HIERARCHY OF ARITHMETIC OPERATIONS 3
6.01. 16 + of [32 – 16 ÷ 4 × 6 + 23 − 11 + 3 – 2 × 6] = ?
4
To simplify arithmetic expressions, which involve various
(A) 89/4 (B) 77/4
operations like brackets, multiplication, addition, etc. a
(C) 97/4 (D) 81/4
particular sequence of the operations has to be followed.
For example, 2 + 3 x 4 has to be calculated by multiplying 3 3 3
Sol. 16 + of [32 – 24 + 12 + 3 – 12] = 16 + of [1]
with 4 and the result 12 added to 2 to give the final result of 4 4
14 (you should not add 2 to 3 first to take the result 5 and 3 33 97
multiply this 5 by 4 to give the final result as 20). This is = 16 + × 11 = 16 + = Choice (C)
4 4 4
because in arithmetic operations, multiplication should be
done first before addition is taken up. 1.7 × 0.0028
6.02. =?
0.068 × 0.014
The hierarchy of arithmetic operations are given by a
rule called BODMAS rule. The operations have to be (A) 5 (B) 10 (C) 20 (D) 15
carried out in the order in which they appear in the word 1.7 × 0.0028 17 × 28
Sol. = × 10 = 5 Choice (A)
BODMAS, where different letters of the word BODMAS 0.06 × 0.012 68 × 14
stand for the following operations:
(V Vinculum) 2 1 2 4 3
B Brackets 6.03. 3 + 5 16 ÷ 13 ÷ 6 =?

M Multiplication (C) 1456/369 (D) 1539/369
A Addition 2 1 2 4 3
S Subtraction Sol. 3 + 5 16 ÷ 13 ÷ 6
9 4 3 6 4
There are four types of brackets: 29 21 50 6 27
= + × ÷
9 4 3 82 4
(i) Vinculum : This is represented by a bar on the top of
29 21 50 6 4
the numbers. For example, = + × × ×
9 4 3 82 27
2 + 3 − 4 + 3 ; Here, the figures under the vinculum 29 350 1539
have to be calculated as 4 + 3 first and the "minus" = + = Choice (D)
9 9 × 41 369
sign before 4 is applicable to 7. Thus the given
expression is equal to 2 + 3 − 7 which is equal to –2.
6.04. [{( ) }

(ii) Simple Brackets: These are represented by ( ) (A) 262/5 (B) 271/5
(ii) Curly Brackets: These are represented by { } (C) 267/5 (D) 313/5
(iv) Square Brackets: These are represented by [ ] Sol. 40% of [{(8 + 6) × 5 – 6} × 2 + 3]
2 2 262
The brackets in an expression have to be opened in the order = of [64 × 2 + 3] = × 131 =
5 5 5
of vinculum, simple brackets, curly brackets and square Choice (A)
brackets, i.e., [ { ( ¯ ) } ] to be opened from inside outwards.
7 2 4 5
6.05. 5 + 16 + 18 − 13 = ?
After brackets is O in the BODMAS rule standing for "of" 6 3 9 6
which means multiplication. For example, 1/2 of 4 will be (A) 187/9 (B) 247/9
equal to 1/2 x 4 which is equal to 2. (C) 319/9 (D) 419/9
7 2 4 5 37 50 166 83
After O, the next operation is D standing for division. Sol. 5 + 16 + 18 − 13 = + + −
This is followed by M standing for multiplication. After 6 3 9 6 6 3 9 6
Multiplication, A standing for addition will be performed. 54 166 247
= + = Choice (B)
Then, S standing for subtraction is performed. 6 9 9
