C. Functions

Consider the following requests. All are asking the same thing, but with different language:

Would you help me out?

Could you possibly help me out?
Do me a favour and help me out!

1. Give examples of three other ways we could make this request.

Do you mind helping me out?

Would you be kind enough to help me out?
I’d appreciate it if you could help me out?

2. What factors are important in deciding which of these forms should be used?

We have two factors the first one is the level of formality and the second one the level of politeness

3. Which of the request above would you choose to teach to a beginner class? Why?
I would choose the expressions ‘would you or could you’ because they are easy to remember and the
verb does not change after them.

D. Vocabulary

How would you explain the difference between these words in simple terms?
1. steal/rob
“Steal” is more of a general term. It refers to taking something that does not belong to you without
permission, while “rob” specifically refers to taking something from someone by force or threat.

2. win/beat
“Win” specifically means achieving success in a competition, while “beat” can refer to both
achieving success and overcoming challenges, with or without a direct competition.

3. skinny/thin

“Skinny can sometimes have a negative connotation as it implies an extreme thinness, whereas
“thin” simply describes someone or something with a low amount of body thickness.

E. Punctuation
Rewrite the following text punctuating it and changing any words to make it seem more natural.

This is your invitation to cruise onboard the world's most famous ship and experience its
unequalled reputation for style, comfort, and personalized service. In January 1996, Queen
Elizabeth 2 embarks on her annual world cruise, offering New Zealand passengers unique and
affordable opportunities to experience the ultimate adventure.

F. Approaches to teaching and learning

1. Think about your experience(s) in learning a foreign language.

What do you think makes an effective language lesson?
Write no less than 200 words.
Thinking about my experience in learning a foreign language, there are some things to
take into consideration when wanting an effective language lesson. First, setting clear
objectives. The objectives should be specific and attainable. The second thing is diversifying
the materials and making them interesting to make the students feel motivated. The last and
the important thing is contextualization. It refers to linking language learning to real life
situations, by this way students are going to feel the need for learning a language and they
will extend the use of it outside the school sitting.

2. you are required to work together on lesson planning, as well as give and receive feedback following
practice teaching sessions. Imagine that a sensitive colleague has delivered a poor lesson. How
would you present feedback, keeping in mind the need to learn, as well as your colleague’s feelings?
Write no less than 200 words.
When providing feedback to a sensitive colleague, it's important to approach the
situation with understanding and focus on constructive criticism. Here’s how would I present
the feedback. Firstly, I will start by mentioning the positive aspects of the lesson to provide
encouragement. Next, I would address the areas that need improvements, I would use a
supportive language and a kind tone of voice to avoid causing offense. For example, I might
say “I noticed that your TTT is high during the lesson, perhaps you could try to involve the
students more and make them construct the lesson with you”. Throughout the feedback
session, I would maintain a positive environment in which my colleague feels safe and
comfortable to express and clarify.
To sum up, the role of feedback is to support the ones development while respecting
their feelings by offering constructive criticism with understanding.
3. In some cultures, students are expected to sit in silence until asked a question. Imagine that you are
working in a classroom where you want to establish a more interactive and relaxed environment.
How would you go about doing this?
Write no less than 200 words.
If I want to establish a more interactive and relaxed environment in my classroom, I
would implement the following strategies to encourage participation and engagement.
 The use of Icebreaker activities: I can start each class with a fun activity like tongue
twisters, adverbs or a game.
 Using open-ended questions instead of asking questions that requires yes or no answers to
encourage students to share their thoughts and prompt deeper discussions and reflection.
 The most important strategy that I would use is integrating technology: as it is known,
students nowadays are digital Learners. So, your role as a teacher is to integrate
technology in your lessons and encourage students to research topics and create
multimedia presentations using technology.
Overall, I think by implementing these strategies, the classroom would be shifted
from a passive one to an active, engaging and interactive one.
