was going on in the world. I
subscribed to several channels and waited anxiously for new weekly offerings. I watched people reading poetry or painting
by streams or looking out windows into snowy landscapes. I found all this calming. Such lovely scenery, such beautiful
background music, such pretty clothes they were wearing!
At some point though, I got upset by these artistic and seemingly perfect lives. Who is filming them? I wondered. Do
they rehearse or just act on the spot? Isn’t it cold, stepping through snowbanks in dresses? The questions kept bothering me
while forcing comparisons to my own somewhat more ordinary existence. I wanted to walk in a flowing dress through hilly
green field filled with wildflowers! Instead, I was marching through my neighborhood’s city streets in mom jeans.
In a moment of insight, I realized that I had a full and happy life, which although it wouldn’t win awards for perfection
onscreen, suited me perfectly. I put my phone away and started paying attention to my own life instead of watching other
people live theirs. I still like checking in once in a while. YouTube can be a rich source of entertainment and inspiration, but
I’ve limited my exposure. I am content with the knowledge that my addiction to life onscreen has been replaced by life
itself.

C. It taught her to accept reality. D. It brought some comfort to her.
26. How did the artistic lives presented on YouTube make the author feel?

3 / 15
A. Desperate B. Connected C. Envious D. Proud
27. What has the author decided to do in the end?
A. Seek inspiration from YouTube. B. Stop using her phone in daily life.
C. Focus on her own life instead of others’. D. Continue watching other people’s lives.

Sending a thumbs-up(竖起拇指) can be seen as passive aggressive, according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and
2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal between friends or at work, the symbol
appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.
A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is
‘hurtful’. “No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it.
Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they're mad at me,” he added. Other young people agreed it is
bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.
“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on
there just replied with a thumbs up. I don't know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,” one woman said. One Reddit
user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I’ve read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray … all
the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”
Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree”
or “I understood and will follow.”
Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to
communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2,000 people conducted by Perspectus
Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use
thumbs-up or heart emoji.
28.Which of the following point is not the Gen Z’s understanding of the emoji thumbs-up?
A. Being rude. B. Being agreeable.
C. Being hurtful. D. Being unfriendly.
29. What does the underlined word “hostile” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Unfriendly and aggressive. B. Tough and difficult.
C. Unwanted and unacceptable. D. Novel and uncommon
30. Why can’t older workers understand the young’s reaction to the thumbs-up emoji?
A. Because of their poor communication skill.
B. Because of their being old with worse memory.
C. Because of their less communicating with the young.
D. Because of their different understanding of the emoji.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Rejected by the younger generation.
B. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Highly Welcomed by ‘Old People’.
C. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap.
D. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Being Aggressive.

Portia Kapraun has always seen unwelcome ads on Twitter, usually from major brands pitching ( 竭 力 推 销 ) her
expensive jewelry or vehicles that she, as a librarian in Indiana, could not afford. Ms. Kapraun was not interested. But she
soon saw the ads again. And again. And again. “These feel like low-end ads,” she said. In a shaky advertising market in an
uncertain economy, ads that few people want to see suddenly seem to be everywhere.
Advancements in digital advertising technology were meant to improve users’ experience. People interested in shoes
are intended to get ads for sneakers and boots, not repeated pitches promoting gold investments. And the technology is
supposed to remove misleading or dangerous pitches. But lately, on several platforms, the opposite seems to be happening
for a variety of reasons, including a slowdown in the overall digital ad market. As numerous deep-pocketed marketers have

4 / 15
pulled back, and the softer market has led several digital platforms to lower their ad pricing, opportunities have opened up
for less demanding advertisers.
Advertising experts agree that poor-quality ads appear to be increasing greatly. They point to a variety of potential
causes: internal troubles at technology companies, weak content moderation (审核), and high-level advertisers seeking other
choices. Then, there’s the economy: A recent survey of 43 multinational companies representing more than $44 billion in
advertising spending found that nearly 30 percent planned to cut back on their marketing spending last year.
Other factors are also contributing to lower advertising quality. Social media advertising, once only practiced by
specialists, is now easily available to anyone. Many of them are avoiding targeted ads—placements intended to reach
specific audiences, usually at a higher cost—in favor of a cheaper spray-and-pray (广撒网式的) approach online, hoping to
catch the attention of gullible (容易受骗的) or bored shoppers. Major social media platforms are now like “a mall that used
to be good”, Corey Richardson, vice president at a multicultural ad company, says. “But now there’s no longer a mall there
—it’s just a calendar store and a place sling beepers (传呼机). ”
32. What message does the author want to deliver in Portia Kapraun’s story?
A. Repeated ads have a strong power of persuasion.
B. Social media users often encounter unwanted ads.
C. Major brands usually prefer social media advertising.
D. An uncertain economy leads to lower levels of consumption.
33. What can be inferred about the “less demanding advertisers” mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. They are forced to exit the digital ad market.
B. They have benefited from advertising experts.
C. They can now advertise at a more affordable price.
D. They work hard to improve their users’ experience.

