The diamond framework is a tool that helps to assess the characteristics and challenges of a
project based on four dimensions: novelty, complexity, pace, and technology.
• Novelty:
o This dimension measures how new and unfamiliar the project is for the
stakeholders involved.
o It ranges from platform projects, which are based on existing knowledge and
experience, to breakthrough projects, which are highly innovative and
uncertain.
o The BAE Automated Systems case can be considered as a Platform project,
since it involved designing and implementing a fully automated, airport-wide
baggage system that was based on previous experience.
o The project required a high level of creativity and risk-taking from BAE and
the other contractors, as well as the airport authority and the airlines.
• Complexity:
o This dimension measures how many components and interdependencies the
project has.
o It ranges from array projects, which are simple and linear, to system projects,
which are complex and dynamic.
o The BAE Automated Systems case can be considered as a System project,
since it involved integrating multiple subsystems, such as conveyors, scanners,
carts, vehicles, software, etc., across different terminals and concourses.
o The project required a high level of coordination and communication among
BAE and the other contractors, as well as the airport authority and the
airlines.
• Pace:
o This dimension measures how fast and urgent the project is for the
stakeholders involved.
o It ranges from regular projects, which have relaxed deadlines and budgets, to
blitz projects, which have tight deadlines and budgets.
o The BAE Automated Systems case can be considered as a time-critical project,
since it had a fixed deadline of October 1993 for the opening of the airport.
o The project required a high level of efficiency and speed from BAE and the
other contractors, as well as the airport authority and the airlines.
• Technology:
o This dimension measures how advanced and uncertain the technology used
in the project is.
o It ranges from low-tech projects, which use proven and stable technology, to
super high-tech projects, which use cutting-edge and unstable technology.
o The BAE Automated Systems case can be considered as a super high-tech
project, since it used state-of-the-art technology for the automated baggage
system that was not fully tested or validated.
o The project required a high level of expertise and adaptation from BAE and
the other contractors, as well as the airport authority and the airlines.
