RAYBAN BUSINESS PROJECT

Ray ban is an american-italian brand of luxiry eyeglasses and sunglasses. it was founded in 1936 in Rochester,
New York by Buasch & Lomb . The brand is best known for their Wayfarer and Aviator lines of sunglasses.
The first product introduced on the market was the aviator. In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold the brand to the
Italian eyewear conglomerate Luxottica Group, for a reported US$640 million. Their headquarters is situated in
Milan, Italy.

HISTORY
In 1929, US Army Air Corps Colonel John A. Macready worked with Bausch & Lomb, a Rochester, New York-
based medical equipment manufacturer, to create aviation sunglasses that would reduce the distraction for pilots
caused by the intense blue and white hues of the sky. Specifically, MacCready was concerned about how pilots’
goggles would fog up, greatly reducing visibility at high altitude. The prototype, created in 1936 and known as
‘Anti-Glare’, had plastic frames and green lenses that could cut out the glare without obscuring vision. They
also added impact-resistant lenses in 1938. The sunglasses were redesigned with a metal frame the following
year and patented as the Ray-Ban Aviator.
In 1999, the Global Eyewear Division of Bausch & Lomb, including Ray-Ban was acquired by Luxottica Group
for US$640 million
It was at its lowest point when Luxottica bought buasch & lomb’s eyewear brands, with rayban as the deal’s
lead, for $640 million 1990. In 2000, Ray-Ban generated 252 million euros for Luxottica, or 10% of
company sales. By 2014, that had risen more than eightfold to 2.065 billion euros, or 27% of
Luxottica sales. Ray-Bay now commands 5% of the global eye wear market, and is the largest
sunglasses brand, according to Euromonitor International data

In 2021, Ray-Ban commercialized a model of smart glasses that they developed with Facebook Reality Labs
called Ray-Ban Stories.[8][9]

SUCCESS

 how did this brand managed to make such a turnaround and make almost eightfold in revenue within
15 years?

The first step was the acquisition of the company by eyewear company, Luxottica. This company made drastic
changes to how people perceive the product. When Luxottica bought Ray-Ban, they put a heavy focus on the
quality of the glasses. They also moved the glass production from old outdated facilities to new art facilities in
Northeast Italy, which is known as a hub of premium eyewear.
They moved to sell from convenience stores to high-end stores. The next step was moving from only non-
prescription sunglasses to prescription sunglasses, which cost more than regular ones (they net 30% of revenue
from those).
But what made a huge impact on sales were personalized products. In 2013 Ray-Ban launched Re-Mix, which
allowed customers to customize their shades by themselves. You could choose from different styles, materials,
frames, and colors, and there were over 220,000 different possible variants. They also launched their good ol’
Wayfarers made of denim, velvet, wood, leather, and other materials.
