Rassmannin oli täytynyt olla ulkona yli puolen yön, sillä Schorn oli
seissyt sorvauspenkkinsä ääressä yhteen saakka valmistaen
muuatta kiireellistä työtä; ja Rassmann, joka oli "Kultaisesta
Leijonasta" tullessaan joka ilta poikennut hänen työhuoneeseensa,
jos sieltä näkyi tulta, ei ollut tällä kertaa tullut. Ei ollut tullut kello
yhteen mennessä.
Tästä hetkestä lähtien kantoi hän tätä niin usein kuin vain
taloustoimensa sen sallivat.
Oi, olisipa rouva Schorn vain tiennyt, kuka hänen lemmikilleen oli
yöllä antanut potkun!
Mutta koira, koira — "Se käyttäytyy aivan kuin sinä olisit meidän

että teen puolueen hyväksi mitä voin. Kaikki aatteen puolesta!"
Rassmann oli taasen voittopuolella; hänen arvonsa ystävänsä
silmissä oli suurempi kuin koskaan.