34. What is Corey Richardson’s attitude to major social media platforms?

A. Favorable. B. Hopeful C. Unclear. D. Negative.
35. Which of the following is main idea of the text?
A. Where is social media advertising heading
B. What is shaking up the online advertising market
C. Why are you seeing so many bad digital ads now
D. How are targeted ads impacting your purchase decisions

I was moving as fast as I could, stepping cautiously from rock to rock along the uneven jetty (栈桥). Far ahead, I
could see the back of my brother’s sandy hair and the bright orange of his shorts.
“Too slow, sister!” I heard Sam yell as he hopped with ease.
“I’ll show him,” I thought, and attempted a double jump. What a mistake! My left foot came down hard between the
edges of two gray rocks, scraping my ankle. “Ouch!” I yelled. I tried to wiggle (扭动) my foot out, but my shoe was
stuck. I bent closer to the rock and that’ s when I saw it: a shiny, square shaped stone the color of water, attached to a glittery
gold chain. It was just lying there on the wet sand, and a few seconds later it was in my pocket.
Sam squinted(眯着眼睛看)in the sun. Could he tell I was hiding the most perfect discovery of the summer? I kept
turning the treasure around in my pocket, pushing each corner of the square stone into my finger. I was dizzy, but I didn’t
want Sam to notice. He liked to tell everybody my business.
“Ryan saved the mini cola bottle from the carnival! It happened to be perfect for sand art!”
“Ryan wasted her allowance on salt and pepper shakers from the yard sale!” They were antique little pig and cost only
50 cents.
My family calls me their “little collector”. Some mean kids at school call me “trash girl”.
Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Through the window of the
candy shop, I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read LOST: Gold and blue necklace.
Very special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster. The necklace looked different from the
one I clutched in my pocket, I decided. Rounder, bluer. The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up
months ago. We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by now, I
thought.

Getting to know the Intangible Cultural Heritage Around Us
Aiming to help increase our knowledge and appreciation of China’s intangible cultural heritage, a group of us students
participated in the activity with the theme of “Getting to know the Intangible Cultural Heritage Around Us” organized by
Student Union last week.
A lecture themed on clay figure was delivered by a famous craftsman, who showed us how to make them and
displayed many of his art works, which are highly awarded. Then followed the hands-on practice where we experienced the
whole procedure under the guidance of the master, leaving us spellbound.
Not only did it offer an opportunity for us to see beautiful works of art, but it also fueled our passion and promoted our
awareness in protecting the Intangible Cultural Heritage Around Us.
One possible version
Once home, I placed the necklace in my special spot for special things, lost in thought. So far, there were a variety of
things like mini cola bottles and shakers. I stared at the stone, so clean and polished. Could it be Chrissy’s? Was it a very
special necklace? Should I return it to her? I paced back and forth in the room anxiously, not knowing what to do. Having
struggled for a long time, I finally decided to call the number on the poster and get in touch with Chrissy. I told her that I
might have something that belonged to her and made an appointment with her.
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting across from Chrissy in the candy shop. We were drinking milkshakes and sharing an
order of sweet potato fries. Looking at the blue stone in her hand with her tearful eyes, she told me that the necklace was a
gift from her mom before she got sick and she was grateful to me for returning the necklace to her. “Holding onto it
somehow makes things a little better.” she said. I couldn’t agree more with her. It dawned on me that I became “a treasure
girl” instead of “a trash girl” called by the mean kids at school.

根据第一段“ Sending a thumbs-up ( 竖起拇指 ) can be seen as passive aggressive,
according to Gen Z”, 第二段“A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in
any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’.” 和“Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the
team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.”
根据文章第一、二段的叙述,以及第三段“ My last workplace had a
Whats Appchat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs
up. I don't know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,” 可知, 这 位 女性 上一个 工作 地点绝大 多数 人都会在

Portia Kapraun has always seen unwelcome ads on Twitter, usually from
major brands pitching (竭力推销) her expensive jewelry or vehicles that she, as a librarian in Indiana, could not afford. Ms.
Kapraun was not interested. But she soon saw the ads again. And again. And again.
Portia
As numerous deep-pocketed marketers have pulled back, and the softer
market has led several digital platforms to lower their ad pricing(随着众多财力雄厚的营销人员撤出市场,加上市场疲
C 选项“They can
now advertise at a more affordable price.(他们现在可以以更实惠的价格做广告。)”
Many of them are avoiding targeted ads —placements intended to reach
specific audiences, usually at a higher cost — in favor of a cheaper spray-and-pray (广撒网式的) approach online, hoping
to catch the attention of gullible (容易受骗的) or bored shoppers.
Major social media platforms are now like “a mall that used to be good”, Corey Richardson, vice
president at a multicultural ad company, says. “But now there’s no longer a mall there—it’s just a calendar store and a place
sling beepers (传呼机).
Corey Richardson
因此 C 选项“Why are you seeing so many bad digital ads now?( 为什么你现

M: Getting to work in the morning seems to take longer each day. I was late again this morning.

