Solving Quadratic Equations by
Factoring
When c = 0 in the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0,
it results in a quadratic equation of the form

Solution:
Step 1: Identify the GCF of the numerical coefficients.

The GCF is 3.
Step 2: Identify the literal coefficient with the least exponent.

The literal coefficient with the least exponent is x.

Step 3: Combine the answer in step 1 & 2.

Result is 3x.
Example 1: Solve 3x2 + 18x = 0 by factoring.
Solution:
Step 4: Use the result in step 3 to divide each terms of the polynomial to obtain the
other factor.

The factored form of 3x2 + 18x = 0 are 3x(x + 6).

Answer : The solution set of the equation is {0, -6}.
Example 2: Solve 4x2 - 2x = 0 by factoring.
Solution:
Step 1: Identify the GCF of the numerical coefficients.

The GCF is 2.
Step 2: Identify the literal coefficient with the least exponent.

The literal coefficient with the least exponent is x.

Step 3: Combine the answer in step 1 & 2.

Result is 2x.
Example 2: Solve 4x2 - 2x = 0 by factoring.
Solution:
Step 4: Use the result in step 3 to divide each terms of the polynomial to obtain the
other factor.

The factored form of 4x2 - 2x = 0 are 2x(2x - 1).

Example 2: Solve 4x2 - 2x = 0 by factoring.
Solution:
Step 5: Apply the zero product property by setting each factor of the quadratic
expression equal to 0.

2x(2x - 1) = 0
2x = 0 (2x - 1) = 0
2x = 0 2x =1

Remember :
The roots of quadratic
equation of the form
ax2 + bx = 0 are
x = 0 and x = -b.

Example 3: Solve 7x2 + 8x = 10x2 + 12x by factoring.
x = 0 and x = - b
Solution: a
7x2 + 18x = 10x2 + 12x
7x2 - 10x2+ 18x - 12x = 0

Answer : The solution set of the equation 7x2 + 8x is
{0, 2}.
Use the fact that the roots of ax2 + bx = 0 are
x = 0 x = -b
a
solve the following equations:

1. x2 + 3x = 0 x = 0 and x = -3
2. 2x2 + 8x = 0 x = 0 and x = -4
3. 9x2 - x = 0 x = 0 and x = 1

Factoring may also be used to solve a
quadratic equation in the form ax2 + bx + c = 0,
when none of the constants a, b, or c is 0.
Step 1 : Transform the quadratic equation into
standard form if necessary. ax2 + bx + c = 0

Step 2 : Factor the quadratic equation.

Step 3 : Apply the zero product property by

setting each factor of the quadratic expression
equal to 0.
Zero Product Property
If the product of two real numbers is zero, then either of
the two is equal to zero or both numbers are equal to zero.

Step 4: Solve each resulting equation.

Example 4: Find the solutions x2 + 9x = -8 by
factoring.
Solution:
Step 1 : Transform the quadratic equation into standard form if
necessary: ax2 + bx + c = 0

x2 + 9x = -8
x2 + 9x + 8 = 0
Example 4: Find the solutions x2 + 9x = -8 by
factoring.
Solution:
Step 2 : Factor the quadratic equation.

x2 + 9x + 8 = 0
Factor the last term, 8, whose sum is 9.
(1)(8) = 8 ; 1 + 8= 9
(-1)(-8) = 8 ; (-1) + (-8)= -9

(x ) (x )=0 (x + 1 ) (x + 8) = 0
Example 4: Find the solutions x2 + 9x = -8 by
factoring.
Solution:
Step 3 : Apply the zero product property by setting each factor
of the quadratic expression equal to 0.
(x + 1) (x + 8) = 0
(x + 1) = 0 (x + 8) = 0
Example 4: Find the solutions x2 + 9x = -8 by
factoring.
Solution:

Step 4: Solve each resulting equation.

(x + 1) (x + 8) = 0
x+1=0 x+8=0
x = -1 x = -8

(2x ) (x )=0
(2x + 1 ) (x - 3) = 0
Example 5: Find the solutions 2x2 - 5x - 3 = 0 by

Key Points to Remember
You can find the solutions, or roots, of quadratic
equations by setting one side equal to zero, factoring
the polynomial, and then applying the Zero Product
Property. The Principle of Zero Products states that if
ab = 0, then either a = 0 or b = 0, or both a and b are 0.
Once the polynomial is factored, set each factor equal
to zero and solve them separately. The answers will be
the set of solutions for the original equation.
