RIZAL IN SPAIN

In 1882 to 1885 after finishing the fourth year of medical course


in the University of Santo Tomas, Rizal decided to complete his
studies in Spain.
Government : Spain was under constitutional monarchy.
Human Rights: Protected and considered specifically freedom
of speech, press and assembly that were all denied in the
Philippines.
In such atmosphere of freedom lured Jose Rizal to travel to Spain
not only to study but also to carry out his secret mission that he
long been conceived with the approval of his brother Paciano.
SECRET MISSION
To observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs,
industries and commerce and governments and laws of the
European nations in order to prepare himself in the mighty task
of liberating his oppressed people from Spanish tyranny.
JOURNEY TO SPAIN
The departure of Jose Rizal for Spain was kept secret from
Spanish authorities, friars and even to his parents especially to
his mother because she would not allow him to go. Only handful
of his family members and trusted friends were informed. In
order to avoid detection, he used the name Jose Mercado, name
of his cousin in Calamba. Before his departure, he scribbled
farewell letters to his parents and his sweetheart Leonor Rivera.
September 15, 1882 many people had died and more were dying
daily. Another sad news from the Philippines was the chatty
letter of Chengoy recounting the unhappiness of Leonor Rivera.
May 26, 1882
He went to Madrid, the capital of Spain. Since stated in Paciano's
letter that Rizal should finish his study of medicine in there.
November 3, 1882
Rizal enrolled in the Universidad central de Madrid central
University of Madrid in two courses. Medicine and Philosophy
and Letters
 He studied painting and sculpture in the academy of fine
arts of San Fernando took lessons in French, German and
English under private instructors.
 He also practiced fencing and shooting. He visited art

August 20, 1882- Amor Patrio was published in two texts,  Romance with Consuelo Ortiga y Rey, being a lonely
Spanish, which was originally written by Rizal and Tagalog young man in a foreign country he was attracted by
which translated by Marcel H. del Pilar. This poem urged his Consuelo's beauty and composed a poem for her entitled A
compatriots to love their motherland which is the Philippines. la Senorita C.O..y R.

Rizal moves to Madrid  In 1882 shortly after his arrival in Madrid, Rizal joined the
Circulo Hispano-Filipino. (Hispano Philippine Circle). A
Rizal received a sad news about the cholera that was ravaging society of Spaniards and Filipinos. He wrote a poem
manila and the provinces. According to Paciano's letter dated entitled Me Piden Versos ("They asked me for verses").
They said in this sad poem he poured out the cry of his
agonizing heart.