13 / 15
W: Are you still driving in?
M: Yes. The traffic was so bad in the morning. It’s just one traffic jam after another on the road.
(Text 2)
M: I like that new clothes shop. The one I usually use is so far out of town. I hardly ever go there.
W: Me, neither, and the people who work at the new shop couldn’t be nicer. But I found the range of styles there was quite
narrow.
(Text 3)
M: Hi, I ordered a book from Justin Lewis last week. I was wondering if it has come in yet. My name is Peter Schneider.
W: Let me check it for you, Mr. Schneider. Yes, the book has arrived this morning and should be ready for you to pick up
this afternoon.
(Text 4)
W: I wish I had more time to spend with Lily. She has to go to a babysitter every morning.
M: It’s tough when you work so much.
W: Well, sometimes I have to ask my boss for leave to look after her.
(Text 5)
W: Are there any flights on June fifteenth to Hawaii?
M: Hmm, all flights on that day are sold out. But there’s one flight with availability on June fourteenth.
W: That date will work for me. I’d prefer a window seat. M: There’s just one available. I’ll book that for you now.
(Text 6)
M: I need to get a new bed for my flat. Is there anywhere you can recommend?
W: The furniture store in town has some and they’re good quality.
M: Really? I might go there later. I was thinking of looking online but it’s difficult to tell how comfortable they’d be if you
can’t try them out first.
W: Well, you might find a bargain that way. You could try one out in the shop and then order the same style online if you
find one that costs less than the one at the shop.
M: Good idea. I will do that.
(Text 7)
W: Oh, Jeremy, there you are. Have you had a chance to check out the problem I mentioned yesterday? I think there’s an
issue with the heater in the conference room.
M: Ah … not yet. I’ve been setting up the new workspaces for the part-time workers we recently hired.
W: I’m planning to host our visiting clients in that room this afternoon, so I’ll change the location if it’s still cold in there.
M: OK. I’ll get to the conference room as soon as I finish. W: Great. And let me know if it can’t be fixed by noon.
(Text 8)
M: Hey, Cindy. Would you like to watch a concert on Saturday at the city center? A local band is giving a charity concert for
the Children’s Cancer Foundation.
W: I’d like to, but my cousin Jane is visiting me from out of state and I have to spend the weekend with her.
M: Why don’t we invite your cousin too? Nobody can really say no to a night of music and fun.
W: That sounds a lot of fun. I’ll call my cousin and see if she’s interested.
M: Do you want me to check whether they still have tickets?
W: Thanks, could you do that for me now?
(Text 9)
M: So Olivia, tell us how that happened.
W: Well, when I was driving in the mountain road, I took a wrong turning and got completely lost.
M: Was that frightening?
W: Yeah. While I was trying to decide how to get back to the main road, some heavy snow started coming down.
M: I was quite certain it wouldn’t last long. It was March in Italy.
W: I wasn’t worried at first, but I didn’t have much petrol left so I switched off the engine. I tried to phone for help but

14 / 15
couldn’t get through.
M: How did you stay warm? With the car heater?
W: That meant having the engine on so I only used it a bit. Instead I got all of my jumpers and trousers from my suitcases
and wore them all night. I was still frozen, though, and wished I had some coffee or tea with me.
M: So you spent the whole night inside the car?
W: Yes. I managed to contact the emergency services finally. They knew my location from my phone signal. They’d called
to ask if I needed an ambulance and luckily I didn’t need it, so they just cleared the snow and led me along the road back to
the main road.
(Text 10)
W: Hi everyone. I’d like to welcome you aboard our train trip through high desert scenery. Our trip today lastsone and a half
hours and the train climbs uphill for the first forty-five minutes and then makes its way down to a town called Old sville. In
the twentieth century, oil was discovered here and an important industry developed. It didn’t last long, however, and tourism
is the biggest industry these days. There’s a lot to see in the town. On the journey you won’t see any animals during the
daytime because it’s too hot, but you should lookout for beautiful desert plants right next to the track, although at this height
there are no trees. At one point, we go over an old wooden bridge. People get worried because it’s noisy, but it’s quite safe.
There’s no river under the bridge, but you can see some large colorful rocks —they’re fantastic. We don’t make any stops on
the trip because all the stations were closed long ago. At the far end of our train there’s a small store selling souvenirs that
you can’t buy anywhere else. The other things which we sell during your ride are drinks. Unfortunately, the machine selling
these is broken, so once we’re underway I’ll be walking down the train with everything in a basket. So stop me if you want
anything.
