Eğitimde eleştirel düşünceye çok gereksinim duyduğumuz bir dönemdeyiz. Eğitim sistemi,
eleştirel düşünceye karşıt bir noktada. Eleştirel düşünce, özgür, çoğulcu bir toplumun inşası
için olmazsa olmaz (Paul, 1984; Vieira, Tenreiro-Vieira ve Martins, 2011). Öte yandan,
eleştirel düşünce, kültürel kısıtlamalardan da bağımsız değil (Dong, 2015) ve öğrenci
özerkliğiyle ve öğrencinin etkin katılımıyla yakından ilişkili (Bullen, 1998; Winch, 2006) ki
bunlar da eğitim sisteminin desteklediği öğeler değil. Kimi araştırmalar, eleştirel düşünceye
sahip öğrencilerin hangi özelliklerinin olması gerektiğine odaklanırken, diğerleri eleştirel
düşünceyi geliştirme stratejilerine ayrılıyor (Chan, 2013). Sanat eğitiminin eleştirel düşünceyi
beslediği, genel kabul gören bulgular arasında (bkz. Lampert, 2015).
Eleştirel düşünce eğitimi, “tartışma, medya çözümlemesi, sorun çözümü ödevleri, öz-
değerlendirme, akran değerlendirmesi” (Rezaei, Derakhshan, ve Bagherkazemi, 2011, s.769),
örnekolay (vaka) incelemesi, simülasyonlar, sözlü ve yazılı düşünüm/muhasebe (reflection),
senaryo çalışmaları vb. gibi yöntemleri gerektiriyor (Bezanilla ve ark., 2019; McEwen, 1994;
Popil, 2011; Quitadamo ve Kurtz, 2007; Straková ve Cimermanová, 2018; Yıldırım ve Özsoy,
2011). Oysa özellikle tartışma, eğitim sisteminde bir hayli eksik. Eleştirel düşünce, ezberin
karşısında konumlanıyor (Brown, 1998). Etkin yurttaşlık, sürdürülebilir gelişim, bilim
okuryazarlığı, bilişim okuryazarlığı, yaratıcı düşünce gibi kavramlar eleştirel düşüncenin
bağlaşığı (Albitz, 2007; Enciso, Enciso ve Daza, 2017; Ülger, 2016; Hasslöf ve Malmberg,
2015; Straková ve Cimermanová, 2018; Vieira ve Tenreiro-Vieira, 2016; Vieira, Tenreiro-
Vieira ve Martins, 2011; Wals ve Jickling, 2002). Öğrencinin özbilinci, neyi bilip
bilmediğinin ve neyi nasıl öğreneceğinin bilinci ve açık fikirlilik, eleştirel düşüncenin temel
öğeleri (Walker & Finney, 2006).
Bir soru da şu: Eleştirel düşünce, ayrı bir ders mi olmalı yoksa her bir derste eleştirel
düşünceye yer verilmeli mi? Dyer ve Hall (2019), sahte bilim konulu derslerin, diğer bir
deyişle birincinin epistemik olarak kabul edilemez inançlardan kurtulunması anlamında
eleştirel düşünceye daha iyi hizmet ettiği kanısında. Rowe ve ark. (2015), eleştirel düşünceyi
destekleyen bir bilim dersini betimliyor. Benzeri bir bulgu, hemşirelerde eleştirel düşünceyi
çalışan Kanbay ve Okanlı (2017)’den geliyor. Eleştirel düşüncenin müfredata göre değil,
müfredatın eleştirel düşünceye göre biçimlenmesi gerekiyor (Radulović ve Stančić, 2017).
Değerlendirme de ders yöntemini yansıtmalı (Snyder ve Snyder, 2008). Problem-temelli
eğitim gibi seçenekler dikkate alınmalı. Diğer bir konu, eleştirel düşüncenin genel mi konu
özelinde mi olduğu (Moore, 2004)… Genelse, eleştirel düşünce, bölümlere ortak ders olacak;
özelse, her fakülte ya da bölüm ayrı dersler geliştirmek durumunda kalacak.
Doğaldır ki, böyle bir tanımdan toplumsal eleştiri çıkmıyor. Daha toplumsal eleştiriye açık bir
tanımda, varolan uygulamaların varsayımlarını sorgulama gibi bir öğe öne çıkıyor
(Richmond, 2007). Eleştirel düşünce, eleştirel düşünce modellerinin kendilerini de
sorgulamayı gerektiriyor (bkz. Shaw, 2014). Gerçekte mühendislik eğitiminde bile
sorgulanabilecek toplumsal varsayımlar var (Claris ve Riley, 2012). Kimi çalışmaların
(Fairbrother, 2003) eleştirel düşünceyi politik direnişin bir öncülü olarak görmesi, bu
bağlamda şaşırtmıyor. Kahlke ve White (2013) eleştirel düşüncede üçlü bir geleneğe dikkat
çekiyor: “bir teknik beceri kümesi olarak eleştirel düşünce, yaratıcılığa erişme ve kendini
keşfe çıkma biçimi olarak eleştirel düşünce, ve özgürleşme amacıyla bir ideoloji biçimi olarak
eleştirel düşünce” (s.21).
