Design Plate No. VI
FOUNDATION PLAN
1. Objective(s):
The activity aims to introduce the basic concepts, significance and procedures for drafting the
foundation plan which will serve as the basis for the development of the technical plans for structural.
2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
The students shall be able to:
2.1 Familiarize the basic operations and functions used in drafting a foundation plan.
2.2 Determine the technical descriptions involved in the development of the foundation plan.
2.3 Conduct the actual drafting of the foundation plan.
3. Discussion:
Foundation Plan is a plan view of a structure projected onto an imaginary horizontal plane passing
through at the level of the top of the foundation. Foundation plan indicates the size, thickness, and
elevation of footings (foundation), with notes regarding the placement of reinforcing bars (rebars). It
will typically note locations for anchor bolts or weld-plate imbeds for structural steel and other
elements. The footing schedule is normally found on the first sheet of the structural notes, which also
includes notes (structural notes) regarding the reinforcing requirements and other written statements
for structural strengths and testing requirements. To be able to properly interpret a foundation plan,
you must first view the other plans, such as the sections and roofing plan.
4. Resources:
AutoCAD 2017 version or lower
5. Procedure:
Initial Preparations
1. From the previous floor plan and elevation plan activities, carefully plan on where footings would
be erected on site. Foundations are constructed underneath columns. Columns support various
beams, girders, and floor slabs. Based on your floor plan, thoroughly assess where columns could
be erected to fully support your floor plan designs. This assessment needs columns that would
stretch out from the top of foundation to the floor supported.
2. As much as possible, have your columns running from the top of your foundation towards the floor
to be supported. Avoid having planted columns; columns that are not directly supported by a
foundation underneath.
3. Obtain structural details from various existing technical plans that are appropriate for your project
i.e. foundation details, footing tie beam details, wall footing details.

After initial assessment

1. Based on your initial assessment, place footings on your ground floor plan using RECT function
and typing in its corresponding dimensions based on appropriate structural details from your
footing details.
2. Remove CAD Blocks and other drawing symbols associated with building floor plans.
3. The foundation plan should emphasize the building’s foundations and its corresponding column,
footing tie beams or wall footings, and slab for the ground floor. Gridlines and dimensions should
be evident in this plan.
4. Indicate placement for your wall footings and footing tie beams using either multi-line ML or
offsetting lines from WFs and FTBs.
5. After placing appropriate structural features in your foundation plan, provide appropriate drawing
symbols for your structural members i.e. CF, FTB, WF.
